Is Iowa better off with Bullock over Coker?

Sorry, just calling it as I see it. Unless NIU was super fast on D, he wasn't that quick to the hole and I didn't see a lot of burst.

I agree he was quicker than Coker, but didn't think he was exactly lightning in a bottle.

With that said, Iowa's O seems to favor RBs who aren't necessarily super fast but have great vision.

I would not like to make a choice between the two, especially this early in B's career. However, the day of a single running back carrying the full load in BCS football is over, and has been for a while. Jon is right: Change up running backs, at least two, are the order of the day. And, Iowa really does need a running back who can go the distance, partly to score more points and partly to keep the defense thinking. I really like B's ability to catch the ball out of the backfield; I thought he played really well on Saturday...I was at the game and watched a replay later. He will take a beating, maybe more on pass blocking than running the ball. I, too, did not think he looked all that fast. I am ready to change my mind and certainly teh 23 yard run was a good example. Also, a couple of times I saw him wait, wait, wait and then burst with really good effect. We have GOT to run at least one other running back, maybe around 25% of the time. Can't wait for Saturday!

sorry if someone already posted... I was talking to friends about this. I don't know if Coker would have got home on that run to win the game. don't think he would have been fast enough.

I don't think anybody else talked to your friends except you. You are the first to post what they said. ;);)

Rewatch Coker's Insight Bowl performance (especially the dash at about the 1:00 mark) and tell me truthfully (a) Coker wouldn't have made it to the end zone against NIU, and (b) you would take Bullock over Coker.

Damon will be fine and has a bright future. But I would easily take Coker as the workhorse for this team any day of the week.

(a) Still don't feel Coker would have made it to the end zone think he would have got chopped down around the 5 yd line
(b) Not sold on Bullock yet, would take Coker for his blocking abilities at this point.

Coker is a far better run blocker. He has proven to be able to handle the workload for a full season. He was a tough load to take down, and caught the ball well.
Bullock showed flashes, quickness, good hands, terrific balance, and a lot of potential.
At this point, I'd take Coker... But hopefully Bullock proves over the season that he can be the dude.

As I said, I'd prefer both...a change of pace...wish Iowa had Coker this year as well. And McCall. And Hampton...etc

except this was your title:

Is Iowa better off with Bullock over Coker

you should call Ferentz this evening and ask him this question, just as you posed it on your website. If you don't, I'll go ahead and ask him on your behalf. Should be an interesting call.

Rewatch the entirety of the last season.

Didn't take anything the distance last year.

I am not crowning the kid...just think this offense has been in dire need of a home run hitter in the mix for a long time and I think Bullock 'may' have something like that in him. BTW, Ronnie Harmon was a WR first too..or in the slot.

You are absolutely right on this point. Iowa used to get 30 and 40 yard runs as well as 30 and 40 yard passes. It is the one missing crucial element!

You and I have agreed on this issue about the Hawks for awhile. When you need to put together 25-30 perfect plays on every scoring drive, you are not going to TD's very often.

bullock was quicker to the hole than we have had lately though he doesnt have elite quickness. he is quicker to the hole than coker and arob and at least equal to wegher (wegher had bad feet, he was fast but not overly quick).

as like most i like the combo of backs but if i have to choose i prefer power over speed as they usually block better for passes. bullock needs to learn to attck as a blocker because if he sets up he will get rolled (just too little).

coker isnt as quick as bullock but he played last yr hurt so i tend to think he is quicker than we saw. still too early to pick as bullock has only 1 game and we dont know if he can hold up.

+1

Way to early to determine who is better. Hopefully Bullock only averages around 15 carries per game otherwise there is a good chance he'll be physically beat up prior to the start of the Big schedule. Really hope Coach works in Garmon and Malloy during the non-conference schedule so that they can gain valuable experience and save wear/tear on Bullock.(Based on past experience I'm not counting on this)

Can't say yet. But I do like his black shoes, for that reason alone I'll go Bullock
