I'll tell you that. They were a hard hitting defense. This was probably a good game for Iowa to have on the schedule secondary to that. It can only help. I was surprised how hard they were hitting on defense. I think their defense is legit, and again, might pay dividends for being on Iowa's schedule this year.

I mean they are going to get a cupcake next week then after that it's time to put the "Big Boy" pants on!!

I couldn't tell but I still clear the hell up in the nose bleed section and my binoculars are not all that great. :)

You can't sugarcoat Iowa's issues. Kent's aggressive style on both sides of the ball provide more possession opportunities. Iowa's yardage output was meh considering.

Iowa's offense allows for D's to sell out aggressively to stop certain points of an Iowa attack. Thus Kent did that and it made them appear to be more aggressive. Fitz is salivating already.

TAMU had 600 yards against Kent and played the back up qb got snaps and passes.

That said, 3 and oh when one or two losses could be in the books.

For one, I really wasn't attempting to sugarcoat any Iowa issues. You often times write your own story line or detour the topic when responding.

I wasn't really referring to the coaches/team scheming so much, I was referring to when the players tackled, they tackled hard and had a certain nasty to them when hitting, at least early on in the game. They were pumped and the coaches did a good job of getting them jacked up to hit hard.

Could you dive into this a little deeper? Exactly what did Kent State do aggressively on both sides of the ball?
As Melrose mentioned, they were aggressive. To me they appeared that way as well. If you have a pretty good idea what a team is going to do, you can go hard at it, not playing it safe for suprises. That is what I meant. This may be a banner year, but also may disintegrate in a hurry. Teams are going to make Petras beat them with his arm. He can't get his feet set right.

On offense, they were hurry up and challenged with Big plays. To me they aggressively went after what Iowa was giving them.

I agree they were nasty. Iowa will see Fitz and others do the same way aggressively attacking the limited options Iowa's offense use. They can't sell out if they don't know what's coming. It will get worse.

To me the story line isn't that Kent was aggressive. It was that they aggressively attacked what they were pretty sure Iowa was going to do.

Kent State runs an up-tempo offense, the coaches knew this going in and had the defense prepared for it. That's not really "aggressiveness" it's what Kent State does and it didn't work. In fact Iowa was so prepared for it that they managed to change personnel on the field quickly without a single 12 man penalty.

On defense Kent State didn't do anything special either in terms of "aggressiveness". Going in Iowa knew they had a good secondary, Petras didn't throw a single INT or give up a single sack.

It's amazing to see you find ways to run Iowa into the ground, week after week. I'm seeing that pattern Fry has been talking about.

Well, I disagree. This team has the ability to be special. As close to a playoff talent as the Hawks have been in for a long time. I also listen to the radio broadcasts and frankly they said the same things, so take it up with them too I guess. NW is the big object in the way as Fitz will exploit these things. Being a fan doesn't mean one doesn't analyze. What do you want, Stepford Hawkeye Nation?

As a fan I could care less about mistakes. That Petras hasn't thrown any INTs isn't because of much other than luck and conservatism. Many of his incompletions are underthrows which are going to produce less INTs. If I'm going down, I'm going down swinging.

Iowa most years has more than their fair share of the ingredients of what a CFP appearance would take. Typically isn't about 75%. This year it's higher. It s just that the missing components just aren't close. One year is was largely punting for example. The punter wasn't D1 caliber. Petras has the best release of about any QB Iowa has had since Hartlieb and Vlasic. His arm strength is superb. He can't get his body under control and the 2nd straight QB we've seen with this. Defenses know he can't do it, so that opens a part of the field that doesn't need defended and thus a D can more aggressively pursue. Fitz will aggressively pursue the run game and make Petras throw on the move to receivers.

Why in the hell are you worried about a team that Iowa doesn't play until November 6th? There are 5 more games to be played before Iowa has to worry about Northwestern.

I listened to WHO on the way home, heard some talk about Petras missing wide open receivers and IKM's fumbling. I didn't hear anything alarming about Kent State "aggressiveness" or how Fitz will exploit it, this sounds like stuff you are making up. Again, Kent State runs an up-tempo offense which, I guess, you can call aggressive. To me a style of offense doesn't make it "aggressive", teams can be aggressive in a Pro-Style offense, a run and shoot, or any other style of offense they run. Iowa defended the up-tempo offense very well even though they rarely see it.

Northwestern doesn't run an up-tempo offense they've been known to run the spread under Fitz but they have changed it up since Bajakian has been the coordinator.

Didn't say any of that. They commented that Kent was aggressively attacking on both sides of the ball. You mentioned melting down against PSU. NW has been a frustration for most of us over the years and it's not hard to see it coming.

As stated, this could be a very special team. Hate to see it not happen. Kind of like the defender not wrapping up Barkley for a loss late against PSU. Wrap your arms around him and Iowa wins. Fans can get frustrated. Having another QB that can't get his body straight on basic fundamentals is frustrating.

We can have different opinions and discuss/argue and so on. It's ok. And if they get a few things straightened out, I expect Iowa to be unbeaten going into NW.

Exactly what were they doing "aggressively attacking both sides of the ball"? Specifically the defense since I already know you think the up-tempo offense they run is aggressive to you. What were they doing on defense that made them more aggresive?

Way too early to worry about Northwestern.

I think I explained it. On D they were flying to the ball or the offensive target. They didn't play anything soft. Iowa plays a soft zone or soft man coverage at times. Kent State didn't do it and eventually, they paid.

You know it is ok to see things differently.

Worried about NW because they aren't equal or better than the Hawks but oft a loss playing the same way with more talent than Kent State. Think back to A Robs concussion against MSU. They were angry (by then the game was over) but Iowa kept sending him into a D that by then was overplaying the playing the run and he got beat up.

Ok, so you really don't know. That's fine.

Northwestern does not play an up-tempo offense.

Not sure what the argument is. I know NW does not play up tempo offense or really D. They do play aggressively which was my point.

Thx for the discussion and I do hope you have a nice evening.
