Jim Herrmann

I do like the idea of a LB coach with DC experience...in the big 10 is even more exciting. Would love to see some LBs like Greenway and Hodge again. When Norm was out recruiting he knew what to look for in LBs and Hermann should bring a lot of that back to Iowa. If this does fall through and Hermann is not the choice I'm still more then ready to just know already.

Man people are nitpicky around here lately. We need a thread with some positive vibes. A koombaya thread.

People are concerned that our Jim H. may not be able to coach against the spread in college. I'm pretty sure he has spent the last few years with a pretty good defensive football team game planning against some of the best athletes and schemes you will find. I think he can figure out a way to stop Minnesota and Indiana running the spread.

I like the hire honestly. For some of us who wanted to see a more aggressive scheme on 3rd down, I believe we will get this. I also like the fact that he coached the LB's...right now, I would call that the strength of our defense and we have athletes there. Hitchens and Kirksey are going to be special. i would love to see a three man line and send a LB on third and medium. I like the hire.

I can't imagine HR approving of hiring anyone from Penn State as fluid as that situation is. All it would take is one person claiming Bradley knew something about the Sandusky stuff and there would be a firestorm in IC. From all accounts Bradley is a quality guy, but seriously folks, Happy Valley is like Iowa City, do you really think other members of the staff were oblivious to what had been going on?

I find this situation really odd. Is Ferentz really going to be able to keep this hire a secret right up until his press conference tomorrow? It seems that nearly 100% of the time there is a sports related press conference we know the news before it's actually announced. The only speculation we have is from an incoming recruits FaceBook page. Not exactly concrete info. I'll be stunned if we don't know who the hire is before the end of the day today.

Agreed. In most cases, the news is leaked and the press conference is to introduce the new coach. I'm not sure I understand why this is being treated like a matter of national security. No football teams are currently playing and recruiting is over so why this is being kept under such tight wraps? At this point, they must have an agreement in place so what purpose does it serve?

This makes me wonder if the candidate is, in fact, Tom Bradley. If it is, you might understand the secrecy since it'll spare him the pitch-fork wielding maniacs that will show up at the press conference. It'll keep the news cycle as short as possible.

Yeah...as quite as this has been (even on pay boards where people usually have inside sources), it leads me to believe it isn't Herrmann....if it were Herrmann, you'd think we'd have to hear something from the Giants side very soon.

Bradley you could keep quiet because he is currently unemployed, however, I'm starting to doubt that it is him either.

With as quiet as it has been, I'm starting to believe that the most likely options, in this order, are:

1.) Phil Parker is the hire
2.) KF will announce LeVar Woods as the DL coach tomorrow, but note that he HASN'T hired a DC yet.
3.) Tom Bradley is the hire
4.) Jim Herrmann is the hire.

It just seems too quiet for me to believe Herrmann is the guy, unless we hear something about him very soon.

The only reason I still think Herrmann is a possibility is due to his current situation. You don't want anything to come out before the Super Bowl that could be a slight distraction to his team and now possibly you just want to let him fully enjoy the parade and all of the celebration that goes on with winning a Super Bowl. It's quite the accomplishment, so he should enjoy it a bit. Recruiting is over, the team isn't practicing, so it's not the end of the world to let the guy enjoy the victory.

Excuse my ignorance on this topic....What is the connections between KF/Iowa and Jim Herrmann?

Ferentz is very good friends with Llyod Carr from Michigan. Herrmann was Carr's defensive coordinator for an extended period of time. Just connecting the dots.

If it is truely Parker who gets hired then KF flat out ****** this hire down his leg.

How on earth can you make that conclusion right now? Everyone said not having a DC was going to hurt recruiting... and guess what? It didn't hurt recruiting. By most measures, Iowa had one of its best classes of the KF era.

If KF hires Phil Parker and our defense sucks for the next several years, then fine, it was a bad hire. But we don't know that yet-- he could be Norm 2.0. The idea that Iowa had to rush out to replace a guy who'd been on staff for 13 years is ridiculous to me. What on earth was the rush? Maybe KF talked to/interviewed some guys and decided on the basis of that that PP was the guy for the job all along. I'd rather have a coach take their time with a decision of this magnitude than to get someone in right away just to satiate the message board masses.

Parker was pretty much the DC the entire 2010 year and had tons of NFL talent on that team and flat out didn't get the job done at all...would hate to see how bad it would have been without all the NFL talent on that team.
