KXNO's 4PM host change...

In retrospect Miller and Brinson was actually pretty good compared to what's out there now.

Seems like every incarnation gets worse.

Harden screwed up big time bringing on Heather which obviously drove Ken Miller to leave.

I like Ken allot, he's the best in DSM by a mile. I can't stand Marty because everything he does is self serving but will still listen mostly to their show over the kxno one except for the Monday hour when they have the rebound/QB thing.

Wouldnt even consider giving the morning show a listen because we all know it will be a joke.

Williams voice is like nails on a chalk board for me. RP does nothing but ***** constantly about the hawks, and when he's not ******** he is rationalizing his ********...just gets old and tired. Monday evening rebound is worth listening to, but that's it. Thought Jake and Jess had some great thoughts on all of the Fran stuff. Nice to hear from two guys that aren't media nancies.

Marty and Miller work well together and I'm on my way to switching for about 90 percent of my drive. KXNO just doesn't have it right now.

Boy I don't agree, but like Marty said today, sports radio is like Pizza....some like deep dish, some like thin crust.

I would try to tune in Miller & Brinson and Jim's lack of depth of knowledge on college football, especially in the regional footprint, drove me to listening to Hardcore History podcasts on the Mongolian Empire....which was actually an entertaining listen. Nice guy, Jim....but I couldn't take it....and when they had Ken Rosenforgothisname on talking Big Ten, I couldnt turn it fast enough, MMMMKAAAAYYYY?

Miller follows whoever will lead him in the Sports Radio field. Case in Point: He would even follow Matt Perrault when he said things like "the 2009 Iowa FB defense will probably have 2 players that will make an NFL team" and when the Mayor was announced as the isu bb coach, Perrault snickered incessantly and pointed to the fact that freddy had never even coached a little league team, let alone a power conf bb team. So if you don't like Marty, how can you listen to Miller?
I think that is a valid criticism of Miller when he played sidekick to Marty and Perault. I think he changed when teamed with Brinson. Now whether he morphs back to being marty's echo box. I dunno.

and when they had Ken Rosenforgothisname on talking Big Ten, I couldnt turn it fast enough, MMMMKAAAAYYYY?
.He was not good even when all he would do is state the obvious.

And the shrill "journalist" from Nebby-land. I'd listen for the first question and after about 60 seconds of hemming-hawing it was Big Red positive spin all the way. And then he'd ask Miller/Brinson, 'what do you guys think?' That guy has the red/white skirt and pom-poms.

My radio dial would move for both of those.

I think Chris and Ross will round out to put together a great show....and Marty and Miller will have a great show, too....two very strong options in afternoon drive when it has really been lacking in PM drive since 'The Incident' nearly six years ago.

Each show is different..I find myself tuning back and forth on the drive home from the office via the smart phone.

Like Dean said... Chris is simply a sunshine pumper. He's good at it. It drives up the views on his site, but it really makes him and the entire Cyclone fan base seem delusional. They eat up everything that he says. It's like giving crack to a crackhead. I'm amazed at how he manages to put a positive spin on literally every situation.

Cyclone fans call you delusional as well Jon. I know it's a two way street, but at least I've seen you criticize different aspects of Iowa athletic programs. It seems like Chris never goes there and because of that I'm not able to listen. He just instantly loses all credibility in my book because he isn't ever able to remove his bias in order to look at a situation objectively.

Radio is certainly like pizza. You get 10 guys in a room and they may all want to listen to sports talk but they'll give you 5 different shows they'd like to listen to. I just never could stand listening to Tirrell. He comes off as a used car salesman snake. He just throws things out there to be brash and controversial. I just don't trust him or believe a word out of his mouth. Not that those should matter so much when I listen to sports for entertainment. (is Brian Williams reading this) I just never found him remotely entertaining or the least bit credible. And after the crap he did that got out in the news awhile ago I can't believe he's even hireable....

I’d like to see Garman back in the dsm radio scene. Him and Cotlar were a pretty good mix, and the time slot after DP and before Murph and Andy was perfect. Dsm radio is pretty fragmented and meh, never recovered after 'the incident' paired with Miller & Deace going off air.

