We win the outback bowl and everyone is complaining about something.
Well congratulations coaches and players.
That D was legit!!
Enjoy the win, enjoy a little time off, then get back to setting the bar a little higher. That's what you did last year and look, you did it.
2019 presents a great opportunity!!!
 
Yep. I'm negative often enough too, but I can't do it after a bowl game win. Especially when the Hawks should be ranked in the final poll. 9 wins and a ranked finish.. That's not too bad?

I was (am still am) kind of disappointed in the missed opportunity that was the regular season, but beating a ranked team in a bowl game helps to salvage that somewhat. Sure, it could have been, and probably should have been, at least a 10-2 regular season..

Suppose the thing is, most programs not named Ohio State, Alabama, etc. would be pretty happy to be 9-4.

So I find it hard to be too critical this morning. I'll save that for next fall. :D

It is a message board, if we all had the same perspective/opinions then this place wouldn't exist.

I'm happy with the bowl win but I still can't shake the disappointment of what 2018 could have been. I'm sure I will at some point and I'm optimistic that 2019 could be better.

Problem is if Iowa had been 10-2/11-1/11-2, there would have been a decent chance the Hox could have wound up drawing Florida or LSU and gotten murdered. Not to sound like a homer, but Iowa was probably the second or maybe third best team in the conference this year and just inexplicably shit the bed, but on bowl day that works out better.
 
I don't worry very long about what could have been.
It was frustrating going through it though.
Living in the past causes depression. Living in the future causes anxiety.
So meh.

I get what you're saying, part of me has been thinking about that as well. But with that defense I think Iowa could have hung in there with the likes of Florida (Peach Bowl), Washington (Rose Bowl), or any of the other Big Ten bowl opponents. I'm not saying we would have won all those games but I think Iowa could have looked better against Florida than Michigan did. Iowa reaching the playoffs would have been scary, I don't see us competing very well with a Clemson or Alabama but who can?

So is it better to go 9-4, finish ranked, and winning the bowl game or is it better to win 10+ games and lose the bowl game? I think I would have preferred to at least have had the pleasure of saying Iowa won the West, even if that meant Iowa lost their last 2 games (BTC and Bowl).
 
If the CFB playoffs ever expand, I really think coaches like KF would flourish more. He'll likely never get a shot. It's unfortunate that they play a game that is more a of a beauty pageant than a football game when it comes to deciding who is the champ. Do you see teams in the NFL going undefeated along the way to their Super Bowl? No, not real often. It's hard to win football games. Otherwise, everyone would be doing it. The fact is, not every one is. Iowa wins more than they lose by a lot and I am always going to be thankful for that and not wish away a staff that now has as many bowl wins as EVERY other coach that coached at the school combined. That's a lot of winning. Of course it can be better, I am not satisfied either, but to be unhappy with a program that is this healthy seems disingenuous.

Glad I haven't seen that post... WTF. There's no reason to apologize for anything. We beat a ranked team that arguably has the best D in college football. We put 27 pts up on them. Most every talking head out there had them beating us 20-6 or something like that. (Herbstreit may be the only media guy I saw that picked us to win)

We didn't commit a single penalty. Not one. That's AMAZING in todays game and I'm surprised that hasn't been brought up more. It had a huge part in us winning that game. Hard to bash the coaches and kids over that.
 
I'm just as critical at times. It's not the kids, it's the coaching that drives me crazy. Yesterday was an epic showing of what teamwork can accomplish. Composure and mental toughness beat Mississippi State, along with with a shit ton of penalties on them, but we won, we hung in there and didn't beat ourselves . The seniors leave, and a new class comes in. It starts all over again. Winning a bowl gives momentum going into spring ball so we should cherish what we have and what we're used to, 7, 8, 9 wins, but more importantly, fine young men.

Iowa had the right draw for our defense. I wouldn't have liked our chances against a team with a formidable passing attack.

D was great. 7 points given up directly by Stanley. Yes we did get lucky on the pick in the end zone because Gervase was not there to break it up but thankfully WR made huge mistake. MS QB definitely got his yards at times though. That stop at the 1 yard line was glorious. 4 downs to get it in and held to a field goal.

The dual threat QB scared me. But at the end he had to almost single handedly win the game for them.

Which brings me to my main point, again. We were the more physical team. You could see it as the game wore on. Their skill position players started hearing footsteps. The only way Fitzgerald could complete a pass in the fourth quarter was to high point it. Otherwise his receivers were developing alligator arms and dropping TD passes.

Ironically, it was coach Moormann that was trumpeting to get ready for a physical game. Well, he got one. This reminded me of the bullies of the big ten days when we won several bowl games against SEC teams. That key goal line stand that held them to a FG, just before Gervase's interception in the end zone, was physicality personified.

More accurate to say we werent called on any penalties. MSU fans are sure talking about that.
