Kirk Ferentz - 163 Wins

Northwestern's facility came predominantly from a gift from Pat Ryan. They lose money on athletics and I think they will stop playing B1G football in my lifetime.

There is no parity in the B1G, you even admitted it yourself, OSU is in a league of their own. And they're not our Alabama. LSU and Auburn can still make runs at Bama. Georgia and Florida probably can as well on occasion. But no one in the B1G can hold a candle to OSU. Not even close. The only difference from the past is it went from Big 2 little 8 to Big 1, little 13.
Ok...let's look at the last 10 years. OSU has won 4 of the last ten B10 titles. But, they have won three in a row...so in the first six years of the decade, they won one title. I'd say that's holding a candle to them. Lately though...right now...you are right...the last four years...although Iowa beat them by 30 one year...they have been the class of the league.

Alabama has won 5 SEC titles in the last decade...and have been in more title games than OSU. So...not sure what the hell you are talking about. They have been more dominant in the SEC than OSU has been in the B10...and remember, OSU's domination is over the past three years...three titles in a row.

Wasn't OSU on probation one of those years and with an interim coach one of them? Whatever, look at the end of the day, they've lost an average of a fraction of a game in conference play the past several years and a couple of those single losses have bitten them in the ass. They're still the damned favorite every year and the Big Ten's only hope of ever winning a natty.

This. No better example of people not understanding stats than the "winningest coach" thing that ignores the losses.

Glad we have KFz, he's done well...but let's be honest about the numbers.
Schedule 3 wins, play .500 in the Big, go to a bowl every year regardless of record (most of the time), win most home games due to great fan support. Have a fan base that's fine with a nice bowl game and top 20 finish every 3 to 4 years. Presto, the winningest coach formula. Oh, no chance of being fired helps too. Rose bowl wins, 0, Natty's ,0, Big Ten champs, 2, in 21 years. 5 Nattys for Staggs and Hayes. He is very similar to Bo though who never won a Natty and had a bad bowl record.

And a losing record to NW. ANd a slightly above average record against ISU and only because he felt the heat about losing to them.

Not that impressed.

You should apply for the job!

How many times do you say, Man...Iowa got their assed kicked in? or blown out? About once every three years or so. Wisconsin in 2017...Penn State in 2016. How many top ten teams have they beaten in that same period? The point I'm making is that KF's teams are in every game...are never mauled or pushed around like a Nebraska team for example. They bring it every week. I want them to win more close games though like 2015 and 2019...but the point is that every year has the potential to be 2015. Look at last year...three close losses that could have gone either way...if we get a break in any of them.

I understand that people would like to see conference championships and National titles...I would too. I'm afraid to say, in a state like Iowa, where there are what, 10-12 division one kids every year that can make an impact at that level? Iowa is 94% white too. Read into that what you want. Recruiting, although it continues to change, is still about geography to an extent. Iowa is doing better in bringing in kids from outside of their normal radius...and I think it continues to improve...once we get past the racial issues.

Personally, for me, I like the way Iowa plays the game. They are prepared, usually disciplined, don't turn it over...and play really good defense. BF has got to get the offense to be more consistent in scoring points.

Lastly, I really wanted Iowa to fire KF and hire Scott Frost. I mean...you people would be thrilled losing 7 of your last 8 right? or losing 9 of your last 17. Be wary of thinking another coach to be your savior. It could be a Life of Brian situation.

Yep, those are totally it. We were absolutely in that bowl game against Florida after the 2016 season. And that Rose Bowl. That 35-0 at halftime was a Rose Bowl record! What year was the HawkSlayer Bowl? We had them right where we wanted them. I suspect this team gets blown out more than we recall because we as Hawk fans have been conditioned to repress bad memories.

I was referencing regular season wins and losses...but ok to include those to. So four in five years with two of those being bowl games where we were overmatched. 2 Regular season games in five years. I'd still say the overwhelming evidence is that our guys are in every game...and aren't overmatched...so, in every matchup, other than those two, against the top teams...we were in the game with a chance to win...and we won a bunch of of those matchups with top rated teams...right?

You started this thread to sing the virtues of KF, and you certainly have stuck to your guns. I give you credit and respect you for that.

The main difference in our opinions seems to be that you take the stance of a Ferentz supporter, and I take the stance of a Hawkeye supporter. Iowa is in almost every game, but there are several instances where Iowa should be blowing out opponents, not getting by in the last five minutes of a game relying on a game winning stop or drive. As many times as the Hawks have intercepted a pass or blocked a field goal to secure a victory, there are as many where they failed to do so and lost. Either way, it is stressful and exhausting as a fan.

I say stop playing to the level of your opponents and go for the jugular. Ferentz has proven again and again that he will play close to the vest, sitting on leads and playing conservative offense to hopefully not lose instead of playing aggressively and dashing opponents hopes when the time is right. Also, please show up and finish games when everyone is watching. The embarrassments of losing to USC in the Orange Bowl like they did, or choking the last two minutes of the B1G championship, or losing in the Rose Bowl to Stanford like they did far outweigh the glory of crushing OSU in a regular season game or winning against ISU because of a Cyclone special teams gaffe.

I respect Kirk for his accomplishments over the years and for keeping Iowa in the "relevant" category for most of his tenure, but to be honest I wanted him gone before the 2015 season. That miraculous year only secured five more years (and probably more) of me hoping to not need heart medication. I would personally welcome a new coach and would wish Kirk nothing but the best. Good or bad, change is inevitable and who knows, maybe the Hawkeyes would benefit?

Remember that time we beat mighty UNI by blocking not one but TWO last second FGs. Yes, Kirk ball at its finest.
Yes...I remember that...I also remember the team winning the next 8 games, losing to NW because we lost Stanzi and an overtime loss to OSU in Columbus with a inexperienced QB. That team then went down the Miami and beat the crap out of a Georgia Tech team that was scoring at will on other teams. Kirk ball at it's finest...touche'.

I not saying Kirk is a bad coach, but he is clearly not suited for the company of Legends. Longevity is the reason he is moving up the list, along with a fan base that's tolerant of not being a challenger for championships. A fan base like Michigan would already be calling for his head. Expectations are lower at Iowa. Iowa State is, the last time I checked, in the state of Iowa and sit atop their conference. Seems they have higher expectations than Iowa fans.

You mean to say that expectations are higher at Michigan than they are ar Iowa? Wow! Never would have guessed!
