Jon, In the immortal words of Ricky Bobby.....

With all due respect Mr. Miller, I had no idea you had experimental surgery to have your balls removed! :D

After your argument on your show this morning about cold weather and football, it had to be said.

(Keep in mind, before you decide to ban me, I did say "With all due respect" :))

Mike Greenberg from Mike & Mike called and said Jon was being a little femine this morning.

Didn't hear the show, but IMO cold weather IS football weather. I do enjoy tailgating in shorts, flip flops and a t shirt but it's not nearly the gaming experience of bundling up in some gloves, stocking cap and cartharts to go outside and drink with a purpose (numb yourself from the cold) before heading into Kinnick with 70,000 other freezing fans bearing the elements to cheer on the Hawks. Man up Jon

I understand what Jon was saying......If you're on the national stage you want to showcase the talents of your two best teams in a controlled environment. I get that.

However, you never want to run away from your "brand". We're in the north. In the fall/winter, it snows, it's cold, often times weather will play a huge factor in the outcome. Why run away from that. It's who the Big 10 is. It's what we're known for. I didn't see fans run away from the cold in 2008 vs PSU or in 2009 vs PSU or in any other number of games. It's not like the Super Bowl where fans are going to come in a week early and take part in the party/festivities and you need some more cooperative weather.

I just think Jon underestimates fans' ability to deal with weather to follow their team.....especially to a championship game. Just because he's a wus doesn't mean the rest of us are! :)

that argument ain't worth a velvet painting of a whale and a dolphin gettin' it on.

The SEC doesn't play any of its games in indoor stadiums...except for the most important game of the year, their title game. That doesn't have anything to do with their 'brand'

The Big Ten plays football for two thirds of its season more often than not, above freezing...in fact, I am guessing more than 75% of its games are above the bad elements. Why in the world would you want your title game to have a strong chance of something like that being a part of the outcome?

Bingo. The B10 title game along with the UM-OSU game are the 2 marquis games nation wide. Why have weather be a determining factor on the title game if it can be avoided?

Because we're realistic Iowa fans and we know that Iowa is never going to have game changers on the outside like Charles Woodson, Ted Ginn, Braylon Edwards, Joey Galloway, David Boston, Desmond Howard, Cris Carter, Anthony Carter and Santonio Holmes. I assume Michigan will come back to normal strength and if we are in a one game shootout for the Rose Bowl or the national title game against OSU or UM, I'd much rather take my chances with old man winter instead of watching some total stud striking a Heisman pose in the endzone three times against us.

Furthermore, I understand that all of the prole hillbillies who live in flyover country just love Indianapolis because the strip malls remind them of home, but there is only one stadium in the midwest fitting of hosting such an event - Soldier Field, Chicago, IL. You guys aren't thinking strategically - you tell your old lady to pack up the family truckster, you roll into Chi-town, send Ma out to do the trading on Michigan Avenue with all the other tourist gals and you go to the ballgame. It's a two for one deal.

At the end of the day, if you want the game held indoors, I think we'd pretty much be stuck with alternating between Indy and Detroit. Both of those towns suck. Bad. Indy's just a big Neck Moines with a racetrack and a few more TGI Friday's, Crapplebee's and Red Lobsters and Detroit is, well Detroit is freaking Detroit. No thanks.

I would definitely think that it might help national recruiting also. If the best high school players from the warmer states (where most of the best recruits are) are watching the Big Ten Championship being played in snow then, they might not like that so much and would just make their decision not to play for a Big Ten school that much easier. Recruits know it will be colder if they play in the Big Ten but if they can see a championship game played inside they might not mind that so much. Its all mental:)

Eric Johnson talked about something like this today, why he favors a December signing period...southern schools dont like it, because they want kids to have to come to the Midwest in winter and see the weather, as that might help them.

With that theory we shouldn't play any game in less than stellar weather. Let's build domes for all of the Big Ten teams and play them in perfect weather. Also teams should not play any games above 85 degrees because we don't want an outcome that could be affected by the heat....Hey let's build perfect robots and play them on the couch..oh thats right we already have Madden. It's a human game, let them determine the outcome based on what is put before them. It's not like only one team has to play in cold weather. I am shocked by the amount of people who want to play the game on a rug. I guess at Penn State last year we should have waited until the rain stopped and we had a perfect track. I checked and found my man card....suggest others look again.

I understand the recruiting advantage angle on this. However, I must say that isn't playing in the elements what helps decide who the better team is? Football isn't about, "who the better team is when all the conditions are right". If that was the case then I would argue that every team would need to play the exact same offense's and defense's. After all, we want everything even, that way the "better team" will win without question. Being the better team is about adapting and overcoming or adjusting. Whether that be a running team having to adjust their playbook because the opponent is stacking the box or a passing team is faced with a dime defense all game, it's about adapting to the game and overcoming, whether it be strategy or climate.

Jon, I'm a little confused, in terms of weather what is the difference between Feb and Dec?

Big Ten Football is to be played outside.

Until I see realistic proof on how it could hurt the conference, play the game outside.

Seriously, the conference plays the tough card all season, then bails for a dome for the championship game?

I couldn't agree more. Football has always been an OUTDOOR game, to be played on GRASS. That's the way it has always been, and the way it should remain.

Iowa's new field is nice. Very catchy. Looks good in person and on TV, but it will never be real grass and that just plain sucks.

I don't agree with the recruiting aspect. If we have a chance at a prima donna from down south that is scared of the weather . . . I don't want them as a Hawk.

Plus, the weather adds to the drama and isn't that what draws TV viewers in?

But why play a game where weather can have a negative affect on the game?? If you can take weather out of the equation then you have a better opportunity to see the team that is truly better win.

Maybe we should play basketball outside in the snow, it might help our bball team have a better chance to win.

I have been apart of games (football and baseball) that have been decided by the weather. Playing baseball in the rain and seeing the ball sliipping out of hands, tripping around bases on wet fields etc.... In football not being able to throw the ball (on a team that threw predominantly), fumbles because of wet balls etc.... I agree that is part of the game but when you have the opportunity to take those factors out of the equation why not do it?????

This is just a one year deal with Indy. They will re-visit it when they have a chance to really assess the options.
I think this is fine for the 2011 game because Iowa will be an offensive team that year with a high-powered passing attack. Vandy throwing to Marvin McNutt,Keenan Davis and CJ Fed,along with all of our running backs, who will just be juniors? Awesome.
That attack will flourish better in perfect conditions. Our defense will be a bit more suspect, but could be fast, which works in the dome.
After 2011, I could see them going to Soldier Field...which will work for us as we get our big back offense featuring Coker, rolling.
