How about the foul at the end of the Illinois game 2 years ago. I might have to think about it more to come up with more examples. It's weird how hard it is to think of basketball games during football season.

Sapp and MG were journeymen...like it or not...

We will be better...
I enjoyed watching Clemmons and Gesell, and they are good basketball players, but not great. I think both Williams and Bohannon are capable of bringing special abilities to the point guard position. Hopefully, it works out for them.

That's the only one I could think, not really sure it was bad defense since it was a contested shot but I'll give you credit for that one. Any other examples?

I'm drawing a blank. Other than Hayes hitting a big 3 towards the end of the Wisconsin game (can't remember who it was over) I can't think of the end of any game last year.

So how can you say Mike wasn't good defensively at the end of games if you remember one time Yogi hit a contested 3 on him?

It is nice to have two options that are so vastly different from each other. It will hopefully help to exploit mismatches. Maybe team likes to play zone so Bohannon gets more minutes to shoot 3s. Maybe a team plays Man but has a point guard who can't keep Williams from getting in the lane. Lots of options.

Because I remember remembering if that makes sense. Just can't remember specifics right now.

Mike and Sapp were very good defenders every minute they played. Sapp gave up a game winner last year too but he was still really good defensively.

Wow an entire year with no lapses huh?

No what I'm saying is they were both very good defenders all season. Sure they made mistakes but it's not like they were great for the first 38 minutes and then sucked the last 2 minutes. I've never heard anyone say Mike wasn't a good defender at the end of games until you just said it

So are you criticizing Izzo for not recruiting enough bigs?

I think Izzo will be just fine with his bigs this year. Bridges and Ward were both huge recruits and Goins I think will be solid for them. Plus they have some really good guards and that's more important than bigs in college basketball

That's because if you were ever going to talk about Mike in the last 2 minutes of a game, it will always be about his offense.

If he was a poor defender in the last 2 minutes of a game it would be discussed at length here. I mean people have piled it on him for 4 years so they're going to take any ammo they can get.

I won't go as far as to sat he is a poor defender late in games. He just has mental lapses in big moments. I think his brain shuts off in the last two minutes of games.

You really think Izzo, a coach who built his program on beating teams with rebounding and defense, will be fine with his 2 tallest players being 6'7" and 6'8" freshmen? He 'might' adapt. We'll see. I'm not putting it past him; there's a lot of talent 1-3. But it will mean fudging his philosophy maybe quite a bit, something he hasn't done in how many years?

I don't know about Izzo but I'd rather have a 6'7 freshman like Bridges than a 6'9 Schilling or 6'9 Carter out there. Bridges is a monster. Also Ward is 6'8 250 lbs plus was ranked better than 6'9 253 lbs Cook and I think we all feel good about Cook

The thing that frustrates me about guys like MG Sap and Woody is the lack in improvement in their games. MGs best season scoring was his freshman year. (not by much) He had more assists his senior yr but that was about it. Sapps numbers went up alittle but mostly due to more playing time not so much his game improving. Same with Woody. Rebounding was the only thing he got noticeably better at. Well he did improve his free throw shooting but he didn’t get there enough for it to matter… Now Jok he’s gotten a lot better. What Iowa needs are the middle of the pack guys to get better. The Uhls, Ellingsons, Wagners…. It just seems like most of the players at Iowa haven’t taken the incremental leaps in their games year to year during Frans time. That may or may not be completely fair but now that last yrs SR class is gone we’ll get a better sample size this yr and next of it..

Side note. Glen Worley I thought was the best example of a player that played 4 yrs and never even remotely got better. Gosh he frustrated me during his time… And I’m not even sure of what his numbers were off the top of my head but that’s the way I remembered him.

I think the two freshmen will do a good job, but its a long season and they are only freshmen. They don't have backup that would be very big. It will be interesting. I think I read where Ward has lost a lot of weight since getting to Michigan State so the season will probably be long for him.
