JUCO route?

Is this the route that our staff should be looking? Short term success can lead to long term success while short term stagnation doesn't lead to many good things.

Think they are going to have to now. Tyler Harris is the only offer left I believe. And he's not coming to Iowa, not from what he has been tweeting recently. St. John's (Steve Lavin) is going to get him.

We stil don't have a "big man" at 6'10"+, plus have two offers left in 2011 so I think they need to start looking at the JUCO level at this point.

Why did McCaffery pull Devin Coleman's offer again? I know he's not a big man but it's not like recruits are lining up to play for him? Definitely could have used him.

Another reason to go the juco route would be our lack of sophomores right now. We have only 2: Eric May and Cully Payne. If we get one or two jucos this year they would become part of this sophomore class (that is if they have 2 years of eligibility) which would provide some balance. Right now we have 1 senior, 5 juniors, 2 sophomores and 5 freshmen. (including walk-ons)

i follow Harris and he appears wide open to me. also, SJU has 2 commits at his position and just today ESPN insider said that they may get 2 more guard commits. there is no way they have room.

Iowa still has offers out to Eric Katenda and Trey McDonald for bigs. McDonald just visited WVU and used his other 2 visits for Wake and DePaul... hopefully Iowa can get him in on an official.

I wouldn't hold our collective breath for Harris, prying him from the East Coast is going to be extremely tough. Sounds like he will be attending Midnight Madness at Providence with Keno.

I wouldn't hold our collective breaths getting anybody decent enough to play in the Big Ten anytime soon.

You know, I've started to wonder if Fran will end up having to take some chances on some players.. (JUCO, ? Academics, etc.) I know we aren't to that point because the man hasn't even coached a game yet, and none of his players are even on campus- that's not waht I'm saying. We don't know yet what we will get the next couple of years - maybe it WILL work out. But if it doesn't, we might end up having to roll the dice on a couple of guys.

Not like we haven't had some good JUCO's in the past.. I think it's something worth keeping an eye on regardless.

Does anyone know of some jucos that we could go after?

I would keep your eyes open for two names. I know these two names have come across the Hawkeye staff's radar. Both have the ability to come in and make an immediate impact in the front court.

1) Jeremy Robinson (6-8/230) - Iowa Western CC

2) James Watson (6-8/220) - Cowley County CC

I wouldnt be againist A juco bigman. Big men take longer to develope so we'd get a year or two of expierience( to replace Cole),while we recruit the local big guys(Woodbury, ect) and get the schollies back in two years instead of having to develope a big right away for 4 or 5 years.

Jeremy Robinson
Was at Illinois State but transferred to Iowa Western.

James Watson
Was at Washington State but transferred for academic reasons.

Generally not in favor of JUCOs but I think Fran's going to need quick help to plug some of the holes and that may be the route to go. As you note, it also makes for a better mix of schollies right now.

robinson was real, real good in high school. played with lewjack at decatur eisenhower IIRC. he hear he has a heart condition that could end his career though.

If Iowa can plug a hole or two in the frontcourt, if they can't get either Katenda or McDonald on campus, then yes. If they get one of them, I say no to the JUCO route, unless there is a guy that gives Iowa everything they want (athleticism, size, shot-blocking). Big Ten ready freshman big guys are not that easy to find, unless they are exceptional or can provide a specific role from the bench.

I say that we need some patience...we have two recruits and the high school season has not even started. There are always some players that surface during the season that have been overlooked. We will be fine and Fran will only go the JUCO route if he sees one that has great potential.

I wonder if the staff is still considering Brennn Cougill. Personally I think he has some nice potential in some progams but is not likely a guy for any sort of up tempo game.
