If I had to guess, and I am just guessing, but I'm sure someone has the stat. But, quick guess and estimate in my head is that Iowa is probably in top 5 to 7 of the FBS for wins over the last decade. They have to be, I could be wrong, but I bet I am not. Win totals over last 10 years have been

I get it, they've been beat by CFB elite, but like, that's what happens to everyone who isn't CFB elite most seasons. But I guess what I am saying here is this... do you think it's likely for Iowa to go the next decade under another coach and be better than 89-32? To win more than 70% of their games? I don't think that's sustainable at Iowa, yet, it kind of has been under the back half of Kirk's tenure, so maybe it is? I feel like that's coaching. Pretty good coaching. Better coaching then we've really ever had before at Iowa.
I don't know shit about F, but I am not excited for that to end and IMO, Iowa will win more games the next 2 or 3 seasons with Kirk vs bringing someone else in....so I vote for more wins.

That's a pretty thin reed for deciding she knows how to find a top end football head coach. My wife could watch Iowa's football games on tape delay for the past 3 years and conclude that the offensive coordinator needed to be fired. I don't give her credit for determining the emperor has no clothes. I do give her credit for how she deftly handled a very sticky situation.
But, none of that means she knows shit about hiring a football coach.
Looks like 11th out of P4 and ND.
edit: technically 10th, I guess we are tied with Oregon for wins

Thanks, so, yeah, again, what I said.
If one wanted to play Devil's advocate...we are just as close to the bottom 3rd of the P4 as we are to the top 3. So, we have risen to near the top of the also rans, but we are still miles from elite.
I am with you, I enjoy consistent winning, but I have sympathy for those that hope for the occasional taste of something more. If we could have that same win total, but with a few higher highs and lower lows, I would eagerly take it.

You are basically describing the Wisconsin program from 2010-2019. Where they got every ounce out of the program that they possibly could and if you were a Badger fan, you really couldn’t complain.
Contrast that to Iowa 2010-2024, and despite all the 8+ win seasons, it feels like there was meat left on the bone.

Your post is incredibly logical, and is therefore probably unpopular on HN. I agree that at times, it's been tough to watch these games, but I love the wins. We looked rather dreadful against Nebby, for example. We won that game. I'd rather look terrible and win than flashy and give up 28 points to Raiola and the Sand People.
I feel confident that the next coach will not have anywhere near the success KF has had. Very few coaches at any university have a better and consistent winning culture.
I'm gonna enjoy the wins while they last. This year was mildly disappointing, but given the QB injuries and new OC, we still have 3 out of 4 trophies from our main rivalry games. It's not too bad. I'm sure Fleck, Campbell, and Ruhle will be thrilled when KF leaves.

Even for schools that have had the collision of good luck....
Take away the Big 10 teams like Purdon'ts, Indianas, Illinois' that have a decent year or two every now and then. It's complete drudgery for the 10 years in between. Same with "comparables" like KS, KState.
With the exception of Alabama, Georgia, and Oklahoma , even a bulk of the 'blue bloods' have stretches of unmemorable football. Even miserable at times. Even Oklahoma's not exactly lighting it up. Michigan, Clemson, Auburn, Florida, LSU, and Texas? All have some extended rough stretches (currently, or in the past) often featuring some coach cycling. Nerdbraska/Colorado....'nuff said. Miami, FSU...have had some brutal stretches. Notre Dame's a big donut.
I don't need to see him going out on a high. I'll settle for a solid. No black mark, like holding on to another Brain for too long. Or leaving the cupboard bare. Which, seems kinda really hard to do in this era. Or some other lawsuit type thing out there. We'll have had damn near a half century of prideful, mostly enjoyable football under just two coaches. One well loved. And one who's arguably performed comprehensively just as well, if not better.
Most fans are like "Remember the Brady Hoke/Scott Frost years where we had zero faith in the guy at the top of the program?" Iowa fans be like "Crap, we had a bad assistant coach for about two years too many."

Iowa needs to get younger coaches ASAP.
Yeah you always run the risk of getting a coach flames out. Schools like Indiana, SMU, Arizona State (just to name a few) have seemed to hit home runs with their HC.

Stop making sense with facts and statistics and stuff. There are people on this board who are just sick and tired of having 8-10 wins per season. It's just boring! And also, some folks just don't like winning the way that Iowa wins. I mean winning is just not enough. You have to win in a fun way, not the boring way that KF wins. Let's tear down Kinnick while we are at it. Its old and stuffy and that Wave thing is so played out. As a matter of fact, let's move the whole campus to Des Moines where there is better coffee shops downtown.

Relax GenXer. You can be critical and frustrated with Kirk and still want him around. Those things are not mutually exclusive. Despite all the winning the last 10 years, it is okay to say there could have been a little bit more.
With the kind of money the Big is getting from TV we could afford to pay a proven top coach from outside our conference. I think many would come to love living in Iowa City and thus want to stay for awhile. Besides that we have some pretty fine candidates on our staff already. I am a fan of our AD so far. She has hit it out of the park. Keep it up!

That said, wanting KF to still be the coach but be less "Ferentzy" is a hard ask. He is who he is. I think what we really want is for KF to continue to let Lester overhaul the offense while hoping that Parker can continue to keep the defense elite and that Woods stays put.

Ferentz does change, it's just usually just a couple years late. Moving to West Coast offense with Tim is another one.
