Jerminic Smith Leaving Team

J. Smith did show a few flashes of being a solid college WR but the key word there is few. It was disappointing that he wasn't able to emerge after Vandeburg's injury after somewhat capably filling in for T. Smith the year before. I would have liked to have thought that J. Smith could possibly have a bounce back Junior year, but I certainly wouldn't have counted on it. When I think of the WR's that have played well at Iowa in the past decade or so, I feel like you can kind of tell pretty early on when they play if they'll be solid contributors. This hurts from an experience and depth standpoint, but maybe someone like Devonte Young, Nick Easley, or our new favorite WR Brandon Smith can step up and take the spot.

Flash would be the right term...it's rare, it happens so quickly that you're not sure what you saw, and it's not sustainable. Wish the kid well, he's a young man. But he didn't seem to have what it took.

I feel bad for this young man. But, I am confident that the coaching staff gave him every opportunity to be successful and gave him every opportunity to develop. That is what we do at Iowa. It did not work out for JS. Best of luck in the future. Sometimes, a new environment and some maturity can lead to success.

The truth seems to always be the first casualty when a relationship ends that goes public and whether that relationship is one of love or employment etc, etc.

There also seems to be the obligatory - "it was a mutual agreement" and said in a myriad of ways. Well sorry Spanky but one party was holding Thor's hammer and dropped it or threatened to.

I seriously doubt that the two parties involved in a "breakup" ever initiated "the talk" at the exact same time. Somebody had to go first.

so the kid wasn't cutting it, academically or football-wise.... but Kirk took the high road and didn't trash him. Sounds fine to me.

How do we know how good he would be? We threw the ball to him 50 times. In 13 games. That is 3.8 passes to him a game.
Texas Tech and TCU wanted him. So Im thinking the guy can catch a ball and run with it.

This is unacceptable. If he was struggling academically, get him help.

This is KF dumping another player he doesnt like. But could help us. And would stick around anopther program because he would help. KF takes it personally.

Only 9 more years to go.

You are so full of shit I don't know where to begin.

He caught 23 passes last year and should have caught 46. But he dropped every other ball thrown to him.
And then, to top it all off, he decides he's not interested in academia.
And that's not going to fly under KF's watch.

Okay, I looked it up. And Kliff Kingsbury was an assistant at Houston when James Cleveland transferred there. Since then two more Hawks have transferred to play for him at Tech. They should just name a scholarship down there for Ferentz. The Kirk and Mary Ferentz frustrated offensive skill player Endowed Sholarship spot reserved for former Hawekeyes.

They do give the players academic help. Lots of it. But ultimately the student-athlete still needs to go to class and do their work, Iowa doesn't hand out fake degrees to athletes.

And I don't think Smith is "another player [KF] doesn't like." He was liked well enough to play as a true freshman. He was liked well enough to start last year. As a person, I think he is a pretty likable young man. You still need to do your work, though.

This is kind of ridiculous. The football players get more help than any student on campus. From things I've heard they have kept many, many kids who would otherwise struggle academically both qualified and get them graduated.
If a kid can't take advantage of the massive advantages that are placed in front of them, I think you should probably look at them first and ask why it is they aren't taking advantage of the opportunity that they have.

So we'll have a sophomore QB with a bunch of freshman WR's with a few upperclassmen sprinkled in??? Sounds like a potentially exciting future!!

What if Vandeburg doesn't come back 100% healthy?
I honestly hope most of us fans don't count on him being back at 100%. As much as we need him to I wouldn't hold my breath that he'll be able to. Feet injuries are tricky and once it's been reinjured... It's not like a knee or tendon recovery at all in that the time table for them getting healthy is pretty cut and dry. Even though his foot may be all good to go all it takes is planting it at just the wrong angle with the right amount of torque and it's out again. I almost feel as though anything he's able to do again on the field for us will be a bonus. I hate saying that cause he's pretty much the 2nd best player on the offense...

Knee injuries cut and dry? Once a knee is compromised it is never the same. Repeat and more extensive damage is a big risk. The mental recovery is very hard.

Both the knee and foot do suffer to recovery from lack of blood flow. Something that damages tissue in the knee likely damages the meniscus. A menuscus as little chance of healing.

The thing with a developmental program is that in most instances the payoff comes when these guys are upperclassmen.

One would hope that J Smith's best football was ahead of him after two years of developing in the program. That's why attrition, as a rule, isn't good in a program like ours.

In Tevaun Smith's first two seasons, he caught 27 passes for 341 yards and one touchdown. He caught three balls his true freshman season and 24 as a sophomore.

As a true freshman, Jerminic Smith caught six balls and then 23 last year. His 29 receptions went for 455 yards and two scores over the two years.

Tevaun went on to catch 75 balls for 1,159 yards and six TDS. He spent last season in the NFL.

I'm not saying J Smith would have matched T. Smith's output the next two seasons. We don't know what would have happened.

But, again, the idea is for guys to improve mentally and physically as they get older in our program. Attrition usually isn't a good thing, especially at a position that's seen a lot of it this decade.

He had 1-2 games in which he tantalized us with some flashes of talent but the light bulb just wasn't coming on for this kid. I wish him the best though.

Texas Tech is having trouble keeping WRs themselves. Their #1 WR from last season is transferring. 2 others have left as well. One kid is retiring and another looking for another school. It even happens at schools with fancy offenses
