Let Tim Lester Locate Portal QB

We discussed this in a different thread a few weeks ago that Mizzou has its financial house in order now. Their AD that laid the foundation is now at Arizona but they are reaping the rewards of it. I would guess that means NIL is in good shape.

I also read where the DL recruit from NW Missouri we were going after signed with Mizzou. So the NIL must have been adequate. But he was from Huntsville, MO, a small town just 30-40 north of Colmubia so he probably grew up a MIzzou fan.

I"lll bet Mizzou stays competitive going forward in the SEC. We'll see how it all translates on Dec 30, eh?

There was lots of talk about how Iowa's offense improved this past season, and our rushing and scoring stats certainly did compared to the previous season. But our passing yardage ranked 123rd in the nation this season. We ain't recruiting an elite QB into that system. Ain't. Gonna. Happen.

Me thinks all things being equal for a QB, the player will question whether underneath all of this good stuff that Tim Lester has to say, there is still Kirk Ferentz, his expected tenure and his "Iowa offense" reputation.

Dochertman nailed this in one, of the 18,000 pods he is on, I can’t figure out where I heard him say it. If Lester feels he is the guy, then go get him. Spend the money because you have it. It is a hard sell for Lester, convincing Gronowski, that he can get him into the NFL, but you gotta try.

Gotta try. Just like all the others they wanted. The pitch is the pitch and does it sell? This kid is looking to maximize his NIL for 1 yr while playing for a high enough profile D1 school to enhance his draft status the next yr.

Can Iowa realistically help him do both? $ wise I'm not sure and on the field wise I'm extremely skeptical. Just depends what his other options end up being. Nothing would boost his profile more then turning around Iowa's passing game though. The next Qb that does that will have a statue built for him

As I scrolled through the On3 website of who's in the portal I saw that a WR from SD named Wilde is also in there. It'd be a nice 2 for 1 sale to land him with Grownoski. However he has a do not contact distinction and guys that do that often already know where they are going. My guess is he's following his coach to Washington State so if that's the case then I would imagine the QB would too. I guess we'll see

With the attrition we are facing with the offensive line, unless we hit on a few upgrades in the portal, I'm not sure it will matter much which QB Lester successfully targets.

As far as I can ascertain from what's been reported, there's only been one lineman we prioritized thus far and he signed with Ohio State.

Kirk will be 70 years old
Contract takes him to 2029 with 42 million buyout
Kirk has no desire to switch to a modern offense.
Every high school QB knows Iowa is a place where QBs go to die.

Until Kirk retires/leaves will not be able to recruit or buy a good QB….

I hope your wrong. You could be right.

We did buy one but he didn't turn out to be good. Michigan retread................... they were probably laughing the whole time. Was that a Brian pick? If so, well that explains everything.

Tim did say in an interview during the season that some of his calls were overturned. I am assuming by Kirk.

Kirk has neglected the offense. Neglected having good staff, lost a vision of excellence and over relied on defense. The result is a bad reputation when it comes to offense QB, WR And I’ll throw in OLine. I fear Lester is climbing a greased pole

Look, if you did not see improvement and modernization in the offense this season, you watched a different team. Does the offense and the QB position still need a lot of work? Hell yes. But, does it look like things are heading in the right direction? Yes.

I hope we land another portal QB, but even if we do not, we have three guys in Spring ball that have started and played in games at a major conference level. There is substance there for Lester to work with, even if it isn't elite talent.

As for Lester being overruled, there is not a OC on this planet that has had one idea in a clutch moment and the HC has decided to go the other way. The HC is ultimately the boss. But, did you hear KF's interview? He doesn't even fully understand Lester's verbiage, so KF aint calling plays. Its more like, should we run or pass type stuff on critical downs. 99% of the plays we saw this year went from Lester's mouth to the QB's headset without KF saying a word.

All true. But, if you actually saw a guy successfully climb a greased pole, you would be like, "that is the greatest pole climber I have ever seen. I should make him my head pole climber!"

Lester knows exactly where he is and what is in front of him.

Yup.
