Jay Bilas, one of the most respected analysts on college hoops showers praise on Basabe in a recent article on Hawk Central. Bilas was really impressed with Melsohn's first game against OSU and Sullinger.....

Jay Bilas was watching on the Big Ten Network when Iowa freshman Melsahn Basabe stuffed the stat sheet in a 73-68 loss to No. 2 Ohio State on Jan. 4, 2011.
Basabe had 22 points, 13 rebounds and six blocked shots in that game. Three of those rejections were on shots put up by heralded Buckeye freshman Jared Sullinger, who finished with 24 points and 12 rebounds.
“It was ridiculous,” Bilas, a former Duke star and current ESPN college basketball analyst, said of Basabe’s effort that night. “He was phenomenal. He’s got ability. And he kept doing it (all season). It wasn’t just a one-time deal. I was really impressed with him.”

He also expects the Hawks to be competitive this year and likes their recruiting for 2012. High praise from Bilas.

“(Point guard) Bryce Cartwright is really good, and Matt Gatens is back,” Bilas said. “They’ve got some pieces there to be a lot more competitive. And they’re making a splash in the recruiting area, which is a big deal.”

Funny how when an analysts says something good about an iowa player they are "one of the most respected guys in the business" but when they say something negative they are terrible and a joke and a homer or something

"good read"
"he really did his homework"
""i've always liked him"

In the industry, Jay Bilas is highly respected, and among college basketball fans who know anything at all about the game, he is highly respected.

:)

It's also funny when someone makes a stupid comment trying to call out the OP when it has nothing to do with the topic...crap now I'm doing it

Who is this "Jay Bilas" guy? He sounds like a real tool who doesn't know what he's talking about and has a long way to go if he ever wants to be half the man Pat Forde is...

Better?:D

I know Bilas is well respected and i think he is one of the best guys out there. I just find it funny if he would have "Basabe really disappeared at times last year and never passed. I see him hitting a sophomore slump since he wont sneak up on teams anymore" this board would blow up with "Stupid dookie "ACC homer" "probably never seen Iowa play"

Anyway i didnt mean to derail the thread and i find it awesome that Frans efforts are getting noticed !

I have never liked Bilas, how dare he say anything good about the Hawks. He is a tool and I am shocked ESPN keeps paying this guy.

There, feel better?

You are spot on. There is a large portion of the message board that exists only to say things like "I love Iowa!"

There is also a portion that take any positives toward the Hawks and try to make it into something less.

JB is respected and this is a positive in all things Iowa.

In the end does it mean anything, no. However it is nice seeing Iowa players talked about in a way that is positive.

If there is no devil's advocate there is no basketball message board here. Obviously everyone is an Iowa fan who posts here with any regularity.

After all the negative publicity during the Lick years, it is very nice to get some positive press, especially from someone of Bilas' stature. There are those of us who view the upcoming season with eager anticipation and will enjoy watching the games, actively supporting the team and then there are those who view the upcoming season with dread and probably will nitpick the team to death on a constant basis. To each his own. Can't wait for the season to start.

There's a difference between playing devil's advocate and being a contrarian...if Bilas had said something negative about Iowa, sure people would probably be disappointed in him and some would blast him for it...but then again, there'd also be those who would say "If he had said something good, you'd all be talking about how great he is"...damned if you do, damned if you don't...
