Kirk Ferentz on Big Ten Division Announcement

Iowa will be in the East.

You can partially thank Barry Alverez's/Bret Bielema's active lobbying and Barta's/Kirk's indifference for that.

same amount of sense that people used when saying PSU would be in the west.

Putting PSU in the West made sense if you were under the assumption that Michigan and Ohio State would stay together.

If Michigan and Ohio State are going to be split, it only makes sense that PSU remain in the East.

Iowa is not going to to be in the East. Tossing everything else aside, how much sense would that make?

Very little. Madison is further East than Iowa City. If the Big Ten is placing Iowa and Wisconsin in different divisions it's logical to keep Iowa in the West with the Hawks and Cornhuskers playing every year and Iowa and Wisconsin playing in an annual cross over game.

It's also logical to keep Minnesota in the West and place Northwestern in the East with Northwestern and Illinois playing annually in another cross over game.

This way the geographical factor is preserved and parity between divisions is also preserved.

This is totally asinine. You have no evidence that Barta or Ferentz played indifferent. The only evidence you have is that Barry Alvarez loves to hear himself talk.

If you think that Barta was going to sit in a room and let the terms be dictated to him by Barry Alvarez, I think you need to think a lot harder.

I don't know what's going to happen, but if Iowa ends up in the East, it won't be because of Alvarez... 10 other AD's have to sign off on it too, and last time I checked, Wisconsin hasn't sniffed a BCS game this millenium.

Why do I have this sick to my stomach filling Iowa will be screwed and be put in the East? If we are East and Wisconsin is in the West, Barta will have a LOT of explaining to do.

I could be wrong, but I thought I read that the university presidents were the ones that had final say, not the athletic directors.

Why would Presidents have anything to do with an athletic divisional alignment? This has nothing to do with academics.

on the other hand, let's say we are in the South with Illinois, Indiana, Ohio St, Penn St, & Purdue ... our protected rival would be Minnesota, of course ... think what that means for our chances at success over the next five years ... who's going to be favored to win most of the time?

Iowa vs Illinois ? ... Iowa
Iowa vs Indiana ? ... Iowa
Iowa vs Minnesota ? ... Iowa
Iowa vs Ohio St ? ... OSU
Iowa vs Penn St ? ... Iowa
Iowa vs Purdue ? ... Iowa

that's a 5-1 conference record every year, throw in at least one team from the MAC or worse and ISU and we are bowl eligible before we get outta bed

Didn't we lose the last time we played Illinois? Indiana has beaten us a few times of late (James Hardy).

The hold-up, apparently, is with Michigan. There is a great deal of concern that they can return to the level of excellence that they have experienced in the past, which makes the the split difficult. The basic idea of seperating OSU and UM was to allow for them to meet in the conference title game. If UM can't win their division, well...

After seeing Michigan practice, and emergency meeting was held and a new conference split has been discussed:

A:
Ohio State
Penn State
Nebraska
Iowa
Wisconsin
Mich State
Minn
Purdue
Indiana
Illinois
Northwestern

B:
Michigan

The BigTen ADs are working out the exact logistics of this alignment right now, but, with this split, UM is expected to win their division and go to the championship game "most of the time"...

Not so fast there, I think that it is pretty presumptious for you to think that Michigan is going to be able to beat the letter B on a football field anytime soon.
