It's officially official--Walk BMC is coming to Iowa

I agree.

Will be interesting to see who ends up where.

I'm old/young enough to remember the transition from Davis to Alfraud. Granted, there wasn't a portal then but I don't remember a lot of players grumbling or transferring

Remember when Alfraud 'borrowed' the riding lawnmower from the place there in IC then didn't return it or pay for it?

OK, ok, back to BM.........

Actions spoke louder than words back then…..the players sent Davis off with a sweet 16 trip! What was that….Settles 8th year or something like that??

I don't think any AD who wasn't a player/coach in a certain sport really knows what to look for at a deep level. Hell yes Barry Alvarez knows what to look for in a P4 football coach, but this isn't a thing where Goetz is out there looking for X's and O's. That's not a knock on BG, it's just what it is. BG is going after the hot hand with input from the donors who give the big money. To expect her to know what to look for would be like me going out and trying to hire the best potential astronaut for a space mission.

I'm not saying he's a bad hire, but he has the exact same chance at being a burnt turd a la Lick as he does at being the next Brad Stevens.

1 D-1 season, and far less resume than Lick.

IMO it's best to keep hope high and expectations low.

I agree.

The important point is that his style of play will only be as fast as can be allowed to 1. get his PG 40 minutes of play each game and 2. mitigate injury risk for that player. That is, if he's still planning on using that general framework here.

Hopefully he will have a solid bench to give the Lads a break to keep solid players on the court

For multiple reasons I have a difficult time being excited for the coaching change. I think the major issue is dealing with the competitive disadvantages the new coach has compared to his peers. As a fan I want the best, as a realist I know what an uphill battle he has ahead.

I knew that things couldn't continue as they were and the new direction college sports has taken required a different mind set than Fran's. I won't miss Fran's substitution blunders and his occasional wierd behavior. Nor will I miss the porous defense played by scrawny underclassmen.

I do hope Ben McCollom can bring the fan base back to the arena with a fundamentally strong team.

I was going to be a naysayer, a negative Nancy type, but if you do a little bit of homework, you can see how this could work. Can McCollum have a Fran or a Matt Painter like ability to spot underrated talent and be able to develop it? Yes. It looks like he can do that and also navigate through the 2025 world of college basketball. So yeah, you/we can get excited.

He certainly has the eye to recruit talent to play his system

It all remains to be seen

But this is a feel-good moment for certain

I only watched the two games Drake played in the tournament and I find his offense interesting. Someone said on another thread that he is the type of coach to walk the ball up the court. What game were they watching???. Yes, when the numbers weren’t there he wisely had his players use good ball security, however when there was just a crease of daylight going toward the basket they were on there horse.

It was refreshing to see the defense collapsing on the ball also.

One thing that was different was when he got a technical he immediately turned a walked away from the officials knowing he made his point and set an example to his players to not dwell on it and move on with the game. He just turned and immediately started to talk to his players.

Were the announcers high at the time of the contact that caused the technical? Knocking a player down is incidental contact??? I found it interesting that the officials called to quick fouls right after that against Drakes opponent. That’s one of the reason’s coaches deliberately get technical to put a little pressure on the refs to be more observant of the physical contact going on by the other team.

Iowa basketball fans haven't had anything to be happy about or excited about in a long while. Feel free to hope, dream and expect big things out of our basketball program. We just hired a guy who revamped an entire roster in a year and took them to the dance immediately. Take a look at the S16 today....what stands out? The B1G and the SEC is pretty well represented. Those 2 conferences are going to run the future of college sports. Rev sharing will even things out, Iowa's NIL will improve with the right AD and HC in place.

Could things get worse? Yes, but we've lived the last calendar year wallowing in our current situation, it's ok to be excited today and excited about the future of Iowa basketball. If not, what the heck are we even doing here?

Today's news is good news for Iowa hoops, period, enjoy it.

He definitely does a good ability to coach the players he has. Now we all hope he can recruit B1G level talent and find the same success in a power five conference.

Yeah, unfortunately, the officiating was god awful. That, coupled with the ball consistently bouncing Tech's way, and a bunch of in and out for the dogs, was the nail in the coffin.

The change was warranted as Fran just looked burned out.
