In his weekly press conference, Rob reported that KF said Fant is a specialist! What the hell does that mean? Your overall best offensive weapon and athlete is a specialist. I’m sorry, trying to understand this as much as I can, but as a fan I think that’s a giant load of crap.

I think it means you only want to use him in specialized situations. I can see it. He should only be in during short yardage plays as a run blocker. They tried him in the slot at the end of the PSU game and he messed up the audible causing Stanley to throw the game losing INT. It makes sense to limit the situations in which you use him after that snafu.

On one of the radio shows they said Fant was doing what he was supposed to do - relaying the audible call to the outside wide receiver. The ball was snapped while Fant was doing this because they were hurrying to beat the play clock. Issue was not Fant messing up, it was not calling a time out.

Fant is a TE who can't block. Kirk is a 1970s coach and in the 1970s, TEs blocked. Not sure why this has anyone fired up. Seems like normal KF talk to me.
Shit KF doesn't even play WR who can't block. For him to play a TE, who is actually lined up next to the OL, who can't block is borderline crazy for Ferentz.

A good coach finds a way to get your most explosive player on the field. If he isn't the best blocker or makes an occasional mental error you live with it because the upside of the big play is a net gain.

Fant blocks fine. Maybe not as well as Hockenson but better than any WR. If you look at the 4th quarter of Wisconsin he was in almost exclusively on run plays and he was out every 3rd down pass play.

Kirk just copied what Mike Shannonhan did with the Bronco teams of the late 90's, early 2000's. He has made some adjustments, but a lot of the concepts are still the same. Shannonhan's kid Kyle has adapted and I think that is what Brian Ferentz is trying to get to, but the old man can't let go of the offense altogether.

Folks, look, there's no way I can be accused of being a kirk ferentz fan. but in this case, i do believe he's absolutely correct. Fant is a specialist. Fant's specialty is dominating defenses deep, mid-range and short. so clearly, when your goal is to only use Fant as a specialist, you should only use him when those three outcomes are needed or desired. otherwise, you keep him on the sidelines.

Nope. You move him to receiver and don’t put Cooper or Groeneweg in the game. You move him around on the field, not to the sideline.
With the emphasis on blocking maybe he should find an offensive line that can actually block someone. KF is simply pissed at Fant, and he is giving him and his family, along with Iowa fans the middle finger.
