It's Time, Unfortunately...

No offense, but I haven't looked at the RPI once this year and, assuming we don't tank our last 6 games, I won't. If we finish in the Top 3 of the B1G and get to the semis of the BTT, then regardless of what the RPI says, we'll be a 3 or 4 seed. The only time I look at the RPI is if there is a question of whether or not we make the NCAAs at all (i.e. last year). Let the Minnesota's of the world concern themselves with the RPI. I'm more locked into a regular season Big Ten title.

I love this. Crappy teams like MN can do the worrying this time.

Man, my point in posting this thread is soaring far over people's heads.

I wasn't saying that I didn't know why the above scenarios are true...only that some people have been questioning them as if they are occuring in a vacuum. I wanted to provide information as to why they are true.

Likewise, (Unclehawk) I wasn't saying that the RPI is good - it's a tremendously flawed tool, I know that.

Just sayin' that it's the time of year when the RPI becomes the only real ranking that matters. Not sayin' it's good. Not sayin' it's bad. Just sayin' it's time.
Sorry Wunder,
I'm just so sick of RPI because it is such a tremendously flawed tool. With a better tool, then really deserving small conference schools might actually get better seeds.

Ha last year's bracket shot that logic all to heck. Mid majors bubble teams did NOTHING in last year's dance. What a bust. We all know Iowa belonged in the bracket last year, no use rehashing painful memories.

Thats my point. Theyre not deserving and most usually do nothing but it only takes one of them to pull an upset to create a story.

Last year highlighted how off the rpi really is with the mountain west beating the system.

You are correct, way too much stock put into RPI. What it can't account for is time of year, injuries, who is hot when, ect.

RPI blows but I don't really think any of those should be considered. They aren't considered in any other sport. It should be about who you beat and who you lose too.

Also, unless you are watching every single game then you are using something similar to a mathematical formula in your selections anyways.

It fits their agenda.

As an Iowa fan I hate it but I completely understand why they want the mm's in rather than midle of the road power conference teams.

It makes for much better tv when the little guys win the first week or two.

There's no way it makes for better tv. Look at the teams that got at-large bids into the First Four last year: Middle Tennessee played Saint Mary's, and Boise State played La Salle. You think those games got a huge TV audience? Mid majors upsetting major conference teams might get people fired up, but mid majors playing other mid majors just makes everyone tune out and go to sleep.

I agree, there is a reason why those first round games are not on the major networks like CBS.

Speaking of TV coverage...I cannot stand how the tourney has been covered the past 2 seasons. In the past I could always count on CBS picking up the local game (um, Hawks). Now they can get stuck on, like TruTV. I don't get that channel nor ever will. Plus Chuck Barkley....ugghh.

I actually really like the new setup. I can see WAY more games than I ever could when it was stuck on just one network. Now, pretty much all games are shown. Gotta get DirecTv!

True no one cares about two mms playing eachother but no one watches that play in round anyway. The fact that all four last ins were mm's insured the comity that they would get their two into the actual tourney.

The "Cinderella" is what helps draw in the casual fans.

I detest the RPI. However, the Selection Committee can use whatever system they want to use. They can seed us wherever they want to seed us. Put a team on the floor and we'll beat them. Give us another victim in the next round and we'll beat them as well. No one wants to play a team with as much front court depth and overall talent as Iowa. No one.

+100000. I get all of these networks through Verizon, so I can pick and choose which game I want to watch at any given time, which means I can watch whichever match up intrigues me most, or simply switch to another game that suddenly gets close. No more having to snooze through obligatory coverage of a 1 seed blowing out a 16.

This is especially nice now that I live in Florida - the Hawks would never have been the regional choice down here under the old setup. This year, I know that I will be able to see the Hawks play in the NCAA's no matter what. In 2006, I had to watch online with choppy streaming. Now I'll get the game in HD on my 50" plasma.
