Let's set our goal of winning the Big Ten

This "BCS title or you're no good" hysteria has weakened the game of CFB. Yea, it would be great to be the Nat'l Champion but only 1 team will have that title bestowed on them year. Does that mean that Texas is trash? Absolutely not! They got to the game and even though Bama handled them pretty good, Texas was still a damn good team.

Bo Schembechler once stated that the ultimate goal of Mich. was to win the Big Ten. Winning the Big Ten (or any other conference) is a great honor, but in this day of BCS title or nothing at all, conference championships have been weakened.

The AZ has probably knocked the Hawks out of the BCS title contention but what an honor it would be to win the BIG TEN! When was the last time Iowa was the sole conference champ? It's been a long time. The season ain't over, it's just begun.

GO HAWKS!!!!

Winning the BigTen is ALWAYS the goal. Do that - and everything else will work its way out.

In most years, an outright BigTen champion would be in the discussion for the NC game, but this year the BigTen champ would probably need to go undefeated to be in the mix.

Now that the stars are out of everyone's eys, we can get more in tune with the focus on the real prize.

I'd rather get to ANY BCS bowl than win the big ten title. NExt year or whenever there is a true title game then I will start to care about B10 titles. It's kind of a sham when you can win the title without playing everyone or winning a set title game.

Any other year but this year, I'd agree. But not this year. Not with this team and talent level.

Aim for the moon...you'll hit the sky.
Aim for the sky...you'll hit the ground.
Aim for the ground...you'll hit your foot.

1 game at a time, we have to beat our next opponent. You can't get on a winning streak, without winning the next game.
Welcome to my cliche' fest.

You would rather win the Orange Bowl or Fiesta Bowl than the Big Ten title?

Give me a Big Ten title and it isnt even close -- especially in a year like this year where we eeplay all the big boys and it will be settled on the field

Yep give me the tv exposure, the revenue for the league, the chance to go to new places for the fans over the B10 title. Like I said when there is a title game it will be different because it will also provide all of those things I mentioned above. Right now I guess we get a trophy and bragging rights if you win the b10? Then there's also always the chance of the "shared" title...which is not a title at all.

You do realize that if you win the BigTen title, you will be an automatic qualifier for a BCS game right?

And if you share the BigTen title but aren't the team that gets the automatic bid, you probably stand a good chance to be selected to a BCS game.

The Rose Bowl, (which goes to the Big Ten winner and is a BCS bowl) is one of the most watched bowl games.

Interesting debate between B10 title or BCS game. More interesting the last time Iowa won a share of the B10 title it didn't get to a BCS game but there was one less BCS game then.

Being that its been 25 years since Iowa won an outright B10 title (Jesus that doesn't sound good) that is the biggest goal for me. Although its easy to say that because and outright title= BCS game.

However, sharing the B10 title vs BCS game (with no B10 title share), not even close for me, BCS game.

My own personal wish was to see the Hawks win the Big Ten. The National title game would have been nice, but I've always felt that unless the season goes just right, Iowa would get passed over by other undefeated teams.

We're still undefeated in Big Ten play, and could still pull this off. Winning the Big Ten, or at least repeating out to a BCS game should be our goal. This loss hurts as it leaves less room for error down the road (with regard to the at-large bid), but doesn't necessarily hurt our shot at the Rose Bowl!

The whole argument is ridiculous. The two things are not, and cannot be, exclusive.

As was mentioned (and summarily ignored), the winner of the Big 10 conference automatically qualifies for A BCS bowl.

And if your team is playing in the BCS NC game, they obviously won their conference or they wouldn't be there in the first place.

Furthermore, neither goal is unattainable. Once upon a time, a team lost to Iowa State and ended up playing USC in the Orange Bowl...

They play Ohio State, so having to share the title is pretty unlikely unless something strange happens.

a chance of going to the rose bowl aint bad lol...got a lot of work to do before thinking that..

lot of hawk fans got ahead of themselves by just complaining about our ranking at #9

Actually teams share the title quite a bit even when the play each other. PSU/OSU in 2008 is the most recent example. Obviously Iowa/Michigan in 2004.

Not crazy to think that OSU could lose to Wisconsin this season, go 7-1 in the B10, while Iowa loses to OSU and goes 7-1 too.

Let's start out small and work our way up to the conference championship. How about setting the goal of going to a home game without getting thrown in the drunk tank?

Even sharing a Big Ten title, you will likely still get a BCS game, but it just depends on the year. Last year, we finished 2nd in the league and went to the Orangle Bowl. In '04, we shared the title but only went to the Cap1.

But I agree that the Big Ten title should be your goal each year because that's something you can control - winning the games you play. But the couple of bowl examples above I think show that you can't really control your bowl destiny (outside of winning as many games as possible and getting a good bowl game). It's really all up to the Bowl committees who they want to invite, how things shake out in the other BCS leagues, and any non-BCS teams like Boise sneaking in and taking a BCS spot.

So I don't really understand the concept of setting a goal of getting to a particular bowl game. Just set a goal to win X number of games, or winning your league. The bowl situation will take care of itself one way or the other.

I realize that but do you realize you don't HAVE to win the B10 to get to a BCS game? I was merely discussing the merits of each if you want to get all technical and not enjoy the flow of the discussion then I don't care but just don't try to shoot people down on minor technicalities counselor.

If we win the Big Ten, we're going to a BCS game. Plain and simple.

If we DON'T win the Big Ten, or a share of it, it'll have to be assumed that we lost a game or more in Big Ten play. A 10-2 Iowa would probably have a good shot at a BCS at-large berth. A 9-3 Iowa would probably not.

I'm going out on a short limb here. I believe this week team goals are as follows:
1. Improve kickoff coverage
2. Improve blitz recognition and blocking
3. Beat Ball State

Next week's goals have yet to be written. However, I'd bet dollars to donuts (and considering how few dollars I have right now that's a big statement to make) that as it is right now the team goals for the remaining season are as follows:
1. Beat Ball State and finish non con 3-1.
2. Win Big 10 title.
3. Win Rose Bowl
