Lick's best coaching/selling job is needed

in order to keep the current players from transfering and the new ones coming in. Lick really needs to sell (to the players) that the way he is doing things will lead to better seasons in the future. He, WE can't start over again next year

Agreed... however... 2 weeks ago I was about ready to send him packing... but I have seen improvement in the team.. they are coming along just like they have at the end of each season.. but you are right, they can not start over. I think he has a group of guys that if anybody leaves it will be a brommer type guy who is not playing. The core will stay, I even think Tucker is going to be in it for the long hall (assuming he stops drinking)

I think next year might be the first time he has returned a starting five... the point of my psycho babbling is that if you look at it from points of view that are not based on win/loss record we have seen improvement since the beginning of the year.. even seeing players get valuable experience ala Lil Lick.

I don't see this as a problem this year. Aside from a guy like Brommer who isn't logging many minutes (I am not inferring he would, just that others more important won't, as I have no reason to think Brommer would transfer) I don't see others moving.

Cole moves into his senior year and couldn't move to a D1 school if he wanted to, as he already lost a year to red shirt and you only get five years to compete in four, period. Gatens, Tucker (provided he doesn't get himself kicked off the team), Payne, May and Cougill are all staying. Three are Iowa guys that bleed B&G, Payne changed his mind so many times before he decided on Iowa and he will log all kinds of minutes next year and be in charge, a guy like him doesn't move when he is the man from his freshman year on as PG and by all accounts there is no reason to think he would move. Would Fuller leave for some reason? There is no reason to think he would.

That means everyone logging substantial minutes will be back. End of story. With the new class coming in I will really be looking forward to next year. And let's face it, that's all we have right now, looking forward to stability of the current nucleus and next year's class of freshman.

G10Hawk........and whose fault is it that he has never had a full roster? And for the guy that has seen improvement........I sure hope you don't consider the Minnesota game improvent.

In each of Lick's two previous seasons the team played at least a handful of good, solid games, though they were never consistently good. For example, last season they played well at times toward the end of the season, then got rocked in the BTT.

This year I can't point to a game in which they played really well and came away with a win, and I'm not optimistic that we'll see that happen yet this season.

I don't think it can fairly be said that this program has improved its on-court performance in the three years Lickliter has been here. This team looks more inept to me overall than either of the previous two. It is a young team, but if we'd had more success in recruiting and player retention (even discounting Jake), that would not be the case. It's on Lick.

Freddy- Let's say Jake transfers, but we still have everyone else back. Do you think our recrod would be that much better than it is now? We may have a few more wins, as Peterson would most likely be pretty solid this year and made a difference; but I don't think anyone else would have made a difference. We knew this team, with or without Peterson, wasn't going to make the tourney, so why not let the young guys get some experience and learn from the mistakes they make. I just don't see the big deal people are making about the transfers, save Peterson.

You can't have four players walk away from the program without it being a blow to the program. Even if some of those players weren't big contributors, they would at least add depth. Having Peterson this year would help a LOT at PG. Having Kelly would also be a positive, obviously. Night and day difference IMO if we didn't have any transfers after last season. I just don't see how you can say it's not a big deal. It is THE reason people are citing for why we are so bad this year. We are pretty much starting over again this year because of those transfers.

my earlier post was referring to each individual season. we have seen improvement from the beginning of the season to the end... I have not seen any improvement if you look from day 1 of lick to now.. but the point being made is that it is a new group... EVERY year.. which needs to stop or lick will be gone... but if he can keep all of the players he has this year... I think we will start to see them develop as a team over the summer... include some very good talent coming in, and I believe next year is where lick starts to right the ship. I really do think we have the right guy.. he is just wearing thin on a lot of peoples patience. (including mine)

WOW!!! Hey Shada, I found another guy that get's it!!!!!

The longer this season goes on like this the harder it is going to be for Lickliter to sell his "system" to these players that it will work IMO.

These guys are getting their heads handed to them game after game. They came into the season thinking they were going to be pretty good. Oh they knew they would lose games but they thought they would be pretty competetive. But they start off the season losing to almost everybody but the truly bad teams and those are the ONLY teams that they are competetive with. They get blown out by everybody else during the preseason...everybody. The ONLY close game was Duquense, which was their second game (if I remember correctly).

Now they start the Big 10 season and they are really getting blown out now and they might not win ANY games. They have won ONLY 5 games thus far in the entire season and might have the worst season in Iowa HISTORY.

It will be very difficult for Lickliter to continue to sell his "system" to these kids as being legitimate, as being a winner, when they continue to get mauled game after game and don't even come close to beating a legitimate team. It will be difficult for Lickliter NOT to lose some of these kids and for some of these kids not to become disillusioned with Lickliter's "system".

I bleed black and gold, I assure you. But I honestly have to say that if I was a top-notch recruit with my choice of various other Big Ten or Big 12 schools, I just don't think I would go to Iowa right now. It is just so bad right now, that what is the allure of playing for Iowa? Lickliter has his work cut out for him, to put it lightly.
