James Morris - poised for big things?

Everything I have read, seen, heard about this guy is nothing short of terrific.

Getting reps at the MIKE LB as a true frosh speaks volumes to me.

Anyone have thoughts on how good James could be? Seems to have the athletic ability, but also has a terrific head on his shoulders.

My prediction ... YES.

From some of what I've heard, he's already near the 230 neighborhood size-wise ... and he's a kid who can run and stick with RBs in coverage. From what the BTN showed, he has pretty darn good instincts.

At the very least he's going to see PLENTY of action on special teams. However, I also think that we'll see him get plenty of reps in clean-up duty early in the season when we have blow-outs. After all, the flip side to Tarp being injured is that it looks like Morris has been seeing more reps with the #2s at the MIKE LB spot.

The bigger question in my mind is at what spot he'll be playing in the future. It appears that Bruce Davis has been practicing a lot with the #1s. Thus, if Bruce starts in 2011 at the MIKE spot ... then where will Morris play? Back at the WILL spot, maybe?

I think he'll end up at the Will or Leo spots. I just think w/ his athleticism he's too gifted to play Mike, strange as that may sound.

This is great news about James Morris! Always impressed when a lineman or linebacker can play as a true freshman, especially a small town Iowa kid. He's won 41 straight football games, good karma to have him play this year too.

I've met the kid a time or two and know some of his family members. He seems like a really great kid. Well spoken, humble, smart. It'll be fun to watch his progress.

with the LB's this year pretty well set to start the year, barring injuries or a drop off in play, I would think a redshirt year should be in line for Morris. I would hate to kill a year of eligibility just being a kamikaze on the kickoff team, and maybe some spot roles throughout the year. If he were to redshirt this year, he will contend for the WILL next year, then 3 more years starting at either of the three spots. This year should be a "use if a must" year for Morris if you ask me. Tarp and Davis will suffice at MIKE.

it will be interesting to see how the redshirts get used on this class. i think KF is trending away from using it a lot. i don't think JM will get redshirted, but you make a good case for it.

I see Morris playing the LEO or the Mike. Kirksey is our prototypical WILL. I see him stepping into the role pretty quickly.

I think it is going to be between Poggi and Morris for the LEO and MIKE spots at some point.

Not sure if Bruce is going to be able to hold off Morris. This kid is REALLY special.
