It's Time, Unfortunately...

Kansas is a two seed bc they have the hardest schedule in the last 20 years of college basketball and are in first place in arguably the toughest conference in America.

Gooph is in as of now bc they are RPI 33 and SOS #4. That could change though as they have a brutal end of the season.

I know, dude. I know.

No offense, but I haven't looked at the RPI once this year and, assuming we don't tank our last 6 games, I won't. If we finish in the Top 3 of the B1G and get to the semis of the BTT, then regardless of what the RPI says, we'll be a 3 or 4 seed. The only time I look at the RPI is if there is a question of whether or not we make the NCAAs at all (i.e. last year). Let the Minnesota's of the world concern themselves with the RPI. I'm more locked into a regular season Big Ten title.

No offense taken, dude. RPI gazing is for nervous seed-obsessors like me. If you can live in the moment and enjoy the games, more power to you.

Yeah it's nice we get a break from the stupid RPI and talking about the bubble. We are in the tourney and playing for championships and high seeds now. And it's been a long time so enjoy.

Haha that's kind of his point...

RPI doesn’t take into account where games are played. The fact that its used by selection committee is a freaking joke.

2 years ago it was nice to be talking bubble again now its nice to have a break from it. I love you Fran.

This isn't correct. RPI is the worst rating system I have ever seen, but it does at least factor in where your own games are played.

Wundergrape, I said last year when we were worrying about our RPI and getting to the tourney, that I would still think it was unfair this year and I still do. Sure, we'll get to the tourney this year. But I'm not so sure about seeding because of this quacky RPI device that's just used to make it easier for small conference schools to get in. And every program has ups and downs. Although I think we're probably in for the next few years, at some point RPI will be an issue for us getting to the tourney again because, ironically, we're from the toughest conference nationally. See NE @MSU if that is doubted. I'd rather put RPI out of it's misery now.

You are correct, way too much stock put into RPI. What it can't account for is time of year, injuries, who is hot when, ect. Why we say somebody should or shouldn't be in a tournament based on a mathematical formula is one of the most absurd things in sports. There are several other formulas that make just as much sense, if not more than RPI. Why so much love for RPI?

Kansas Jayhawks: Have you taken the time to really evaluate the Kansas resume, if not I would. It is very, very impressive. I have no problem with them getting a 2 if selection was today.

Iowa State: If they seeded the NCAA Tourny today Iowa State would get a higher seed than Iowa. Not tough..

Minnesota: If tourny selected today they would be a LOCK. How they hell are they not?

RPI is a joke but IMO it wouldn't change the above.

I should say that I am a big, big proponent of using mathematical models as an input in determining relative rankings of NCAA teams. It's just that as mathematical models go, RPI is frajacking embarrassment. (I'm mean 75% of the prediction weight does not even depend on a team's performance.... are you fracking serious, errrmmmmmaggggrrrrddddd!!) As a guy who does statistical analysis for a living, I find its use by the NCAA to be offensive to all mathematical modelers out there.

Oh, and you could actually build a model that includes weightings for when a game is played and include factors for momentum and adjustments for individual injuries.

Espn's BPI does most of that. I actually prefer it to kenpom, because while kenpom measures performance it doesn't care if you win. And unless you're playing stratomatic you play to win the games.

Exactly. It's like the baseball writers who still look at batting average and win-loss record when evaluating MVP and Cy Young credentials. It's due to either A). lack of intelligence/ignorance or B). laziness in trying to understand far better tools for the job.

In either case (whether it's the baseball writers or the selection committee), they are not fulfilling their responsibilities by continuing to rely on incomplete analysis.

Man, my point in posting this thread is soaring far over people's heads.

I wasn't saying that I didn't know why the above scenarios are true...only that some people have been questioning them as if they are occuring in a vacuum. I wanted to provide information as to why they are true.

Likewise, (Unclehawk) I wasn't saying that the RPI is good - it's a tremendously flawed tool, I know that.

Just sayin' that it's the time of year when the RPI becomes the only real ranking that matters. Not sayin' it's good. Not sayin' it's bad. Just sayin' it's time.

I've always wondered how the top team in a conference always seems to have the toughest schedule. Kansas is by far the best team in the big 12 and every other team has to play them twice but obviously Kansas doesn't have to play themselves. That should be a huge factor in strength of schedule but it never seems to matter.

I know in this case Kansas played a very difficult non conference schedule but it seems to always work out that way for some reason.
