Is there going to be a Grad Assistant?

Now that Jeff Horner is the new Head boys coach at Valley, is Fran going to hire Jess Settles as the Grad assistant? Maybe there will not be a Grad assistant this year? If the staff is set for this year, it is in great shape and a grad assistant is not going to make a big difference....just curious though.

Please forgive me because I'm ignorant on the subject of grad assistants.

I thought they were generally given to people who had recently graduated and that they had to be continuing their education.

From what I thought it was a good situation for the person to continue his education and to start to learn the ropes of the coaching side and for the university to get a helper for cheap. Sort of a paid internship kind of deal.

I've been amazed at the talk about this position here in the last couple of months. Am I totally wrong about what I thought this position is?

In all of the years that I've followed Iowa basketball no one ever cared who the GA was. Why start now?

How about Adam Haluska? Great student, washed out in pro ball, I believe..and I think he might be going into coaching...plus his little brother is coming in the fall to play football.

Grad assistants are quite possibly the most insignificant piece to a basketball program. The speculation surrounding this position is just insane.

True, but the video coordinator isn't usually anything to get excited about either... and we got Ryan Bowen....

It obviously speaks to what fans have been missing from the program in recent years. Suddenly a new coach comes in and reconnects to the past, interviewing and hiring former Hawkeye players. If there wasn't any speculation that the GA would be a former Hawkeye, then there would not be any interest.

But since we're Hawkeye fans, and we love to know what former Hawkeyes are doing, especially if it involves coaching, then of course we're going to be excited when it seems likely a former Hawkeye will be hired as GA.

And don't completely dismiss the role of GA. No, it makes no difference in wins and losses for this coming season. But I think good coaches, whether it's football or basketball, surround themselves with good people at all levels. If the Hawkeyes are successful in a couple years, it's likely one of the top assistants would get a head coaching shot somewhere. And Bowen moves into one of those positions. And the GA moves up. Stable programs with quality leadership are all about continuity and development - the development of both players and coaches.

+1,And it could help with wins and losses for the reason that some of these GA's are sometimes closest to the players, and practice on the floor with them. Now we should have enough kids to have a practice squad for a change. But the interest is there because of the Iowa ties(shows what kind of fans we are!!)We wont forget about our former players anytime soon.

Exactly. I guess I don't understand why people are so excited about filling these rather insignificant positions.
But it's not insignificant. We got Ryan Bowen for the VIDEO COORDINATOR. That is awesome. If we can put someone like that at the vid coordinator position, then we can certainly get a powerhouse hire at GA.

Didn't Coach say something along the line of potentially going without a GA next year.

Maybe Cole said he would like to go into coaching when he is done and possibly be the GA after he graduates next year. I wouldn't object to seeing Cole maybe stay on as a GA especially after all the trials he went through as a player at Iowa. Maybe after Cole finishes his 2 years, Horner is brought in as the GA. he will have had 3 years HS coaching and with any luck he may have recreated interest in basketball at that school. Due to their size they should be better at Bball then they are, this may help give Iowa a little edge if there are any potential D1 soph., Jr, & senior players (assuming they liked Horner as a coach). He possibly may have had a glimps of the recruiting game from that side so he is better prepared for it if he decides to try his hand in college.

Washed out! LOL. Try taking care of his family. He has little or no interest in being a coach other than trying to be as helpful as he can to his brother.
He is busy as a Financial Advisor in the Principal network working to build his future. He is all over the state and he pops in to IC and works out with players etc. at times and as most alums is very interested in the success of Iowa's programs.

Big fan of Adam. Maybe ''washed out'' was too harsh of an assessment. Did he have pro ball opportunities that he turned down to start his career?
Last I heard he was in Israel,I believe.

Lots of Europe wanted him but with the birth of his daughter and the very negative feedback from Bru and Horner on getting paid made it a very easy decision.
The family is pretty close so having everyone together in Carroll with the granddaughter is pretty important to Grandma.
