John Bohnenkamp just talked to Steve Forbes

I think the more likely possibility is Barta knows what he is doing and you don't.

which part of my post do you disagree with exactly?? You dont think we should contact Forbes if we know that Bruce isnt interested? A guy who is known as a great recruiter a native iowan and who calls Iowa his dream job is someone i would at least want to have a little chat with.

The fact that Tennessee is still playing ball now. It would be uncouth by Barta to go in now.

If we hire some flavor of the month HC from a mid-major who really hasn't accomplished much other than maybe make the NCAA tournament once in their short career then I will explode! I'm talking atom bomb level explosion!

If history has proven anything at Iowa it's proven that we need a recruiter to get the program headed in the right direction. 90% of the outcomes today's basketball games are already determined before the ball is thrown up based on your talent level.

Screw the mid-major route. Either pay Drew what he wants, bite the bullet and hire Gillispie and let it play itself out, make Pearl the highest paid coach in the Big10 or get Forbes. Outside of those four options, I don't see us heading in a different direction and we should have saved the $2.4 million.

Those are my four options at this point.

No offense, but none of those other coaches, other than Forbes, are going to come to this basketball version of Cherynobl. People act like if we just pay them a bunch of money, they'll just up and leave with no problem. Unless we're prepared to pay one of them enough money to be the highest paid coach in college basketball, they ain't coming.

In my original post I said that it would make sense if we were waiting on Bruce, so i understand your point. While I agree with you that it might be in pour taste to contact coaches while they are still playing i think we'd be naive to think it doesnt happen.

I love people who issue message board ultimatums. I hope you've let Barta know that he only has four possible options.

I've emailed Gary Barta and let him know my concerns on several occasions. I emailed him during the season, just prior to Lick being released, just prior to Lick being released and yesterday. I have no thoughts that my donations to the program have earned me the ability to tell the man how to do his job but I would like to think that my opinion counts a little. I have received a response to every email that I have sent - not that it matters. I've never once received confidential information or anything that would be construed as 'inside' information but the emails have contained information that let me know my concerns have been heard.

I still have confidence in Gary Barta doing the right thing when it comes to this hire. Some things I post on the forum are to humor me, others are to vent and others are to create a little pi$$ and vinegar between posters.

Enjoy.

First of all, I'd like to hear from Corbin09 as to whether it is a fact that there's been no contact with Forbes. Again, it could have been through Parker so that technically Forbes' answer might be accurate.

Assuming that what Forbes said is true in every sense, it appears to me that Barta is focused on head coaches and will not go the assistant route unless he strikes out with every viable HC candidate. The question is how he defines "viable." If he considers a low-major coach like the guys at Wright State and Murray State or even Boylen to be better candidates than a high quality assistant at a highly successful high major program, then I'd have issues with that.

We're talking to this Utah guy whose team just won 14 games last season. Didn't New Mexico win 30 in the same conference? So Alford outcoached this guy by 16 games and yet we think that he can turn it around where Alford didn't? I mean if literally no one would take the job then I understand, but when you have someone like Forbes out there who would take the job then what's your problem Barta? At least give the man an interview. Otherwise you're going to have a ****** off fanbase. If you bring in another mid-major hire and we don't make the NCAAs tourney within two years, the fanbase will against be calling for his head. But first they're going to be calling for Barta's head.

Were his responses sincere or were they similar to "yeah, yeah, whatever i have work to do."?

It's starting to look like Barta is either pulling off something much bigger and better, or he is completely and utterly dropping the ball on this hire.

No contact to Forbes or Barbee.. Yet we hear names like Jim Boylen and Wright State's coach... WTF.

subterfuge
1: deception by artifice or stratagem in order to conceal, escape, or evade
2: a deceptive device or stratagem

at least, that is what I hope is going on

I will bet you any amount of money that not only is he not negotiating with Drew but he hasn't contacted him either since Baylor IS STILL PLAYING.

It's professional courtesy to wait until a team's season is done before any contact is made even for assistants.

I'm sure this is part of the equation. There may have been preliminary inquiries, but professional courtesy says neither IOWA nor the coach should say anything publicly until his team is done playing.

Forbes (and others) may "know" that contact is forthcoming, but both parties are managing it appropriately until they can/should say more.

Agreed. I really wouldn't read too much into any of this.

I am sure there has been back channel communication with all coaches we are interested in, including Forbes. Nothing official will be done until said coaches teams finish their year.

I agree Ghost.

Listen guys, just because someone says they weren't contacted by IOWA, doesn't mean they haven't been contacted by the search firm. IOWA can't contact him without first getting permission and they aren't going to do that while Tennessee is still in the tourney. I can almost guarantee you, though, that the search firm has contacted him. This way he can say "Iowa hasn't contacted me" and still not be lying.

+ infinity. This is how it is done and why schools hire the search firm. Plausible deniability.

He has not contacted him in person...until Barta believes that Forbes is a big enough name this probably isn't gonna happen.

I am now in the camp of " what the hell is goin on!!!!!!!!!! "

Coaches with teams that are still in the postseason normally aren't going to want to be hassled by other colleges. I think Barta is smart enough to know this, and is forced to play the waiting game on those coaches... which is fine.

I hope you are correct. It's either this or a total and epic failure. BTW, check my Twitter post, I recommended you and several others be named to coaching staff...;)
