I've been meaning to ask re: The Goofers

Perhaps I've missed this before but just in the last couple of weeks, including during the Michigan State-Goofer game last weekend, I've heard people referring to The Goofers as "The U." I thought that moniker was the domain of the 'Canes, and one most schools would prefer to avoid because of the jusitifiably negative connotations earned by Miami during the time that name became prominent. However, I get the sense that this is something the Goofer admin is encouraging as some form of loose branding.

Spanky, can you verify or debunk this?

The implication of exclusivity, uniqueness, prestigiousness or whatever is over-the-top as it relates to the Goofers. It's bad enough that we have to listen to all that crap about "THE Ohio State University," but the last thing I want to have to put up with is some overblown misappropriated nickname for Gooferville.

In MN, its always been called The U, for as long as I can recall.

Interesting. While it seems innocuous enough, I choose instead to use it to further fuel my inherent dislike of all things Goofer.

In both cases, Miami and Minnesota, there is a pro football and basketball team by the same name. It helps with confusion when referring to a Timberwolves/Vikings/Gopher (Heat/Dolphins/Hurricanes) game. Other than that, you are right: it is a conspiracy.

Darn Minnesotans trying to be all exclusive, unique, and prestigious or whatever...we don't tolerate exclusive, unique, and prestigious or whatever down south in Iowa...
