Kirk comments on Coker tonight and special teams

On hawktalk....Kirk opened apologizing for being a few minutes late....said they were working on kickoff coverage :)

Coker is back practicing this week. Also mentioned Troy Johnson and Bruce Davis back on special teams this week. Said no excuses for the poor play.

More to come if applicable.

Ferentz also said that Norm Parker has not been involved in the game plan for this week. That surprises me, I thought that he might be able to help out a bit. Not saying he shoulda left the hospital just saying that i thought the coaches could have came to him to discuss the game plan . Ferentz did say that he has visited with him at the hospital a couple times this week. Maybe Parker gave Ferentz some advise but Ferentz doesn't consider that being involved in the game plan

sounds like this is a great opportunity for the other Defensive coaches to "debut" for Norm's position. Since we know Norm is our coach for as long as he wants, we should name a D-Coordinator "in-waiting" if he is already on staff for these very moments during the season that Norm cannot go. Besides our WR coach (soup); who was the last Coach to fill a position not from an "in-house" promotion? I saw somewhere that we are one of the only programs not to change a single coach over the last three years(no link).

Honestly this tells me two things.

1) This is a little more serious than his previous issues.
2) This is more than likely Norm's last year.

I've seen first hand what the big D can do to a person, it's a horrific, horrific disease.

I doubt Ferentz has done anything more than checking in with Norm, seeing how he is doing and assuring him that his health is more important than Arizona's offense.

Kirk fielded a question in his presser about Norm, asking if it was his back. Kirk said it was. Norm has been in a cast for 11 of the last 14 months thanks to the surgery he had before last season. So it's not a new complication like he needs another toe amputated. He's having back issues thanks to the cast. So this doesn't sound super serious.

so being in a cast for 10-14 months is not "super serious"

and that cast being a BACK CAST (especially because i have never heard of a back cast)--- I have heard of back brace's

And I believe the D-coordinator in waiting is Derrell Wilson, the LB's coach who called the game against ISU.

I just mean that it's not a further direct complication from the disease. He doesn't need further amputation. Eventually the need for the cast will pass, and the back issues that go with it.

thanks for the input on the coach in-waiting, i fully anticipate kirk keeping that close to the vest to avoid and public fall out. i personally think that he will coach for 2 more years, but in these situations we need a servicable replacement that is known so we as a fan base do not freak out (and know where to point the finger as well)

I just hope he comes back...I doubt even he knows just how truly important and needed he is to our team. I am sure we will do fine without him against Arizona...but it just can't be the same without him at least in the box upstairs calling plays. I hope he gets well, he has been through a whole lotta stuff these last few years.

It will only be fine if KF has learned his lesson from last time. Remember, ASU hung 44 on our vaunted 2004 defense. This is the same defense with 6 future NFL players.

That being said, KF usually learns his lesson.

That being said, his comments look about exactly the same as the last time.

That being said, he learned his communication method from Belichek, so basically you have to take everything his says with a massive dose of salt.

The linebackers on this year's defense aren't quite as good as the 2004 bunch (understatement). But I think the D-Line is better, as is the secondary. And while Foles is a very good QB, Andrew Walter he ain't. And the 'Cats also don't have a receiver as good as Derek Hagan was, or a TE as good as Zach Miller.

The 2004 D line had four guys that all ended up in NFL camps and three guys that ended up on rosters. The Fourth was an undersized guy with a big motor. Sound familiar? Now, the 2010 lines upside is higher, and they are more physical. But, the 2004 line might have been quicker off the ball. The 2010 backs are better than the healthy 2004 backs.

As far as Zona is considered. Foles not Walter? Sure. But I think Foles is capable of a Walter-like game. Also, there is no Hagan, but there is Criner. That guy is more physical than Hagan. Also, don't discount the Tight End position. That kid can play. Is he Miller? No. But I liken it to Reisner not being Moeaki. (I know Tony didn't play in the game last year BTW). Also, I would put Zona's backs over ASU's 2004 backs.

I can't believe that everyone still brings up the 2004 ARIZONA STATE loss. This was a totally different team. ASU was a very power full team and is not only a different school, but was much more highly touted than UofA. What makes everyone go back to that game? Do you think if we go to the Rose Bowl this year we'll get beat 44-? like we did against Washington? I don't think so.

Exactly! great point.

The cast he has been wearing isn't actually related to his toe amputation. He's been wearing a walking cast because he has diabetic ulcers on his feet and they wont heal. The cast is supposed to aid with that.

It also gets beyond this particular issue. Diabetes is a terrible terrible disease. When it gets to the point of requiring amputation it's also safe to assume it's attacking his eye sight, heart, and other organs. Again I've seen first hand what this desease can do to a person, and I can't imagine trying to coach a football team while battling through it.

I don't have any inside knowledge, and I'm not trying to spread rumours. But I think it's fairly likely we've seen norm coach his last football game.
