It is almost August - time for camp news

T.J./TD: It has become a daily occurrence to mention a good catch by rookie tight end T.J. Hockenson, and he made another one Sunday – and in front of an important fan. Hockenson made a sharp cut to Matthew Stafford’s pass in the right corner of the end zone. Positioned to view practice a few yards away was franchise owner Martha Firestone Ford. – Mike O’Hara

Although an excellent season by Kerryon Johnson on the ground will, in part, likely be due to the presence of T.J. Hockenson, fans will measure the rookie’s value by his contributions on the stat sheet. Hockenson reportedly had just two drops for his entire college career. If he can display that kind of efficiency with his targets from quarterback Matthew Stafford this season, hardened fans might actually start believing a tight end could be worth a first-round pick.

Just two drops! Sick!!

It's not that good. I didn't have any.

Iowa did not play Pitt in 2010. No wonder you don't consider it a classic.

Pitt did play at Iowa in 2011 in a game I consider memorable because it had such a bizarre comeback for a team like Iowa. Iowa did absolutely nothing for almost 3Q, down 24-3 late in the 3rd and down 27-10 in the 4th. Then JVB went to the no huddle and all the sudden they discoverd Pitt could not cover little known freshman WR KVM and Iowa roared backed to win 31-27.

The weird part was after the game I was not jumping for joy, I just felt confused. Did Iowa really just do that?

Then for a couple of weeks everybody was super excited about Iowa's new no-huddle offense. That is until Iowa played PSU and scored only 3 points, and Iowa never played the no-huddle ever again.
So did they show the 2011 game? Was at the game and have wanted to see it again, but am always disappointed (I'm probably in the minority) when they show the 2015 game instead.

YES. Felt the EXACT same way. With JVB calling shots and not our seemingly always pathetic play calling, I felt we had finally graduated to the 21st Century.
It’s like, after the game, the coaches closed the door, huddled, and said “that worked way too good. We can NEVER do that again”, which, of course, we never did, and by the time JVB was a senior, we had the slowest and worst offense in P5, and JVB literally never threw another pass past 4 yards. And he threw the ball so dam hard no one could catch. If ever a qb NEEDED to throw DOWNFIELD, it was him. But our coaches were too stupid to let that ever happen. Still pissed as hell about it

Yes, and it seemed like the coaches did not want him to run either as he would just dump off short passes. JVB was a very good athlete and late in that bad 2012 season he did run a few times very successfully.

When you lose your two starting tackles and your offense is suffering then that running QB can make a huge difference.

What Greg Davis did to James Vandenberg was a crime.

We are heading into the month of more heat and humidity, low winds and sticky nights, and of course Hawkeye football camp. This is when it gets fun for the hawk fans and college fb fans in general. I and others await a lot of news coming from camp about which players are on the upswing, how the position battles are going, and whether some younger players can or might make an impact. Before we know it the games will be here and by week 3 or 4 there will be a bit more crispness in the morning air and temperatures and there will be that feeling of dryness that accompanies Autumn returning. Just a great time of year in Iowa and along with it comes football.

I am looking forward to information about who will be the top two running backs, whether the Off Line seems to be run blocking better, and how Stanley and the WRs and new TEs are clicking. Also, what will be the news about Nixon and the D LIne backups.

What are your big items to look for in camp?

Nice pep talk but do we really expect to get that much news out of camp? I don't think so. Fort Kinnick, remember? If we're luck Captain Kirk will have a couple of press conferences and throw us some bones and give us some names of guys that are emerging, who has worked hard since January and are there any incoming frosh? The most important piece of info we get between now and the Miami game is the depth chart that comes out game week for the Miami game. That is the most important depth chart of the year.

I find this frustrating each year. I live in Madison and the Badger practices are open to the local reporters until actual game planning starts the week of the 1st game

It's not "Fort Kinnick" because they want to be secretive, it's because they don't want any distractions. Which I would definitely agree with.

Hey, Captain Kirk learned from the master, Hayden Fry, never ever give anything of any kind away to the opposition.

And, I might add although not really pertaining to this thread, never ever do anything that might antagonize or be bulletin board material to a future opponent.

NFL camps are going and Hockenson is getting rave reviews each day. Hasn’t dropped a pass, runs terrific routes and he and Stafford have been “unguardable” on the red zone deep corner route, that Hock always comes down with.

He is changing the attitude about his pick with Detroit fans already. They weren’t happy with him being the pick in round because Detroit tried that and failed a couple of times in the recent past.

I made the trip up to Lions camp on Sunday to watch practice and Hock looked awesome, made some big catches and blocks, even knocked Austin Bryant out of practice after throwing him to the ground hard on a run play, He was constantly talking to Stafford or Jesse James on the sidelines trying to learn from those guys, seems like hes fitting in really well.

I had my Hockenson Iowa jersey and had a lot of fans raving about him, seems like they are really excited about what he can bring to the Lions.

Iowa football media day is Aug. 9 and Kids Day at Kinnick is Aug. 10. We should pick up some information at those gatherings.

Unless the coach is talking about Northwestern. Hayden pretty much told NW that they sucked, at least until NW finally beat Iowa after 22 straight losses.
