Iowa's Depth is Wearing Teams Out

Iowa is a tough, unique match-up:

1. We go ten deep.
2. We run and press. Iowa is relentless.
3. Fran's system tires teams out.
4. That leads to foul trouble.
5. Foul trouble results in losses.

You saw it tonight. Xavier just ran out of gas and ran out of players.

Very important win against a very good team.

Had the same thought last night. Iowa ran up and down the court in OT like it was the first half, and Xavier, outside of one fast break, couldn't match it. The press was paramount down the stretch. Pressing and running on a tired team creates turnovers and fouls.

Very true. It would have been very difficult for Xavier to beat us in that OT period once both Stainbrook and Philmore were out and Farr was playing with 4. Christon's cramps made it even worse, and so they pretty much had Myles Davis or nobody on offense at the end. Hopefully it's more of the same tonight, as UTEP last night had only 8 guys play more than 6 minutes, even with a guy fouling out.

I thought the same thing, then I looked at the box score and for an OT game Iowa only had 2 guys play over 30 minutes, but I was shocked to see Xavier only 2 guys play over 30 minutes as well.

The difference was Iowa has more experience and better players 7 through 10. That experience is what will win future games. Other teams can and will match Iowa in players 1 through 6 but the experience factor of the guys 7 through 10 coming off the bench and making less mistakes by having played a lot more then other teams guys 7 through 10 will be the difference.
