It's pretty bad when

Heard footsteps? Their receivers were wide open almost all day. Their Qb is even more inaccurate than ours, and when he did put one on the numbers they simply dropped it. They dropped 2 passes that would have been tds and we didn't have a db within yards of the receiver.
Wisconsin had 1977 yards passing.
Mississippi State had 2107.
So........
You fail??

Yes that looks like a decently clean block by Smith but Easley was also about 1-2 yards downfield while our receivers were blocking their Dbacks which could have also been called OFF PI. That was a very close play but otherwise the hawks did not have any obvious penalties.

And that Sweat guy could have got called for unneccesary roughness late in the 3rd qtr I believe after Stanley threw the ball away and Sweat just shoved him hard late into the Iowa bench.

It's not PI when ball is thrown behind the LOS...

Keep in mind that Iowa was the only unranked team playing on New year's day, so beating a #18 ranked SEC team is extra-sweet!
Even though in most areas of the game they had us beat, who cares?!
The ball just bounced our way on 3-4 critical plays and we got the W.
GO HAWKS!

Especially when you read someone on here saying they were embarrassed by the game yesterday. How anybody ever be embarrassed beating a ranked opponent?
Absolutely, a gutty comeback win against the best defence in the nation, nothing to be embarrassed for! Proud, yes!! Iowa was the dominate team for much of the game before shooting themselves in the foot, twice! Then had the stones to retake the lead. Great win, not soft in this game.

My biased eyes can't remember anything happening where I thought we should have been called for one. If anyone else can bring up of one I'd be curious to know
I thought the take down by our receiver on easlys second TD was close, Damm, it was worthy of a WWF smackdown!

...

So is it better to go 9-4, finish ranked, and winning the bowl game or is it better to win 10+ games and lose the bowl game? I think I would have preferred to at least have had the pleasure of saying Iowa won the West, even if that meant Iowa lost their last 2 games (BTC and Bowl).

How meaningful are the bowl games now? How significant will they be in a few years?

Once was a time when bowls were a chance for teams to get more practice and to put their best players on the field in front of a national TV audience one more time. The competition felt like it meant something.

With the growing number of NFL prospects sitting out bowl games, I’m not sure that’s the case any longer. It’s like top soccer squads playing “friendlies” without many of their marquee players. The play is a couple notches below World Clup levels and the scores are meaningless.

I’d rather take a better regular season record and not put much stock in the bowl outcome.

All of Miss. St. penalties were obvious easy calls. It wasn't like Miss. St. didn't commit those penalties. You could call holding on every play, but should really only call the ones that affect the play or are blatant. Off the top of my head I could count 5 other plays where I thought Miss. St. was holding, but it was never called, those don't upset me really. I think they only times they flagged Miss. St. for holding was when we would have sacked or maybe sacked the QB, but the hold saved the QB.

In the grand scheme of things, probably not much. But at the very least it's a quality non conference win. But for the players it might be more. For the seniors it is one more chance to put on the uniform. The players are treated like royalty for a week, showered with free gifts, and (in most cases) playing in a vacation destination.

For the younger players it's still extra practices, I think those are still beneficial. The players that are skipping the bowl games are not as many as the media makes it out to be. IIRC, ESPN showed a list of the players that skipped their bowl and I think it was 4 players and all of them had 1st round potential. If a player has an opportunity to make life changing money then the decision to play the game or not becomes personal and I have a hard time holding that against anybody. But I think most of the players feel like they are playing for something, it is another trophy that they can always say they won. In seeing how the team reacts to just being able to keep Floyd after beating Minnesota makes me think they still enjoy that part of it.

But from my perspective, as a fan, I agree with you. While winning that last game is fun and it's a good feeling to end the season with, once that "high" is over I think I would have preferred saying Iowa was the West division champs. When I look back at the recent seasons I talk more about the 2015 season where Iowa was within inches of winning the Big Ten and got slaughtered in the Rose Bowl more than I talk about the 2017 season where Iowa won the Pinstripe Bowl beating Boston College. I take more pride in a season where they lost their last 2 games than I do where they won the final game.

That's my 2 cents anyway, which is quite a bit considering it's not even 7 am yet. :)

We win the outback bowl and everyone is complaining about something.
Well congratulations coaches and players.
That D was legit!!
Enjoy the win, enjoy a little time off, then get back to setting the bar a little higher. That's what you did last year and look, you did it.
2019 presents a great opportunity!!!
Beating any SEC team is a GREAT win for Iowa and the Big Ten...Especially the way Mississippi State was acting, almost Cornhuskeresque.

That word "opportunity" for 2019 frightens me a bit, hope the coach and players don't read it.

Haha yeah he pancaked him. They'll have fun watching the film on that. Brandon Smith blocked his guy 3 yards into the endzone. He's turning into a mauler of a blocker too (and he should be as big as he is)

Problem is if Iowa had been 10-2/11-1/11-2, there would have been a decent chance the Hox could have wound up drawing Florida or LSU and gotten murdered. Not to sound like a homer, but Iowa was probably the second or maybe third best team in the conference this year and just inexplicably shit the bed, but on bowl day that works out better.

Yep, I've definitely thought about that. I suppose Iowa ended up about where it should have, and deserved to be.

I guess the real question is this: What do you enjoy more? A 2015 type season where the regular season is great, and the bowl game is a miserable experience? Or a season like this year?

Suppose I'd take 2015, even if the outcome of the last two games wasn't exactly ideal. It was a fun rid to 12-0, and basically a play or two away from the playoff. Even if it meant getting drilled by 'Bama.

2002 is another example. Loved it (minus the Orange Bowl).

FWIW, I find your takes more pragmatic than negative.

I try to be level-headed. I definitely consider myself a pessimist when it comes to Iowa sports these days.. Or at least figure that Iowa has really zero shot at winning a national title (unless MAYBE if the stars align one year). But maybe that makes me more realistic than pessimistic. I've come to terms with it all.

But I at least make the attempt to not let emotion dominate my posts.. Not too much, anyway. I still let myself enjoy the good moments, too.

Nick would have called off the dogs on Iowa. Gimme the great season and shart in January any day as long as it is a truly great season. I don't want a 10-2 season and then to get pasted by someone in a game like the Citrus Bowl or Peach Bowl when it ain't the playoff.

Correct but Easley was not behind the LOS I am almost sure.

His route on that play was an out route, not a down and out route. He went down the line and went behind the line to actually catch the pass. Watch him loop back during his route. The pass only went forward a yard or two and Nate started in the shotgun.
