Kansas fired Weis; Michigan, you now have an out, if you want it.

This is false..Michigan can get the recrutis we only wish we could. Michigan can recruit with the big boys. They have had idiots for coaches. Ferentz could win big there if he would bring in a decent OC.

Recruiting is just one part of being a great program these days. The southern schools are willing to do things the BIG is not to be successful. Until that changes, the NC Trophy will be south of the Mason Dixon line.

I think Michigan is making a huge mistake by not acting now. USC, as much as I hate them, did it right. You cut bait immediately....put a stopgap in place with an assistant as interim....and then start putting feelers out now to gauge interest from coaches' representatives. Doing that shows the fans, the current players and the recruits that you are serious about excellence and you aren't going to put up with the dilution of the brand equity that's been built up over all these years.

Other than Lane Kiffin, Brady Hoke might be the most underqualified head coach at a major conference school I've ever seen in my lifetime.

I'm not sure if he'll be in line for a bigger job. Google tells me that the biggest names to interview him are UConn and Louisville. I think he'd be a good hire at a P5 school, but don't know if it will happen.

I really doubt Michigan would hire the MSU DC. Butyouneverknow.
Why not? Would be the perfect blow against their in-state rival who is on top of them at the moment.

Exactly. Until we get things like over-signing and bagmen outlawed by the NCAA across the board the south will rule big time football.

True ,they should just go ahead and give the NC title to the SEC Champ.. They cheat like hell. I'll take pride in a Big Championship knowing we don't stoop to that level.

Does Jim Harbaugh really strike you as the kind of person who'd have the patience to fly around and try to convince 16 year olds to come to Michigan?

I hope not but he's done it before at Stanford and UC San Diego. Obviously he's a Michigan alum so that could be a huge factor. Bo Schembechler 2.0? Lots of folks on the Michigan blogs think he is the top choice followed by his brother John and Les Miles.

Lots of rumors out there ...

Michigan needs a boring stabilizer to go in and shore up the atrocity in the trenches that has developed. If Miami runs Philbin, he would be the perfect coach to get their lines built up, which would take them back to the Lloyd Carr days. It would be boring, but they could get competitive again. I suspect they'll end up swinging for another home run and have a 90% chance of striking out when they could try for a sac bunt and have a 90% chance of success (albeit with slightly upside).

If Philbin becomes available doubt hes gets interest from Michigan but I would love to see KF axe Davis and bring him back to Iowa.

First thing they do is thrown the kitchen sink at Harbaugh, after that who knows.

There is still lots of great fruit to pick from the Hayden Fry coaching tree.
Phil is the one assistant Iowa can't lose.

Ed Orgeron used to be an assistant at Tennessee, coached USC/Ole Miss, and is not coaching anywhere now.
He's a solid recruiter and would probably listen to a call from Kansas.

I'd prefer to bring Orgeron to Iowa as our recruting co-ordinator.

He was doing that just a few years ago. I'd prefer that to trying to massage the massive egos of millionaires who don't always want to work hard.

Michigan is getting into the place that Nebraska was around 2007. Their history and expectations are not in line with reality. They are not a national championship contender any longer and never will be again on a yearly basis.

Both programs have boosters and fans who refuse to believe this and think a new coach will get them back to where they used to be. Not gonna happen. With that said, year in and year out Michigan's floor should be 7-8 wins with 10+ and a shot at the BIG mixed in from time to time. No shame in that but its not 1997 anymore, Jim Harbaugh isn't going to change that.

Totally different situations.

Nebraskas success was far far more unlikely than Michgans.

A hundred things had to line up perfectly for Nebraska to be as good as they were in that tiny population state, and those things, (partial qualifiers, small conference, ect) are gone for good. On the other hand the only difference between UM and OSU is the coach.

Harbaugh puts them right back on par with OSU if not better in a few seasons.

As usual, Iowa plays the waiting game while Kansas gets out front and starts looking for a new football coach. They will get the best available coach while Iowa plays games and waits for other schools to make up their mind. Where have I seen this before?

If Barta acted he'd be checking the staffs of the MAC schools.
