It obviously speaks to what fans have been missing from the program in recent years. Suddenly a new coach comes in and reconnects to the past, interviewing and hiring former Hawkeye players. If there wasn't any speculation that the GA would be a former Hawkeye, then there would not be any interest.
But since we're Hawkeye fans, and we love to know what former Hawkeyes are doing, especially if it involves coaching, then of course we're going to be excited when it seems likely a former Hawkeye will be hired as GA.
And don't completely dismiss the role of GA. No, it makes no difference in wins and losses for this coming season. But I think good coaches, whether it's football or basketball, surround themselves with good people at all levels. If the Hawkeyes are successful in a couple years, it's likely one of the top assistants would get a head coaching shot somewhere. And Bowen moves into one of those positions. And the GA moves up. Stable programs with quality leadership are all about continuity and development - the development of both players and coaches.
