Kyle Groeneweg Emerging as Hawkeye Receiver, Return Man

Apathy? Iowa receiver fatigue? (Referring to the lack of response to this article). Once again Rob it was nicely written but who in Hawkeye land is going to get excited about Iowa’s passing game? The offense seriously needs viagra.

I don’t think KF would change up his offensive schemes even if he had a first round NFL receiver.

Run left, run right, both plays on audibles, then pass on third and nine............... yawn!

Prove me wrong Kirk and son. PLEASE???????

I've said it before. Kirk would rather have the defense on the field after he gets an early score or two. The defense can't turn the ball over. They can, however, force a turnover. He is scared to death of the turnover deep in his own territory. When his philosophy works, he gets no credit. When it doesn't, he gets a ton of blame. But that's the girl that he's chosen to bring to the dance.

I've brought this up before, too. If he were a basketball coach his favorite offensive play would be the shot clock violation. He would have that much trepidation of the possible consequences of a rebound or live ball turnover. Don't believe me? Looks at how he coaches football. Especially if he gets his two early scores. It worked in the 2010 Orange Bowl. It did not in the late season 2010 collapse. Minnesota? Interim coach. Coker runs wild and you still find a way to lose?

Here's a question that was asked BF a few weeks ago: It shows that Brian mixed it up on 3rd down more than GDGD did the year prior... I don't have any stats but I feel like we mixed it up a little better last year than the previous ones with respect to passing more on 1st and 2nd

Q. How cognizant are you of balance from a play calling perspective? On 3rd down especially, I looked at the two different years, and in 2016 when tight ends or fullbacks were on the field on 3rd down, you ran 45 of 47 times, whereas last year it was 57 of 80, and the same thing with passing. 74 out of 75 third down plays with 11 personnel in ’16 were passes, whereas last year it was I think 73 of 98. So just you’re running more in 11 and you’re passing more out of other ones. Was that a goal of yours, something you strived for, or is that just the way it organically worked out?

Hopefully it helps when the play book can be opened up a little more. Growth seems to be a well used word this spring, so we'll see.

Yep and conservative Kirk helped lose us the game with that philosophy the last time we lost to ISU.

why would iowa fans get excited when, again, our HC targets another walk-on WR as making strides. so, now, we know that we'll have at least 2 walk-ons in our top 3. so, us fans are asking whether it will be Brandon Smith or ISM that is the odd man out. So, we're really giving our NFL caliber qb all the tools he needs, right?

KFz's philosophy is good at keeping his teams close with tough opponents. The flip side is, it's also good at allowing lesser opponents to stay close. That's why losses like ISU, CMU, NDSU, NIU happen on a fairly regular basis.

his philosophy appears to be to have a total of 42 points total; regardless of who scores them. i'd be happy if he prioritized us scoring most of them. just saying.....

We get excited when ANY wide receiver shows promise. He could be another Easley.

Easley, 2015 and pre-injury Vandeberg, McCarron who almost made the Texans squad and might find the right NFL fit.

Some of these guys are just playmakers who get it done, possession catches, catching in traffic or getting into seams for big plays. I just hope KF plays the best 5 or so WRs and not just becasue they can block.

you're right. but what iowa's offense is MISSING...and has been for almost all of kirk's 19 seasons is the mid-range and deep threats. if you don't make the defense vacate the "box" then they don't have to think; only react. let's try and make defenses have to do both. how's that for an idea?

McCarron and others are and were plenty fast enought but the deep ball to KF is a low percentage play which they dont use much. You probably havent read many of my posts about how we dont throw the ball down the field enough. They didnt throw the ball deep much or not enough with Brodell, CJ Jones, McNutt, and T SMith.

Defenses have been daring us to throw deep and I even posted a few years ago that a QB should be able to make that read on a deep route in 2 seconds or less and get the throw off in 3 seconds so I think it is a fallacy to say we cant protect our QBs long enough for a deep passing attack

no, i agree with you. my post was "in addition to..." your post. we're on the same page.

We threw down the field last year more than I can remember... Many of them were thrown two yards too far and I can remember a couple drops but they started to connect later in the year. The opportunities are there, the players just need to *gasp* execute

i was encouraged by last year. but with the hc coming out and essentially doing his typical "hey this kid improved" and that kid is a walk on at WR, well, doesn't instill hope that the hc (at least) has faith in steady down field passing. i hope i'm wrong and i could be. but it sounds so typical of the previous 18 seasons.

Stanley was 5th in the Big 10 in passing yards per attempt and 4th in adjusted passing yards per attempt last year. For context, Beathard was not in the Top 10 in passing yards per attempt and 9th in the conference in adjusted passing yards per attempt in 2016. It seems to be trending in the right direction. I do agree that we need to wait and see how it goes the next couple of years with a veteran QB like Stanley - hopefully he gets better as he goes. And, he needs the young receivers to step up and get some separation in their routes.

If Stanley can be superman then it won't matter who the WR's are because he could throw them open like a Brady or Brees. All they would have to do is catch the dang thing.

I am not predicting for this to happen though. I think we will see another fantastic statistical year from Stanley, but I fully expect that the passing game will be painfully absent against the best B1G competition.
