Jon - Recruiting Randle??

Perhaps because he is an extremely bright kid with a sky-is-the-limit academic future AND has mentioned that he especially is interested in studying medical technology, looking to a possible career in medical engineering.

And of the most prestigious programs in medical technology (U of Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins, Case-Mellon, Washington U-St Louis...) the U of Iowa is at the top of the list of those programs which are also serious Division 1 athletic programs...and easily the top choice among Midwest schools that play big-time basketball.

The U of Iowa has the largest teaching hospital IN THE WORLD. UIHC was one of the three sites of the landmark Genome Project. It is a huge facility in cancer research. It has billions of dollars worth of patents. It has embarked on a billion-dollar plus upgrading and expansion of UIHC that will increase its staff from a current 10,000 employee level to nearly double its staffing by 2016.

Perhaps none of this will matter in the end; it may well be that the kid in so enamored of running around in short pants bouncing a ball that he wants to extend adolescence into his 30s playing in the NBA: after all, that IS the choice of hoop stars who fall short of his rare combination of brains and athletic talent---OR he may follow the path of Bill Bradley et al and try to balance both, postponing (sometimes with fatal consequences) their post-sports careers. But it certainly is plausible to postulate that even if he hopes to pursue both futures he might decide that the U of Iowa Hawkeyes in combines great preparation for both..with the added advantage of being in his backyard.

The longer he waits to make his choice, most likely that is in Iowa's favor as he concludes that it is the best-suited to his academic interests and the Hawkeyes as a BT program would give him an opportunity to play college basketball at the highest level as well.

Aren't the U of I's medical advantages as a post-graduate as opposed to an undergrad? Randle could go anywhere he wants to as an undergrad and go to Iowa as a grad student if his NBA aspirations don't pan out. I'm not sure that it's a big recruiting tool.

I like the fact that Tigger thinks we have a shot.

Tigger is also one of my favorite posters in the history of Hawkeye message boards. He may be somewhat intransigient, and he doesn't care much for questions from the rabble, but when he has an opinion he always brings it strong; Tigger don't bring none o' that weak s**t into the paint. He always has something more than bare opinion to offer, and he always expresses himself very well.

Tigger, you da man (or woman).

It might help if Lick actually talked to him. Didn't Chasson say he "doesn't even know Lickliter".

And maybe Nellie is amongst the ex-players who don't like the direction the program is going so wouldn't be willing to call him.

I agree that if Lick wants to make a dent in the recruiting wars, he is simply going to have to actually meet the recruits he wants...sometimes I get the impression that Lick just rolls his eyes at all the other coaches chasing these teenagers around the country...like Izzo,Crean,Weber,Matta,Roy Williams..ect...it seems like he feels it is demeaning and gives the recruit the upper hand over the adult in the relationship.

Head coaches actually meeting with recruits? what a concept

Someone please tell me that Lick actually does meet with potential recruits. Please

It is a long long shot. If we are to have any shot at all I think we will need to win some games next year. Some kids do like to trailblaze a different path, maybe he is one of them.

Just working off of Rob Howe's comments on a Quad Cities radio station recently where Randle's recruitment was discussed. When Randle's quote that he did not know Lick, but did know Jordan was brought up, Howe commented that from what he can tell, Lick likes to have his assistants do the legwork on recruits and then lick himself comes in to present the scholly offer to the recruit.

Cannot really verify that is factual, but based on Randle's comments..could be true.

I thought I had read somewhere that while Randle said he doesn't have a firm timetable for his decision, he will probably decide before the start of his senior season. That wouldn't give us time to "make our case" on the court next season.

If I was Lick and the program was in the shape it's in now, and I wanted to keep my job, I'd be meeting with recruits in person. It just seems inexcusable that he isn't doing that. I mean, Randle said "I know McDermott" and mentioned other coaches that he knows but then said he doesn't even know Lickliter? That should be a wake up call to Lick to change his process.
