And then there was the Captain. Let that sink in for a few minutes. Four more years...and Schembechler could be behind KF too. Say what you will about how Iowa plays...he sure the hell must be doing something right.

He has done well, but Schembechler and Hayes had 76-77% winning percentages. Ferentz’s is closer to 60%.

If you hang around long enough and play enough Kent St's......seriously Kirk has been a good coach at keeping Iowa competitive through the years and accomplishing some note-worthy things along the way.

Odd that I opened HN and saw your new post as I was thinking after seeing some youtube highlights of KF hawk wins that KF has led the hawks to some great moments. I was thinking of starting a thread about all the great wins and moments of KF era.

When the hawks have the offensive line, just above avg offense, and their usual really good scoring defense they are fun to watch. And then when you add in the types of special teams we saw last game and WOW the results can be special.

We will see if KF goes for 4 more more years. And yes I agree with looking at the Win % but football was different back when Woody and Amos were coaching as far as way more scholarships, players getting off season jobs with great pay, and other perks that gave certain programs all the leverage.

Evy and Fry proved what could be done at Iowa.

I get what you are saying...but I'm also going to call bullshit. Schembechler and Hayes started every damn year knowing they were going to go 9-1 or 10-0 just based on the talent advantage they had over every school in the B10. It was Ohio State and Michigan every damn year because the other programs were terrible. From 1968 to 1982 Ohio State or Michigan were the only schools to win a B10 championship. Bo and Woody beat up on schools who didn't have the coaching, facilities, or the national recruiting ability.

In KF's tenure...the money in the B10 conference has allowed schools to level the playing field. Look at the facility upgrades across the B10. The coaching talent across the B10 is light years ahead of where it was during the Ohio State - Michigan era for Schembechler and Woody Hayes. The addition of Penn State was a big deal too. Right now, in the Big 10...you better come to play every damn week...and that's even more so as Maryland and Rutgers start to put it together...because they have money now too. All Ohio State and Michigan had to do in their golden era was show up...not turn it over...and they win by 3-4 touchdowns. It's a different ballgame now.

Sure...Ohio State is still the class of the league...that's not changed...but teams challenge them now. Wisconsin is on a good run, Michigan State was dominant a few years there...Penn State has had some success. KF has won a few...and been close a few other times.

I think this is a great point that is often overlooked. There is so much more parity in today's college football (outside of perhaps 6 or 7 teams) that unless you're coaching at one of those teams, you're not getting 76-77% winning percentages.

This is based on a weird stat.

Total wins by a Big Ten head coach, including both conference wins and non-conference wins, but only while his program was officially a member of the Big Ten.

So Joe Paterno's wins while PSU was an independent don't count. But Paterno's non-conference wins while PSU was a member of the Big Ten do count.

So even though Nebraska is now a member of the Big Ten, none of Tom Osborne's victories count because Nebraska was not in the Big Ten at the time.

But I am OK with that. It's just a weird stat, is all I am saying.

I would believe a more meaningful stat may be counting only the Big Ten conference game victories.

I call bullshit right back. If Ferentz's teams would have just "shown up" against all of the directional schools, ISU, Northwestern, etc. over the years, his winning percentage would go up by at least five points.

For every loss to overmatched/outclassed opponents as Bo and Woody had, Ferentz has two or three. You can't be placed in the upper echelon of coaches just because of your win total. You also have to dominate the teams you are supposed to.

Anybody worried about the kids entering the transfer portal? Now its up to 4 since the Purdue game. This trend seems scary

Nope, money did nothing. The scholarship limits helped somewhat, but not really that much other than neutering Michigan. Going back to the 2012 season, Ohio State has lost a grand total of 5 conference games. 5. Only one of those losses was at home, the game where Sparty mercifully beat them on a sloppy field in 2015 so Iowa drew Sparty instead of OSU for the conference championship game.

The talent gap at OSU is so ridiculous to the rest of the conference right now that in order to beat them one of the following must be true: (a) OSU has a terrible or freshman QB, (b) OSU's coach has lost the team or gotten or probation or something, or (c) you play an absolutely perfect game and catch them on an off day like Purdue in '18 or Iowa in '17.

It's seriously been that way for about 20 years. I pity anyone who takes the Michigan HC job because the gulf between UM and OSU right now is gargantuan and the mouthbreather Wal-Mart Wolverines won't tolerate another decade of straight losses to OSU.

Well, when you are at a school long enough, you'll eventually get there. As pointed out, it's probably more accurate to measure the wins, winning % and time at institution.

Fair post. The bold is actually a great point.

The money did nothing...because money always does nothing right. Money allowed Iowa to build facilities on par with any school in the country. Money has allowed Northwestern, despite playing at a high school stadium, to build football facilities that will likely surpass Iowa's.

The money is everything...the Big 10 Network has changed the landscape with what? Money. Ohio State has remained dominant because they recruit nationally and they keep hiring great coaches. They are our Alabama. When you get to the next Tier...Wisconsin, Penn State...then the next Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Northwestern...any of these teams can step up and beat anyone. There is parity in the league...behind OSU.

Northwestern's facility came predominantly from a gift from Pat Ryan. They lose money on athletics and I think they will stop playing B1G football in my lifetime.

There is no parity in the B1G, you even admitted it yourself, OSU is in a league of their own. And they're not our Alabama. LSU and Auburn can still make runs at Bama. Georgia and Florida probably can as well on occasion. But no one in the B1G can hold a candle to OSU. Not even close. The only difference from the past is it went from Big 2 little 8 to Big 1, little 13.

I remember a time when winning 60% of our games was a flipping pipe dream... Subtract KFs first two seasons records and what's his % then?
