Jack Trice was Awesome

I talked with my brother last night. He usually attends games at Kinnick, and he said he couldn't believe how little the football knowledge was at Half-Price Stadium (yet, he could believe it). He also said that he heard an Iowa fan refer to ISU as little brother, and they pulled out the enrollment card. Also, he sat behind a Clown that yelled at the refs every single play that wasn't a big gain for ISU or a short gain/loss for Iowa. Another Clown fan also yelled that he was expecting another letter of apology from the NCAA about how bad the refs were. My brother said that he hadn't been to Half-Price Stadium for several years, but was glad to see nothing had changed.
Same thing in basketball. If it was bad for their team, it must have been cheating. The fans I sat around were good sports for the most part, but damn if that isn't the least sports-intelligent fanbase in the country.

I've said this before but my wife can't stand Iowa fans because of the online persona of some people. There were tons of Iowa fans at the game, in the lots, etc. We tailgated with them and had a ball. I had pretty much the same experience in IC myself. There were one or two total jerks in IC which just made me not want to go back and I'm sure some people maybe even on this board have had the same experience in Ames, which is honestly too bad because it can be a lot of fun.
A few years back I was at an Isu vs. Big 12 team game. I wore a denim shirt that had the Iowa logo on it, but it was suppose to be chilly that day and I wore a plain sweater over it. Turns out the weather was really warm and I had to take the sweater off. At half time I went to get a drink at the concession stand and some ISU guy who was a pretty big dude throws his shoulder into me and said something like "Iowa sucks." I was pretty taken back by his behavior and that fact he had to shove me like that.

Remember two years ago when Iowa won at Madison? Some Iowa teenager got sucker punched by a grown male Badger fan outside the stadium after the game. Best part after he hit the kid in the face he ran off like a gutless coward. The police report read.....The suspect was a white male, late 20's/early30's wearing a red shirt. Yeah, that narrows it down to about 50,000 people!

I think for the most part, that's the way it is. There are plenty of nice people at both sites. But having traveled to many road games over the years...I have to be honest. The jerk factor in Ames is second only to Madision (where the drunken ahole factor is huge)...but it has improved dramatically in recent years. @ Arizona in 2010 was far and away the worst thing I've ever seen. That was unbelievable.

Those that step out of line in Iowa City are usually policed by other Hawk fans telling them to cut the crap. I've seen some pretty intense discussions between Iowa fans telling the drunken jerk Iowa fan to shut it down or get the hell out.

I second that statement about the Arizona game. Even the vendors in the stadium were crazy, one guy threatened to "cut" an Iowa fan sitting behind us. My wife and I were like WTF is happening. We wanted to hand out after the game, but I'm not sure it would have been safe to do so.

When I think if Arizona I think of old duffers, not hoodlums. I guess those old fans out there can be pretty dicey!

So you're saying that the fans in person are the complete opposite of their fans online? I think I would like ISU fans a lot more if I didn't come across them online. They are basically insufferably arrogant when it comes to basketball, and insufferably obnoxious when it comes to football.

LOL! Just look at any online news story that allows comments to be posted. Most times the comments are more interesting than the story itself.

Agree. Was there and never been heckled (not good naturedly) more than at Arizona.

I attended the Iowa State game, and it was the first time I've been at Jack Trice since 2005. Some observations:

1. Iowa State has one of the best bands in college football. Seriously.
2. The stadium is LOUD and the Iowa State fans really support their team. It compared favorably to most of the Big Ten venues. The improvements to the stadium give it a big time feel.
3. The Iowa State fans we sat with couldn't have been nicer. There was some good-natured ribbing but it was fun to be with them.
4. The Iowa State team looked well-coached and their offense was terrific. They have a physical, high-powered offensive scheme.
5. Iowa played with great poise and pulled it out because of their playmakers on offense.
6. There is no reason why Iowa State cannot win 6 games and go to a bowl. They have the talent to do it. I also expect Iowa to have a good season and go bowling as well.

It is an intense rivalry, but I think the game prepares Iowa well for its Big Ten schedule.

Like the room around the concession area when warm out but I bet that is a cold son of a gun with a stiff northwest wind in November. Only time I like being cramped in at Kinnick is when its cold.

Also they need to dump the 1970s era press box and build something more modern and also time to get rid of that building in the north end zone. It just looks weird and odd there.

Been going to the game in Ames since 2007 game. Never had a bad experience with the fans there. As stated most tailgates have a mix of Iowa and ISU fans. And I would bet even at the ones which were all ISU fans if an Iowa fan walked up and asked if they had an extra beer or sandwich they would say sure. Now if you go walking into Cy's Roost on Welch with your Iowa gear, what the heck do you expect to get for reception. Just avoid the drunken kiddies at both locations.

#2 The stadium is loud because of the stupid piped in music and 1000 decibles.
#4 and #5 makes it seem like only people at the game have this information.

I'm glad their stadium has improved. It will be the crown Jewell of the MAC when OK and TX bolt from the league.

Pollard has said they have plans to do something on the north side too. That'd probably be 2020 or later though. They are expanding parking and resurfacing, and putting a pedestrian bridge over University in 2018-19 which is badly needed as well.

I agree the press box needs updated badly but that's clearly not priority #1.

As I stated in a different thread, ISU's talent, man 1-22, is pretty darn good. Campos, Good-Jones, Lazard, Butler, Montgomery, Park, Spears, and Cotton-Moya would start for most high quality P5 teams. And their specialists are pretty good.

Last year, they led Okie State and Baylor by double digits in the 4th. Gave Oklahoma and K-State all they could handle. And beat the snot out of Texas Tech. So they've got talent.

Their problem is their reserves....they just don't have any depth. So when injuries mount or when they need to sub, the dropoff right now is pretty steep.

Why does your last paragraph sound so familiar???

I agree with your summations. If they continue this upward trajectory they could return to Earl Bruce level ISU football. They would then have to pay out some bucks to keep their coach. The million dollar question (no pun intended) is will they finally pony up and do that?

I wonder if they can even afford to. With all of the debt payments they have on the facilities upgrades they did, I wonder if they have the $3+ million necessary to attract/keep a high quality coach....

Good point! Seems nonsensical to spend all that money and not be able to afford a good coach.

I went to Penn State last year and it was the best away crowd I've ever seen. The people were so hospitable it would make your head spin. I literally could have drank all the beer and eaten all the food I wanted without paying a dime; I can't tell you how much of it I had to turn down. People wanted pictures, the whole ball of wax. If it wasn't for the whole rapey thing going on I would have thought it was the best experience outside of Kinnick I've ever had.

I will say this - Trice looks more like a real college football stadium now. The freeway signage structure at the other end isn't good, but it's what I would expect from an engineering school.

Another thing about the stadium in Ames is all the people they allow to roam the sidelines and endzones. Whats the deal? I swear do they hand out hundreds of sideline passes?

I remember when I had my first Nattie Light ;)
