Keno Davis Post-game

I actually kind of enjoyed Keno's presser. Definitely pretty light-hearted with a little humor, too. Loved the bit about not going small, they're just small.

I don't know why you would think he left drake early. He left at just the right time to make his max payday. I doubt he ever gets another major job.

if he does as good a job at CMU as he did at Drake somebody will give him a call.. but i bet he gets pretty picky about where goes to.. I would love to have Keno take over for Fran when he retires.

I mean in terms of building a program and a solid name for himself. He was the hot name at the time for 1 season of work.

I just thought if he had stayed a little longer, he might have gotten more head coaching experience.

OMG. Put this in the Wayyyyyyy Too Early thread. Or bury it right here and now.:eek::confused:

Maybe that's the best financial offer he'll ever get. It's certainly possible, perhaps even likely. But leaving after one year to take over Providence wasn't a good move. Providence is consistently a cellar dweller in arguably the top basketball conference in America. Not a good place to get your start in the power six conferences.

He would have been much better off waiting for a Pac-10/12 school to have an opening.

but if you are at Drake, what are the odds of being a "hot coaching commodity" again after the year that Drake made the NCAA tourney with Keno at the helm? The answer is not good. Drake is fighting an uphill battle to consistently be on par with UNI, Creighton, Southern Illinois, etc. in the Valley. In that case Keno is left waiting for a Pac-10/B1G offer that was never going to come.

He took his shot at Providence at it didn't work out. He's young enough that if he wins at Central Michigan he'll likely get another shot somewhere. He got paid well at Providence and further honed his coaching going against some of the top coaches in the country.

I agree. He left Drake a little too early but could you blame him with the paycheck he got?

I can blame him. Bingo is a dead man to me.

The two worst people on the planet.

Exactly. Keno did a great job coaching Drake that year but it was not likely to happen again. If you sit around waiting for the perfect big time job to open, it's probably never going to happen. Just look at Chris Lowery, he was the next big thing in 2007, three straight terrific seasons at Southern Illinois, sweet sixteen appearence and four years later he didn't even win ten games and was fired. Sometimes you have to jump when you get the chance, Keno did and he got paid. Good for him.

If Keno didn't jump to Providence when he did, he would likely still be at Drake without his current fat bank account.

Based on how things went for Keno at Providence - ABSOLUTELY NOT. Maybe he will develop as a coach and will have success, and he would be a better hire at that point, but that's all if's and but's. It's the same reason I was never a big fan of the idea of a Dana Altman hire.. The guy was good in the Missouri Valley, but didn't do much at K-State. We'll see what he does at Oregon.

I love Tom Davis as much as most Hawkeye fans, and that makes me WANT to like Keno as a coach too - but I have to listen to my head and not my heart. Just having Iowa ties in itself is not enough reason for me to want to our AD hire someone as our coach.
