Last time we were rated this high?

In the BCS era I think we got to 5 in '02. I don't think we got there in '09. Of course '85 saw #1 for 5 weeks. In the coaches and AP I think we were 3 in the last regular season poll of '02. Anyone remember different?

I believe in 09 we finished 7th in the standings.

Ya and in 09 Hawks were riding high until a mediocre Northwestern squad came in and foobared us.
Similar to a setup we face this weekend if not careful.
Throw the rankings out the window lets get MN.

Iowa was ranked third in 2002, behind OSU and Miami (that sounds weird when you say it aloud). 2002 Iowa v. 2002 OSU, one of the best games that was never played. Still think Iowa could have taken them.

Ultimately after the final poll Iowa ended up at #8... We were as high as #3 at season's end....several interesting things stand out from looking at that year's rankings....ISU was actually ranked ahead of Iowa for several weeks and was ranked as high as #9 eight weeks into season (they were not in top 25 by week 12 or final poll)...other noted point from that 2002 season, was 16 schools of the final top 25 teams are no where to be found in today's current poll. Times do change.

As for 2009, we were ranked #7 for two weeks week 7 and 8, with a final ranking at #7....and in the final poll that year, only 10 schools are the same that are listed in today's top 25.

Things turned in NW game when Stanzi when down, we were up 7-0 very quickly. Is the week sports illustrated had us on the cover in the Midwest. Keep SI away

Iowa got to #4 in the BCS rankings in 2009, they were 9-0 then lost to N western at Kinnick, when Stanzi got hurt.

Week 3 of the BCS poll

1.Florida
2.Texas
3.Alabama
4.Iowa

Iowa was also AP #4 that week.

Jon and others have reported that SI was on campus this week.

I remember Purdue had Ohio State on the ropes well into the 4th quarter that year only to have Ohio St come back and win at the end of the game. They lucked out that game.

up 10-0 on NW, naked boot by Stanzi in endz one, Wooten destroys his leg forces fumble recovered for TD. Just like that 10-7 and dream of 10-and-O record down the toilet.

Yep, that's what I was thinking.

In 2002, I was thinking also #4 in the BCS at one point. IIRC, USC jumped us late in the year and bumped us to 5th. Pretty sure Iowa did reach #3 in the AP/Coaches polls that year, though.

it was 10-0 bc Iowa lost 17-10. I think weghers had a 70 yd td called back with us up 10-7 shortly before halftime and if I remember correctly we did not cross midfield from that point on.

The Eubanks pancake block phantom hold.

There was a clear face mask on that play. The call wouldn't have helped Stanzi but the TD wouldn't have counted and Iowa would havecretained the ball around the 20. 2 bad calls killed Iowa that game, but that's the kind of thing a championship team over comes. Vandenberg was a deer in the headlights that day but played his butt off vs OSU in an OT loss with a week to prep. We had a shot in regulation in that week but didn't take it. These dream seasons are few and fragile.
