Kirk's show last night

it is a pre-requisite to be talented and skillful to play in the NFL. Why is it that the patriots are year in, and year out winners after the draft. they not only operate smartly with their money; but will all too often trade down to pass on known talent for a tough-high football IQ player. this is oft debated in the off season. brady has virtually no "1st round" talent on his team, yet wins pretty regularly because of the "chip" that is permanently placed on the shoulder for well over two thirds of the patriot players. You saw this same approach with seantrel last year; obviously he has talent and will play on sundays barring injury- but ferentz is more happy with players that still need to improve and have the hunger and will to do it. A hungrier animal fights harder, or a man defending his country voluntarily defends at a higher rate of success than those that are hired to do so (mercenary).

Short answer: ferentz wants to have players that have room to grow but show glimmers of talent early on. Now that his "character" is no longer in question and work ethic is established = AKA: NFL ready
