Justify the extention of FRAN

I have posted this in the past but it's time for a reboot.

Villanova under Jay Wright...First National Championship in Year 15. I see a lot of 1st and 2nd Round NCAA losses and some NIT berths early in his career. I also see an outlier season of 13-19 in 2012...4 years before his National Championship. What were they thinking? He should have been let go for sure after that 2012 season. He clearly couldn't coach and the AD was incompetent. What other explanation could there be? It's not like other teams are good and also trying to win games.

2002 - 19-13 NIT Quarterfinals
2003 - 15-16 NIT 1st Round
2004 - 18-17 NIT Quarterfinals
2005 - 24-8 NCAA Sweet 16
2006 - 28-5 NCAA Elite 8
2007 - 22-11 NCAA 1st Round
2008 - 22-13 NCAA Sweet 16
2009 - 30-8 NCAA Final 4
2010 - 25-8 NCAA 2nd Round
2011 - 21-12 NCAA 1st Round
2012 - 13-19
2013 - 20-14 NCAA 1st Round
2014 - 29-5 NCAA 2nd Round
2015 - 33-3 NCAA 2nd Round
2016 - 35-5 National Champs
2017 - 32-4 NCAA 2nd Round
2018 - Ranked 2nd or 3rd...depending on the poll

I bet Villanova is glad they were patient with Wright.

And Wright did not inherit a bare cupboard. Villanova went to the NCAA from 1995-1997 and again in 1999. They were in the NIT in 2000 and 2001.

You should feel bad for trying to compare that situation to ours.

2005 - 24-8 NCAA Sweet 16
2006 - 28-5 NCAA Elite 8
2007 - 22-11 NCAA 1st Round
2008 - 22-13 NCAA Sweet 16
2009 - 30-8 NCAA Final 4
2010 - 25-8 NCAA 2nd Round
2011 - 21-12 NCAA 1st Round
2012 - 13-19

Damn you Windsor. Posting this actually makes me agree with Cy5656, Fran isn't even CLOSE to this list. If Fran had 7 NCAA tournaments in a row after missing out the first 3 years, nobody, and I mean NOBODY around here would be upset with Fran at all. Let alone if in those 7 NCAA appearances in a row there was 4 sweet 16's, an elite 8 and a final 4.

Villanova has always been a healthy program under Wright. Our program is in shambles or at least fractured at this point. It's really just a terrible comparison.

Least our players didn't receive $ from agents like the big boys such as Duke, UNC, KY, MSU. Oh and ISU as well.

Not nearly enough of a development to create a justification but at least Fran doesn't cheat. Pretty clear with the lack of athleticism on the team he doesn't cheat actually.

Barta has directed Fran and Kirk to recruit players with character and focus less on athletic talent. He wants competent, honest, stand up players.

That's not a bad idea...how about it we expect a competent, honest and stand up AD...?

It all filters down from the top...leaderless teams, gutless players, excuse makers...

If it turns out programs and coaches had knowledge about payouts to recruits, those teams should all be banned for the NCAA tournament for a minimum of two years, period. It won't happen though because ratings would crater as sponsors wouldn't want to be involved if the Dukes and UKs weren't involved or would pay less, thus bringing in less profits for the NCAA.

There is a lot to criticize Fran about, obviously, but it appears he's running a clean program so I do tip my hat to him for that.

"Cheating" to get ahead is much more acceptable in our society than it used to be...fans expect those in charge to do what "needs" to be done to be on the top...Kentucky/Duke/etc..would keep ticking...no matter what might happen to them and others...reload...move on...yaaaay Duke...

I'm guessing those programs will continue to be at the very top of the sport after the dust settles so why is not cheating good?

Some of this shit coming out, just shows how hard it would have been recruiting when everyone else is paying guys and Fran refused to.

I agree, deano. And honestly, it gives me a little different perspective on kirk. when you don't cheat, you're recruiting suffers. just the way it's been.

If I'm wrong about next season and we aren't in the NCAA Tournament I hope someone bumps this. If I'm right I will bump it.

And I'm not suggesting Fran is Jay. But I think Jay Wright is a very good coach. Yet he has only won 1 championship in 16 seasons. And in recent years he has lost early in The Tournament multiple times as a 1 or 2 seed.

Edit - And one more thing... That 2012 team had one senior that got didn't contribute anything.

This response from Gary was such bullshit it's not even funny. If Gary was so concerned about another school poaching his coach, then why didn't he make the buyout that another school would have to pay equal to the buyout the UofI would have to pay if it terminated him? But he didn't. The buyout another school would have to pay is around $2.5M and the buyout the UofI would have to pay is $10M+. The easy answer is that Gary could care less about another school poaching his coach, he just wants to tie his own hands with huge buyouts so he can spare himself the decision to terminate.
This. It’s why I don’t believe it — especially other P6 schools

Nobody cares about regular season accomplishments. That’s not why you coach and that’s not why you play the game
False. Without regular season accomplishments post-season chances diminish.

The priority of judging coaches is MM appearances and wins then regular season accomplishments.
