I've had enough of this experiment

I think Woody has improved. I just wish he had more weight on his frame.

disagree.
He is painful to watch.
Slow & clumsy. Poster boy for what is wrong with Iowa Basketball.
Big & slow. Poor shooters. Quite a combination, huh?

Recruiting is so pivotal for any kind of development in a program.

These players need to get better overall if you want to hang with the big boys.

It would not hurt if Iowa got some of these players with one year of eligibility. Sometimes you need to take that chance.

Uhl, Ellingson & Dickerson need some maturation, but are forced to play because our team does not have strong players after the ISU game.

We've got Hutton, Fleming, Moss & Wagner for 2015 recruits in the fold along with who is returning.

We need to better overall.

Gesell and Woodbury are tapped out athletically. Gessell is maximizing what he has but cannot shoot the three nor consistently finish. Shooting the three is the one thing he can improve but has not. The best part of his game is the pull up mid range shot. Woody has short arms and cannot jump. No amount of work can over come this.

Play Uhl, Jok, Dickerson and Ellenson a lot this year to see what they can bring and get them ready for next year. Then Hutton, Moss, Fleming and Wagner need to be on the floor immediately and a lot. Do not pull a Ferentz and play guys with seniority only next year. Death sentence.

What has been proven multiple times the last 2 seasons is there are some guys in that starting line up that are not mentally tough. They simply quit when the going gets tough.

Nine minutes without a field goal, getting out rebounded by a smaller team and an over all lack of athleticism will not win games against teams like ISU.

A major need for Iowa is better players.

It is safe to say Frans future depends on landing and developing upper major conference level talent.

For a second, I thought I was back on the football forum....wink.

Folks, I know it's frustrating to lose like we did. However, please keep in mind that Iowa was complete and utter laughable $h!t when Alford saw the writing on the wall and the dark years of Lick set in. North Carolina isn't laughing. Iowa has still made a stark turnaround from where we were a short time ago.

We will still play well throughout the year and win games. I'm not arguing that I wouldn't love to see more athleticism and talent etc. etc. But would you rather we had little Lick back? Trade Kurt Looby for Woody? JR Angle -- should we get that chant going again?

I know what you mean but is that not obvious? Talent wins, always has, always will.

Somewhere along the way in football and basketball we got into this notion of developing guys who most power 5 schools did not want. Yes a few guys panned out but when you fill entire rosters in that matter you have problems.

Yes, there is poor coaching of talent but boy are your odds a lot better when you stock pile true talent.

The real question is what are the factors that are preventing our coaches from procuring better players? This is 2 different coaches in 2 marquee sports that are struggling to bring in talent. What is the commonality?

Basabe never really got better after a strong freshman season. He was a Fran guy from day 1. I think he was athletic.

Gessel and Woobury were big gets. Gessel isn't getting better. Woodbury has improved but still isn't where I thought he'd be.

Maybe Mike & Woody's ceiling just isn't as high as we thought it was when they committed. 4* players, yes, but from Sioux City/South Sioux City. What kind of competition were these two playing against? Get a 4* player out of Illinois. Michigan, NYC, etc. and it could be a different story. I'm starting to think that both of these guys were simply overrated. Solid players, absolutely. But not Top 100 material at this point, when you compare to the talent of Top 25 programs.

It's painfully obvious that ISU is simply out-recruiting Iowa. They have FAR better talent, and Fred seems to be reloading every year. Frankly, I'm sick of it. Fran is definitely an upgrade over Lick (that's not saying much, though, is it?) but I'm starting to think he has taken us as far as he can, barring a sudden and drastic improvement on the recruiting trail. I can't remember the last time Iowa had a team that could actually shoot. Maybe Alford's 25 win team in 2005-06?

It's time for IOWA to get coaches who can recruit. That's where it all starts. Gotta get players. Not holding my breath, though.

Yeah, at least it isn't the Lick years anymore. Great! I'm looking forward to another NIT berth.

Guys, ISU is going to beat everyone up to maybe Duke, Kentucky, Arizona, when they shoot like that. They had a guy 0-9 make 4 or 5 threes last night. Their night...great game plan...kudos.

Chances are the guys they sat last night...don't play that well. The disturbing thing to me is that we are this poor shooting the ball. Wow...we have been downright terrible all year. Fran needs to play Jok and Uhl and work through their issues on defense.

Could not agree more. I have long said that putting the ball in the basket will win you many, many, many more games than a defensive emphasis. That only works if you also have elite talent which we do not.

Shooting won that game last night and broke our team mentally. When the other team is raining in 10 straight shots which were not all poorly defended and we cannot make a lay up or a jump shot. Hello.

Shooting can also erase large deficits which ISU has done multiple times in the last couple of years to many teams. It breeds confidence.

Jok is the most pure shooter on this team and everyone wants him to spend his time being a lock down defender. Okay? Meanwhile we cannot make a bucket for 9 minutes.

Why? It doesn't really matter what KF does, his future depends on his ability to walk to the bank and cash checks .

We are not at a higher level than we were under Alford, if anything it's slightly worse.

I still support Fran. I can't believe how the nega-hawks come crawling out after every loss. Fran had Tyler Ullis coming to Iowa. Suddenly a kid leaves Kentucky, Caliapari makes a phone call, and we lose him. That really hurt this team.

isu is a final four team. Yes, they trucked us. They are gonna destroy a lot of teams this year. I still believe in Iowa and Fran. Go Hawks!

In footbal Iowa did develop a ton of talent a while back, we had the most talent in the conference for three years in a row and didn't win it once because KF is terrible at winning.

in bball Fran ends up getting 4th and 5th option guys because he can't land anyone else. He's not trying to get mid major talent.

Guys aren't developing fast enough. Gabe has gotten better but none of the other players have improved each season. They might play better for a period of time but then regress.

Marble 100% got better but I really can't think of another player under Fran who actually has gotten better since he arrived on campus each year.

That is the biggest thing that worries me. Player progression because it's pretty damn bad. Some of that is coaching but other reasons is probably just pure talent and Iowa doesn't have a lot.

White is a ton better than he was four years ago. Stronger, better rebounder, better understanding of the game. Gabe, much much much better. Woody, a ton better than as a freshman. Gesell, shooting woes included, is much better too. He has better handles, is stronger and plays great defense.
Epic fail here if you ask me.

None of those guys other than Gabe, have really developed outside of the average growth that comes with age and weight training.

Good lord... the same old negative Nancy boy crap from the football board has now cast its stench over here.

All you geniuses who are ******* and moaning about Fran's alleged poor recruiting would have called for his head if he had missed on Oglesby, Jok, Woodbury and Gesell. Y'all need to get a life. Clearly, the one you have is kinda pathetic and miserable most of the time.
