Barta knows his job depends on this. Barta is risk-averse like his boss (KF). He knows if he replaces Kirk and it doesn't work out, that everyone will say, "Tom Davis all over again fella. You're obviously in over your head. Back to NDSU or wherever you came from."

And honestly, he's probably right to have this fear, cuz he really hasn't impressed in any other sport he manages. Even though football isn't anything to brag about, he can point to that as a bright spot and there are enough people who live in constant fear that he can sell it to the tune of tens of millions of dollars.

Kirk has his faults, but I think he (and his agent) are literal genius' when looking at the macro picture. In my lifetime I have never seen anyone so thoroughly outsmart and out-strategize his opponent. And it's not just Barta. He owned Bowlsby and he will own every University President. He really is more cunning than those nitwits. And I honestly wish there was a trophy for that. If only because we could use it to make an empty trophy case not so empty.

Unless he pulls a 10 win season out of his backside he won't make it to 2020. I have long said that he will be gone after 2018. He made a bowl this year, Barta calls that a good job. He will make one next year as well, with the same easy schedule and I expect another 7-5 year.

After that you look at the really bad talent that is coming up and its not hard to see the wheels fall of in 2017. Because nobody can make a big decision in IC they will still give him one more year, plus the buy out will be low so 2018 will be a dumpster fire played to half full Kinnick and will be it for Kirk.

I can never see Barta pulling the trigger and firing Kirk, he's been the poster boy for Iowa for 16 seasons now. Kirk and Barta will come to an agreement and Kirk will retire before he's ever fired.

I don't see KF making it till 2020 but he won't get the boot this season either. I think for the time being the number 1 task should be removing Barta and bringing in a strong AD.

I will be surprised if KF does not retire before his contract is up. Im sure he wants to go out with a good team and I guessing he will come up with one. OH Sorry I know we arnt suppose to say that

That woud be insane for him to retire. Unless of course I'm wrong and he still get the money, but I think if he retires he would be walking away from millions of dollars.

Kirk doesn't need the money so he should be thinking more about his legacy. He's grossed at least $30M in his time at Iowa. I don't think he'll be fired but I do think he'll step down (possibly with some kind financial agreement reached where he doesn't forfeit all of his contract through 2020).

If KF is here until 2020, that would mean he'd be a lame duck coach exactly the way Tom Davis was. That wouldn't exactly be great for recruiting, which surely wouldn't help Iowa to lure another good coach after KF is gone, if no good recruits are coming in.

Not sure anybody wants this situation.. Not if they are smart, anyway.

When he decides to go I don't think the money will be a factor, and if he decides to go I doubt there will be a buy out. Despite what some of you think he is very competitive. Im betting he wants another nice run. JMO

I'm not sure why money would disappear as a factor when it's been so important for this long? I would agree that he wants to go out with a nice run, but the "break the rock" phase is long over and he seems to have lost his mojo. Any number of different personnel decisions would've resulted in more wins this year. I've never seen self-inflicted wounds like I saw this year. Other programs smell blood in the water and we're gonna see the Minnesota game played out in other venues as time goes on. He'll stay to the end in a revealing attempt to squeeze every last dollar out, and get his son the HC position. It makes me sad to see the future unfold this way. People keep bringing up Fry. I think the intrigue, politics and season results will leave an even more bitter taste when it finally ends. There is more ego on all sides in this soap opera than people realize.

kfootball needs an extension on his contract by 2015 seasons completion or he's a lame duck coach from a recruiting stand point. GB and SM have no choice but to make a decision by then, or else, Iowa won't get any recruits and we will head down that slippery slope.

Now, GB and SM could negotiate a 1 year extension and do what I believe kNU did with Pelini and negotiate down kfootballs buyout. Are they that smart?

I wouldn't walk away from $4 Million a year, unless I was doing something I hated... doubt anybody else here would either. It's easy to leave other people's money on the table. If it was yours, you wouldn't. It's funny to hear people say they'd just walk away. Who knows how many millions he has in the bank, but millions more would be better!

Like I said JMO, Also I cant Brian getting the job if we are in a downward spiral when he leaves. If he goes out winning BCS Bowl. who knows

I think if we go 6-6 or worse next year, he'd be close to being asked to retire. With all that we lose to graduation, 6-6 or worse is possible.

I think what he really wants to do is have Brian be hired as coach when he leaves. In order to justify that move, he knows he really needs to pull a 9-3 or better season out within the next few years to have the influence and muscle to pull it off.

This is exactly what happened to Hayden.

I would like to thank teakwonthis for his Barta thread. Pretty much solidifies what I was saying in this thread. Barta and KF will ride off into the sunset together. Can't wait to find out the details of Barta's Golden Parachute. It won't be as good as KF's, but it will be a thousand times more than he deserves.