Deace is no Hawkeye fan, but he is objective in the way he calls it. Sure, like every person on the planet, he has his bias, but for the most part he knows it and tries to keep it from clouding his opinion (as much as is possible). Chrissy possesses none of those qualities. It isn't like I was listening to KXNO at 4PM anyway, but I damn sure as well won't start now.

Id still take him over Marty. Jimmy B was ridiculous but to me at least, entertaining. Part of the entertainment was hearing Ken scold him all the time.

Roesenfelds or whatever his name was the worst guest they had by far. That was basically just a weekly Ohio State segment.

I tapped out a long time ago, except for Iowa stuff and the occasional local story I am more of a national guy than a local guy.

In other words, I really don't have any investment on who they roll out there. CW can talk all the cyclone/nascar he wants as far as I am concerned.

Miller and Deace need to return. Best radio show out of Iowa and I'm 100% serious. Some good radio in the Miller and Deace era.

Exactly, Marty is generally not giving you his opinion as much as trying to instigate things by spreading rumors from made up sources or trying to sound important by name dropping.

And yet I still think they are the only real sports show going.

Have by far the best guests.
all kxnos good guest are left over from Miller.

Out of habit, I flip on KXNO ... only because I keep a little cheap radio in the bathroom and I am too lazy to futz with loading my podcasts on my iPhone in the morning ... The bottomline is local sports radio in Des Moines is bad. I used to enjoy the afternoon 4-6 slot on KXNO but both of those guys are gone.

Instead we are left with Murph and Andy ... I used to live close to Andy as he sort of has that "I am a big fish in a small pond" mentality even though he tried to fly away once to a larger market and came back to Des Moines. I want to be able to turn on the radio and hear about real local sports and serious conversation (i.e. I used to enjoy Miller and Deace) ... Now you have people on the radio who sound no better on the radio than if I were to mic up myself and my buddy ... The Des Moines area has lots of local "lifers" on its television and radio shows ... people who are "okay" in Des Moines but really don't have much talent to take them elsewhere so they stay here their entire life ... In a nutshell, they are like some former Iowa assistant football coaches ... nobody wants them.

Murph and Andy is a veriety show that I tuned out long, long ago ... And no reason to tune in KXNO in the afternoon whatsoever ... Marty T is a windbag ... but you know, it's sort of like Jerry SPringer ... you stumble on it and just sort of have to listen for just a few minutes ...

Bottomline is local radio is suffering just like local media channels ... Nobody cares about listening to your local weather person when we can simply get the same information spending about 30 seconds with our phone's weather app. Same goes for radio ... I am Podcast and iHeart radio all the way .. except for that 10 minutes in the morning when I am getting ready and listen to them cycle through bad studio hosts ...

Marty is just so disingenuous and fake that like you said who knows what he really thinks. He just goes to the most extreme position to make waves. And honestly that shock jock type of radio has an audience and that's fine I get that. It's not for me. And after hearing how he's screwed people over in the business and how he talks down to people.... Knowing just some of those things about him which came to light, I bet is just the tip of the iceberg as to what all he's done just keeps me from wanting to help him stay on the air. When someone is as mean spirited, selfish etc as he's been I'd just rather have someone else get a shot.

Your radio listening reasoning is quite complex.

I only ask for one simple thing from my radio talk show hosts... entertain me.

Marty and Miller do the best job of this so I tune in.

I thought those 2 were decent together, mainly because Cotlar has the best rolodex in the state and is decent at giving interviews. Neither one of them has a clue when talking about Iowa athletics, beyond the obvious that is.

Maybe it's just me, but every paycheck Cotlar has ever cashed for being a radio host has been stealing imo. Zero personality, no takes and takes stances on nothing. Cotlar is the Mr. Rogers of sports talk radio. I don't know everyone is his rolodex but I have to think between Ken Miller and Marty that their rolodex would be hard to beat. I usually heard Cotlar interviewing the Drake AD or someone covering Grandview. Garman is ok and would be a better option than Chris Williams and both of the morning hosts.
