Jestin Jacobs Sticks with Iowa, Turns Down Home-State Buckeyes

I feel like we probably got lucky with the timing of Meyer stepping down but credit to the coaching staff for being in early and developing the relationship and keeping the commitment.

For the record, I wrote this story on Wednesday morning when he told me he was sticking with Iowa. While it was nice to see KF, Parker and Wallace visit him last night, and I'm sure the family appreciated it, his mind already was made up before they stopped at his house last night.

High integrity shown be Jacobs for sticking with his original choice. Conversely, incredible stupidity shown by KayRon Adams for not seeing the opportunity that Iowa provided for him.

Am I doing it right?

Seriously, much respect to both of these young men for honoring a commitment. Hopefully they both have great college experiences.

I wonder how they will use him? He looks like a terror attacking the QB. Time to start thinking 3-3-5?

Please no. It's the choice of th Big 12 for a reason.

Plus the thought of less than four down lineman disgusts me personally.

Really? I always liked the 3-4 front. I thought it was always tricky to prepare for. A few teams still run it but its going out of style in the NFL and is nearly nonexistent in college.

Situational?

I was kinda kidding. I just prefer the 4-3/4-2-5 because that's all I've ever played in and all Iowa's ever run. Though Dom Capers did kinda ruin the 3-4 for me.

I do think it's got its place it certain situations, but our pass rush is good enough that I think all 4 need to stay on the field during pass situations.

The 3-4 is not going out of style in the NFL.

Wut?

5 of the top 10 ranked NFL defenses run it (one of those is a hybrid, so maybe 4.5)

Tons of teams run the 3-4 in NCAA ball.

About 10 teams use it. Maybe going out of style was a poor choice of words. But NFL wide the use of 5 DBs is over 50% of the snaps. Looks more like a 3-3-5 than a traditional 3-4. But than again I'm not a coach. I do watch GB, Pittsburgh, and Baltimore quite a bit and they are about as married to the 3-4 as anyone and they still use 5 DBs far more than they don't.

Got to give the young guy a heck of a lot of credit for reevaluating everything and sticking with his commitment and gut feeling. That will go a long way going forward at Iowa. Looks to have a good head on his shoulders. Can't wait to see him perform.

I agree with that. NFL is such a passing league you’re going to have your nickel corner out there on most downs. It’s like this other thread that was started claiming Iowa is a 4-2-5 now. It’s simply about matching up personnel with your opponent, not exactly rocket science IMO.

Well this is a nice Xmas present. It felt like he was going to flip for awhile there. Glad to hear he'll still be a Hawk. I wonder if he just saw what Justin Hilliards journey has been and figured Iowa may be just a better fit for his overall future.

Situational?

I think this. Watching Martinez from Nebraska scrambling around with A. Nelson and AJE trying to contain him scared me to death. For certain teams and certain situations, I would definitely like to see some of those spare (and fresh-legged) LBs put to use.
