Jack Hoiberg To Walk On At Michigan State.

IMO kids do that to get the experience of playing under a great coach to bolster a potential coaching resume.

I don't think a program like Mich St. or coach Izzo's going to just take a walk-on to better the said walk on's coaching resume if the walk on isn't going to really help his team. He's not in it for charitable reasons. The players has to potentially help his team in his eyes. This is a major D1 program going after a national title. He's not going to do a "favor" or bring a guy in just to give him experience unless he gets a benefit out the player.

I dunno....He brought the Dakich kid aboard, and he has hardly been a contributor. Izzo gets enough top grade talent that he can afford to "waste" a spot for a friend.

I don't think Bryce was talking about the kid's basketball ability. He was just saying a kid with coaching aspirations and no chance of playing is more apt to go walk on and play for a hall of fame coach than a crappy one like Iowa State's, given the chance.

That may be, but I'm saying I don't think Izzo would give a kid a chance or walk on opportunity unless he thought the player worthy of skill wise or if would help his team. Izzo's not going to accept a walk-on with limited skills or size, just to do the kid a favor to get him close to the program for coaching experience.

I'm sure he's good enough to play on the scout team or something. That, and he gets groomed under Izzo to get a good future reference.

Oh yeah no chance of that. I thought you thought Bryce was saying that.

cyfans have to be real losers when their favorite son has a son who's walk-on decides to take a dump on ISU and attend Mich. State. Thanks for the laugh Jack. Time for cyfans to say they didn't want him.

Right! ISU fans have to be beside themselves. What does this mean for Hoiberg ever returning to ISU? Worst yet, Does this open the door for Hoiberg possibly taking the reigns of MSU from Izzo? I will flat out lose my mind if that happens. Worst F'ing thing I could think of. Then ISU fans could take joy in every time MSU wipes our asses in the B1G. Please God, let Izzo be like his mentor and that he has groomed some assistant to eventually take over. Heathcote style.

That's exactly what I meant. Not good enough to get a scholarship anywhere, good enough to impact the scout team, good enough to get a reference.

Hopefully, there is an impact player coming into the conference next year with the name of Jack, but I don't think it will be a Hoiberg.

He didn't get his dads height. Only 5-9. Had a scholly to go play golf and is turning that down to spend his dads money to go pay out of state tuition. If I did that my Dad would have told me to have fun paying your student loans and then I'd have been on the phone getting my scholly back. I mean really? Does he think he'll have a better shot at the NBA as a 5'9 white boy or cashing checks on the PGA tour down the road? Both are pretty long shots but if your offered a golf scholly you must have a bit of a head start that most sure don't..

Maybe a bit harsh. It's college man. Kids are supposed to pursue their dreams lol this might be their only chance. Either way I'm sure MSU has a golf team as well. His Dad makes millions. I'm sure Freddie didn't bat and eye at the 50K a year tuition. Good news is there is no clock on a golf career. Guys play up until they can't walk or swing anymore. It's not like other sports where at 35 you are over the hill.

If that's the case why not have the best of both worlds and take the golf scholly and still walk on the hoops team? I really don't subscribe to the because his old man has millions that he's either obligated to pay or his kid is entitled to it. It's too bad society feels that way. Maybe more of those kids would be in a better place if they actually had to 'earn' their own way. But that's neither here nor there. Besides he may actually get to play if he went to a Dakota school instead of MSU...

I don't see it as entitlement. Most rich people choose to spoil their children. Why shouldn't they? What else is being rich for if not to spoil yourself and your loved ones? Some of the spoiled rich kids turn out fine and some don't (same odds as the poor or middle class). People are people with independent thought and action. There is no formula to guarantee the actions or thoughts of any large scale variance of humans. Your perspective of the scenario at hand is an individual and unique perspective crafted by the quantum computer we call a brain. It is unique because noone else's computer has ever had to process the exact same stream of data that you have experienced through your years of life. It is much harder to produce the same equation without the same set of data to work with. Therefore I conclude that judging the decision making of other humans is futile and it is much more effective to analyze the multitude of counter perspectives to my own whether I believe them to be accurate or not. Then I like to discuss them with other people to incubate a discussion of even further perspectives. Just so you understand my intentions lol.

I think some kids that are raised in that environment would sure look at it that way. I worded that the way I did from the parents angle of it possibly being an obligation and the kids side of looking at it both could be true or not. I sure don't know them personally so I'm guessing as much as anyone else that doesn't know them. They may be the most down to earth grounded wealthy family out there. I have no clue. And don't get me wrong I don't begrudge anyone that has money (especially those that earned it) in how they choose to spend it. I don't want people telling me how to spend mine. I was just speaking to the thought process of which those in that situation may be thinking. Being from as middle class as a middle class family could be I know how my Dad would react to turning down any kind of scholarship that's all I was saying.
Take the McCafferys with their situation. If there's no scholarship for CM I don't feel Fran is obligated to pay for his kid coming. CM could get a student loan for the one year. Some would say that's crazy and most wouldn't do that. I'm not even saying I'd do that I'm just pointing out it's another way of handling it.

Agree. Golf is the perfect sport that one can pursue after taking a shot at another sport where youth is on your side. Heck, he can try the golf deal later.
