Jon - What's The Raider Package?

I'm listening to your podcasts which are terrific & passes the time at work. You keep referring to Iowa running "The Raider package" on D and how it would have been interesting to see some of the past players play it. What exactly is it or what makes "The Raider Package"? Thanks.

Iowa plays with only three defensive linemen and all defenders are standing up.

IMO, which may be wrong, I think we're misusing the Raider package term this year.

Last year, the Raider package brought Nate Meier, Quinton Alston, and someone else off the bench in a 3-4 look. In addition to the personnel package, we started using the "stand around" look that has become popular in the NFL.

This year, it looks to me that we mostly use the "stand around" look, but without the personnel changes. Are we bringing an LB in while sending a DL to the bench?

I think Davis usually leaves the field for those and Spearman/Jewell takes his place.

Hayden had the tight ends stand up as his periscope on a submarine.
Just multiple periscopes on the defensive line.

Is there a rule against having a gopher who can dig under the ground to get a sack on the quarterback? I think I saw it in a movie once.

How does someone who is a fan of this program with 3000+ posts not know what the raider package is after a year and a half? Wow. Does someone need to ask what the stretch play is next?

^This is exactly the kind of response to a straightforward question that spawned The Coker Thread.

I pretty much had an idea but was seeking the X's & O`s of it. More specific detail for conversation. I knew I`d get blasted asking by some juvenile azz, but asked anyway.

It started out as a spy on mobile QB's. They couldn't get off the field on 3rd down because they couldn't keep the QB contained. Took out a D lineman and substituted another LB that could spy. What they found out is they can do a lot of things with that personnel group. They're able to blitz from many different places, they can drop back in zone, etc....It really came to life last year against NW. Instead of being shredded by Coulter, they really had him confused much of the day.

What is the stretch play? It seems like some weird run to the sideline behind the yard of scrimmage play the way Iowa runs it. How's it really supposed to work?
