Kirk on Iowa's last drive

Q. When you got the ball, two runs and the sack, is your thinking that we're okay, three-and-out, we can put this on the defense?

KIRK FERENTZ: No, our goal was to get two first downs. If we had done that, they would have had two time-outs left. But if you run the ball twice and get a yard or whatever it was -- I don't even know if we got that, it puts a little pressure on you. But no, our goal was to make first two downs and then bleed the clock.

Playing not to lose basically.

Q. I think people everywhere were saying no matter what North Dakota State’s pedigree, you have no business losing this game. What would you say?

KIRK FERENTZ: I’d say we lost to a really good football team today. It’s as simple as that. I think anybody that was in the stadium today realized that’s a good football team. They play hard. They’re tough. They’re physical. They believe in themselves. They’ve been doing it for quite a while, but we played the 2016 team, and they were the better team than us today.

The challenge for us now is to — we got a feel for what it’s like, and we’re going to have to push forward here because we’re going to play more good teams this year.

This one made me laugh.

Exactly!

If your going to run the ball at least come out in the spread offense with one back in the backfield. If they don't react to the spread and still rush the same amount of defensive players CJ audibilizes at the line and calls for a quick slant play. That goes for at least six yards or more every time, and often can result in a big play.

First down was iffy because you would like to think we could get some yards but they were going to expect the run. 2nd down was downright stupid.

Kirk and staff did not have this team tuned up for this level of intensity. And or the talent does not measure up. It was said prior to last season that Iowa's recruiting had hit a 10-year low. Maybe this is what that looks like.

Lol, classic Kirk.

Maybe their AD will be talking to our AD about writing up a juicy contract. What's their coach getting paid? I would guess around $350,000 to $600,000 a year.

At least their fans get to Know what a championship feels like. A lot of bang for their buck. Iowa fans are just getting banged and you know where.

When I read that statement it makes me think it Kirk Ferentz that obtuse, that conservative, or does he know deep down he has a mediocre roster on his hands. I say yes......something yet again is broke within the walls of Fort Kinnick.

We just went 12-2 last year and our recruiting has been better. Our bad years should have been last year, this year, and maybe next year. We got lucky and put together a good season last year. Mostly because of CJ, Jewell, and King turned out to be really good. Like I've said before, losses like this are very Kirk Ferentz like. We can still have a good season and continue building with the new facilities.

Ol Kirk. Hey he is one of the top 3 coaches in Iowa history. There aren't any much better if at all.

But yeah... nice guy, but even last year when we were having our historic season. I've just never really felt the love for him.
He is a hella nice guy (I've actually had a short conversation with him in person) and one of the best at developing players. But he for whatever reason, if its that he doesnt have the killer instinct or is too nice - dunno, he just can't consistently bring home games that should never be lost.

He has a contract for life. I don't even know why he bothers doing press conferences. Just say, "None of your d*mn business", light a cigar with a $100, and walk out.
Unless it's a fireable offense to refuse a press conference. Hell, If I was guaranteed over $30 million if I got fired, I wouldn't do press conferences unless it cost me that money.

All I can say is everybody knew in the stadium that if we did not move the ball and run the clock out on the last drive it was over. We came out in a run the clock out formation except the time was just shy of 4 minutes and NDSU had 2 TOs. LOL on us.....

So true. On our last 3rd down, I said to a friend it's a guaranteed loss if we don't pick it up.

F*ck him. Go back to the game vs Mizzou. O'Keefe calling the plays. Third down and short. Everyone, save for me, expecting a run. Mizzou stacks box. O'Keefe calls play action and almost scores. You have to run play action on first down. The D will sell out to run. Always. This team is so horribly coached it isn't funny.
