Lions promote former Michigan QB Jake Rudock from practice squad to active roster

I still felt Ruddock had some talent and was a good QB, but watching the games that we had the one thing with Ruddock that I stand by was I don't think he was going to go out and win a game for you if he had to. CJ I thought had that ability with some of his more aggressive check downs and his legs. The thing that helped Ruddock at Michigan is was the talent that surrounded him didn't require him to go out and win the game if he played well.

Even though we have had an up and down year I still would feel that when the game comes down to making a play to win I would rather have CJ than Ruddock. The thing that bugged me about Ruddock and bugs me about other players is when they get their spot taken away from them they just take their ball and go home. Go out and earn the spot back. Obviously it worked out well for both guys and I wish Ruddock the best. He was a good hawk and got his degree.

I would normally agree about the taking his ball, but I think the way it was handled during bowl practices and the announcement pretty much left him no choice. And it also implies, to me, that he might have thrived under a different OC and better schemes/play calls. Then again, what QB WOULDN'T fare better under that scenario?

Rudock with Harbaugh = drafted

CJB with KF = not drafted

One guy cares about scoring.

The other guy cares about field position.

One guy was throwing to CJ Fedorowitz, Tevan Smith, Powell, and a few other experienced guys at Iowa. When he went to Michigan...his receivers were even better. CJ Beathard is throwing to, well, the least experienced receiver core in maybe 15 years at Iowa and an offensive line that hasn't been able to protect. It's like 2012, and JVB...people thought he regressed at QB. New offense, receivers that didn't know what they were reading, and two offensive linemen went down in the 6th game...one a future All American. JVB ran for his life most games. It's getting better as the line is improving late for CJ, but not much. The problem is that we are stuck with the drops and general poor play at receiver.

It's no mystery why 2015 looked one way and 2016 looked another way.

Go back and watch the games. Offense and defense was more aggressive and open-minded last year. Please don't make me repeat the reason for that being true.

That and we had a burner who could catch.

That brings us back to the question. He wasn't gonna be drafted if he stayed at Iowa. So the only reason he was drafted was because he played at Michigan??

I don't know. The NFL spends a lot of time and effort to evaluate these guys. If the only reason CJB is struggling is cuz Iowa doesn't have Michigan talent, then why did he accomplish more than a draft pick surrounded by better talent in 2015 ? And does that mean he will get drafted next spring?
It's not the only reason but talent would help. I always thought Jake was better than CJ so it makes sense to me that he is doing well at the next level. CJ may get drafted due to the league being light on good backups but I don't see him making it. Jake has way better pocket presence and that is a big deal at the next level.

Do you feel Jake would've gone 12-2 at Iowa in 2015?

BTW, I think they are both legit QBs. But as I said in another thread, I think Kirk holds his QBs back . . . and not just his QBs.

I think the 12-2 had little to do with the qb. If you ran that season 100 times with that schedule I would say Iowa still only goes 12-0 2 or 3 times. We would end up with this year's record far more than we would even be 11-1.

Clearly Jake had NFL talent. But i still believe CJ's legs (last year's CJ) won 2 (maybe 3) games last year. I never had the issue with Jake many did, but I also don't believe we go 12-0 with him as qb in 2015 (nor do I believe we would be much better, if any, if Jake was the QB for Iowa this year.)

Now maybe that's more on KF and GD(and possibly lack of WR threat) than the qb's, as I believe both qb's on their "A" game are both quite good.

The starting QB is always going to be a big part of the reason a team has a great year.

I believe Jake was promoted to keep the Bears from grabbing him off the practice squad. He was inactive today for the game against the Vikings. The Bears then grabbed Fales (who they had for several years) off the Ravens practice squad.

Yeah I don't understand Vork's logic. JR is better than CJB. But JR wins 10 games with superior talent around him. And CJB wins 12 games with inferior talent around him. But Jake is the better QB? The math doesn't work.

...It would be interesting what the reaction would have been if CJ had a year like this year in 2015 instead. Ferentz would have been fired.
Life's funny that way. Last season KF let the OC run the offense because KF rightly or wrongly thought his job was on the line and consequently the offense flourished. Oh yeah, there were a whole lot better receivers last season to this.

This season KF has that fat contract in his pocket and he, again, meddles in the offense...Of which he has little understanding - offense. And consequently the offense is, at least, poorer than last season.
