Who was the last player at Iowa to wear the #1 jersey? Was it Willie Guy?
I can't recall.

There has been some kickers wear it lately. IIRC Daniel Murray wore it.
The only duplicates that see the field are kickers. None of the duplicates on the Iowa roster are even on the two-deeps. Doesn't happen. And speaking of jersey numbers, I’m not a fan of 2 guys having the same number. I realize that you may to double up at points but not with two guys who often play
I’m guessing many players have inquired about wearing it since single digit numbers are popular and the equipment manager has been instructed by KF that it’s off limits to scholarship players unless they kick.

Out of curiosity, I looked at '14-present, and during those particular seasons, no two players with the same number both got playing time during the year. Unless you're talking confusion about when they're on the sidelines, you're seeing something that isn't there.
Why would he make single digit numbers off limits? That seems rather odd. And it makes the need to duplicate numbers even worse.
Matt Hankins is number 8I was speaking more of teams like USC and Ohio St. Probably could have been more specific on that
But to give you a couple Iowa examples:
Nate Stanley and Matt Hankins are both on the two deeps, both wear #4.
Trey Creamer is the other 2nd team CB. Tracy could easily break into the 2 deeps at some point because of the lack of talent Iowa has at the WR spot. Both players wear #3
Matt Hankins is number 8
Tyrone Tracy doesn't have a number assigned to him. Just because he's wearing it in practice doesn't mean it's his number. Most freshman don't even get their number until after camp.

Darboh would have gone to Iowa but the fact he would have been foreclosed from wearing #1 sealed his commitment to Michigan. Not single digits, just #1. I guessing its an ego thing, could be a team thing as well. Maybe its a tradition that scholarship players don't get it (my high school team decided that nobody got to wear #1 in both my JR & SR years). Plus Kirk is straight out of the 1970s and is an NFL minded coach where uniform numbers have strict rules.
It can't be just a coincidence that Iowa has gone 20 years since a position player wore a particular jersey number. There has to be some reason.
