Is Scott Frost the next PJ Fleck?

So when do we get the Being Scott Frost show on BTN. I'm sorry, but I just don't see PJ Fleck getting Minnesota better than 6-6. That would put him at 5-7 and 6-6 (maybe) in his first two seasons. Without a top tier QB in the B10, it's really hard to win. Teams line up to stop the run and you better have a QB to keep them honest. Minnesota doesn't. 6-6 may end up another 5-7 campaign.

The expectations of Frost are off the charts. I'm sorry, but in the B10 there is no way this is a two year project at Nebraska like UCF. I just don't think they will improve enough on defense to stop opposing offenses. The road schedule they face this year is unbelievably difficult...at Michigan, at Ohio State, at Wisconsin, at NW, and at Iowa. I seriously don't think they win any of those. NW or Iowa would be your best bets, but Iowa in Iowa City at the end of a long season on a short week, doesn't bode well for Nebraska.

The hype train on Frost is getting ridiculous and he, himself, is not slowing it down any. I'll be watching the Nebraska BTN preview on Monday. The clips of pre-released clips of Frost were somewhat astonishing. I think he's bought into his own hype. This conference has a way of humbling you pretty quickly.

Nebraska’s ship has sailed.

The only reason they were so successful was recruiting which, because of today’s scholarship rules and the fact that they’ve been a tire fire for most a decade, isn’t coming back. They can’t even hang onto their own in-state kids (Fant, Ott, Bazata, etc., and that’s just lowly Iowa), let alone get top talent elsewhere.

The single bad thing about Frost is that the fusker idiots will give him 5 plus years of mulligans and we’ll have to listen to the excuse bullshit until then.

That was on Pelini and softie Mike Smiley. Mike Smiley was very good for Iowa; he was basically a dopey version of Ferentz. Don't assume things will remain the same. Frost understands the importance of keeping the best guys in the state. There is also another former Hawk on staff who believes he can pull some guys from Iowa, which he has already done. They also recruit the best in the West division pretty much every year. Just need a coach who can put it together. No, Frost is not the next Fleck, but I don't think he's the next Saban, either.

He is the next PJ Fleck in terms of being a mid major coach who comes into the B1G West and is immediately recruiting better and selling the program better than some of his more experienced rival coaches.

Whether or not either can coach at the B1G level remains to be seen. KF was 4-19 through his first 2 years at Iowa. If Minnesota and Nebraska have patience like Iowa did then, they very well may be rewarded.

These are all good posts. ^ Translation: they could all come true and only time will tell.

My 2 cents is that a more competitive Nebraska will only help us, the West, and the conference in general.

For the most part we really only mine Iowa for the big uglies as Keith used to say. Yes there have been some LB's and TE's from the state that have done well but Frost isn't going to be stealing skill kids out of Iowa. If Frost puts a dent in say our OL recruiting then that could be a problem. But I like what our head recruiter is doing in Indy and other places outside Iowa. Plenty of big uglies out there. Ferentz likes to develop lineman but it would be nice to get more of those guys like Wirfs who you can almost plug and play. My point I guess is that our recruiting is improving and if we are forced to step it up even more then that is a plus IMO.

And let's keep that Iowa Western connection strong.

I think Frost is more likely the next Harbaugh. I think Harbaugh is a good coach faced with unrealistic expectations (inexplicably... they should be grateful for where he has them already). Fleck on the other hand is a used car salesman. F that guy.

I agree with this. I just don’t know how you really can compare Nebraska with Minnesota. Nebraska could be a sleeping giant while Minnesota is just sleeping. I guess if your pretty young you wouldn’t remember when Nebraska was considered a power house right of there with Oklahoma, Ohio State, Alabama, Miami, Notre Dame, Michigan, and USC. It’s interesting to see how some of those teams are just a little better than average now.

I expect Nebraska to take a B1G step forward. The only reason that might not happen is because of how Nebraska came out of a two school conference. In grew in strength some what when a Hayden disciple turned Kansas State around.

Yes, frost is a good coach, he’s an 8-4 coach, which is a very good coach. He isn’t the next Nick Saban.

Hope he's Frosty the Show man instead of being a seriously good coach. It's getting tougher for Kirk with Campbell at ISU and Frost at Nebby, it would seem.

That depends more on the risk appetite of Nebraksa's compliance department than Scott Frost. My understanding is that UCF would let basically anyone who was not currently incarcerated play there. And then when you get a guy like Snelson to decommit from The U to go play at UCF, most reasonable college football fans would see smoke and think "where there's smoke there's fire."

I'm not so much worried about Frost this year, it's year 3 or 4 that may be interesting and after that.

Nick Saban was quite Mediocre when coaching Mich St. in the BIG 10. Alabama still has a recruiting advantage as any SEC school in the south. Nebraska is tough. This is the difference between many coaches being successful or not. Frost had somewhat of an advantage in Florida, even though a lower conference team. It will be interesting if he is able to pull the 5* and high 4* recruits to Lincoln, and some from the south. If not, then Nebraska will be your typical NCAA program in the midwest going 8-4 with periodic years of brilliance.

I wouldn't include Campbell in this list. That is one non-conference game a year. I really put an emphasis on conference games. But, a loss to Iowa St can prove detrimental and really F up a good season, I guess!

Read some reactions from Nebraska fans responding to a BTN tweet about how many games they will win this year. Absolutely hilarious

If he gets 4 or 5 star guys out of the South, it will only be a matter of time before a show cause is issued. If you're a team in the B1G West, you have to land 100% of the guys who are in-state fans of your school and you have to selectively land the guys under the radar from the big population states like Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan and find guys like Stanley from neighboring states.

I'm not saying this to be mean or because I hate Nebraska, but Lincoln is a genuinely shitty college town and I simply do not believe that they can run a clean program and land top tier recruits from nicer parts of the country. If they start beating Michigan or OSU in head to head battles and get 4 star kids out of Georgia, you'll know something dirty is going down. I feel the same about Iowa, but IC is nicer than Lincoln and it is at least reasonably close to Chicago and a much easier drive for family members from Illinois, Ohio or Michigan. There's just very little reason to go to Nebraska unless you're from there, Kansas or the Dakotas.

Oh, I agree with everything you state. I didn't say he was going to be successful getting those players as this is not 1985 anymore. I was merely pointing out that he will have to get these kinds of recruits to have the success to meet the expectations of the admin and fans. This is what will allow him to be successful or bury him. I don't see it, as you point out, Lincoln is its own little island out in the middle of nowhere. Very difficult to recruit to, especially trying to get southern players up here.
