Kyle Groeneweg Emerging as Hawkeye Receiver, Return Man

Stanley was 5th in the Big 10 in passing yards per attempt and 4th in adjusted passing yards per attempt last year. For context, Beathard was not in the Top 10 in passing yards per attempt and 9th in the conference in adjusted passing yards per attempt in 2016. It seems to be trending in the right direction. I do agree that we need to wait and see how it goes the next couple of years with a veteran QB like Stanley - hopefully he gets better as he goes. And, he needs the young receivers to step up and get some separation in their routes.

i am hopeful. but, as we know, it must be intended; i.e. we must set out to do "it." in this case, "it" is consistently throwing down field and seeking out and using ultra athletic WR's.

If the offensive line can give Stanley an additional half second on average, it would help a lot. It's not inconceivable given how green the offensive tackles were and Wadley's poor blocking. Blocking from the tight ends should be improved as well. Of course the big question is the center of the line with two new guards and Render switched from guard to center.

I would love to see Stanley come up to the line and start calling audibles into pass plays at least half of the time. The fact that 99.99% of the time it’s a running play and he is only calling out blocking assignments is maddening. What kind of moron coach allows the opposing defense this type of advantage. If Kirk would just change this strategy I would at least feel better about things.

I wouldn't call him a moron but I agree with not liking the predictability of how we use audibles.

Really good article in the Press Citizen about him today. He ran a 200m in 21.69 4 years ago (Tim Dwight's PR was 20.98) and is really similar size at 5'10" 186. I'm excited to see what he can do and it kind of shows how he ended up here. Hope too see him contribute this fall!

Agreed, maybe moron was a bit strong of a word. It’s just that this should be obvious to the coaching staff which is very frustrating to watch them to continue to do it.

Last year Nate Stanley threw for 2,400 yards, but not even half of those yards went to wide receivers. If Iowa is ever going to improve their offense they need to actually throw the ball downfield. oh, and catching it helps too.

you're right. but what iowa's offense is MISSING...and has been for almost all of kirk's 19 seasons is the mid-range and deep threats. if you don't make the defense vacate the "box" then they don't have to think; only react. let's try and make defenses have to do both. how's that for an idea?

It is 2018, the way the sport is trending, you have to score points. Even Saban realizes that 2 or 3 times a year he has to put up points.

THis is huge

Wadley bailed us out a lot, and the TE were productive most of the time

Without wadley or a proven WR do defenses game plan for our TE? Someone new is gonna have to make up that 1000 yards

Hopefully it helps when the play book can be opened up a little more. Growth seems to be a well used word this spring, so we'll see.

We here the same thing every spring. Last year it was how much Devontae Young and Brandon Smith improved. I think they had maybe 5 catches combined the entire year, if that. Young barely saw the field, and Smith was out there, but non existent.
