Kirk Ferentz Downplays Stanley Being Listed No. 1 in New 2-Deep

Kirk Ferentz said not to read much into Iowa's new depth chart showing Nathan Stanley as the No. 1 quarterback. Iowa's coach reiterated Monday that the competition with Tyler Wiegers is even heading into camp.:

Despite what KF is saying, it looks like it is Stanley's job to lose. Stanley is definitely the favorite right now.

But I do believe KF when he says they have not made a final decision and TW still has a chance to win the starting job by taking it away from Stanley.

He also made references to the 1986 team a few times... talking about Chuck being 3rd on the depth. To me that's telling everyone to not be surprised if someone else emerges.

It also tells me that staff has an INABILITY to evaluate skills at the most crucial position on the offensive side of the ball. That gives me great faith!

There's a crack in that door for sure. Is it open enough for Mansell to sneak in there? Or what about Boyle? He's a guy that athletically is on par with what Brad Banks could do yet due to having been at WR last yr everyone has written off. Question is can he play QB and lead? To me honestly this is about as wide open of a QB race as they've had and it'd be fascinating to get to see their practices and be in the QB meeting rooms the month of August to see how it plays out

Meh....it's coach speak to keep everybody competing at the highest level. They know, but won't say. It keeps the #2 guy motivated.

I expect to see some pretty good QB play this year. A loaded backfield with one of the best offensive lines in college football. As a QB If you can't move the ball with going for you then you shouldn't be playing the game.

They gotta put someone at the top to start with... I think he's just being honest saying look if there was a game today Stanley would probably start. But there's not and we'll just have to let it play out and see who's improved since spring ball. I want the more accurate Qb to get the gig. They both have strong enough arms. So whomever is putting the ball where it's supposed to go and throws the most catchable ball on time is who I hope wins.

My initial thought was if it's still an open competition, why didn't they list them as co-starters but I have a feeling they didn't want to have the QB competition be the major story as they head into media day.

So there should never be a depth chart and everyone should get a tropy and a participation medal. And a nice pat on the head.

There is a difference between a depth chart and publicly making statements. None of us know what KF has said in private.
What we do know is his track record on the success or lack of success of some qbs who come in highly rated and don't pan out as well as qbs who digress. Maybe there is a reason for that.

Anemic KF offenses are more common than not.

Been around sports a long time as player and a coach. Some coaches play not to lose. Some coaches discourage creativity and highly punish mistakes, especially when being creative.. Ironically the best QB years have generally been when KF has exactly what I just described he doesn't like. Does that mean that's what he wants or at some points has had no choices.

VB was at his best as a creative young QB.
KF tried to make Banks into a drop back QB
Stanzi's junior year was his best regardless of what stats say
The guy who went to MI
The singer's senior year v junior year.

We all have the broad view. A player does not due to 4 years max and being young.

One thing that is obvious with KF. When the Number One goes down or is out, the #2 is rarely game ready.

So saying that two players are close in ability is equated to coaches being unable to evaluate talent. You obviously have never coached. Many times it comes to a literal flip of a coin to choose a starter.

How many of you are motivated by a boss making you feel insecure?
Dude it's football. Every position has to be earned. If your looking for complacency from your football players your fishing in the wrong creek. That's what separates the men from the boys. You want everyone working their arses off to be their best. Remember the year KF called his team 'fat cats' That was exactly what he thought the culture was on that team then and he didn't want it anymore than any other coach would. KF would sum this up with his now famous phrase. "That's Football"

These depth charts now may as well be written in invisible ink for some of the spots. They just have some names down now because for some reason the media asks for these depth charts to be put out as often as possible so they'll have something to write about... The coaches are just obliging them. KF and most coaches would love nothing better than to not have to put out a depth chart in July prior to freshmen even putting a helmet on... I think it'd almost be best if they kept those in house this time of year so only the players know where they stand with the coaches till it's closer to kickoff. As much as I like to know as much as possible it's sure not a need.

I respectfully disagree with your assessment that the depth chart is released to appease the media. You're right. It does give us something to write about but I think most of us keep what is on there in perspective. I don't know of any of us asking for a depth chart in the 20 years I've covered the team.

Like the media, I think many fans enjoy the depth chart as a guide not something that's written in stone. None of us has access to practice for the most part so it's an outline of what the coaches are seeing.

I think the coaches certainly use it for motivation. For the first time ever, KF called the media together in January of '15 to release an unprecedented postseason two-deep. That was to let everyone know that CJB was the No. 1 QB ahead of JR. That certainly brought with it ramifications as JR ended up of transferring.

Michigan has done away with depth charts under Harbaugh. I'd be fine if Iowa did the same. I guess I just don't see the harm in them if you view them with the perspective of timing. A two-deep in July isn't the same as the one released the during game week.

I have no issue with 2 deeps. If he was letting the kid know through the media, then that's another issues. None of us know what has been said. We do know is success in developing qbs is not so great. For a long-time Big Ten coach his record on that is not up to par. That we do know.

A coach who can get players to condition themselves nearly to hospitalization, motivation isn't the problem.

Getting a qb to perform consistently at a high level over a duration, that has been a problem, especially in the last 10 years or so.
