IowaLaw's Objective Post Game Report: Northwestern

What an infuriating season! We were gifted one of the 2 easiest schedules in the Ferentz era. We had the talent, bringing back our top QB, OL, WRs, DL. We led every game in the 4th quarter. Still, we manage to piss the season down our leg. In spite of 3 losses to mediocre teams and zero notable wins, the Hawks entered today's game ranked and with an outside chance to win the West. Out coached, out worked, out performed in the 4th. The story of the Ferentz tenure as we move to the bottom of the Big 10 west. The sad thing is, we are trending in the opposite direction as Nebraska and Minnesota.

1. Stanley Needs to Sit and Watch - ENOUGH playing a guy every down who lacks the grit as a wet towel. If he's hurt, bench him! If he's not, bench him for playing like he's hurt. I don't care what his measurables are. How many times have we put the ball in Nate's hands in a 1 possession game only for him to fail? His stat line looks far better than he played, 27/41 for 269. 23 of this "pro prospect's" completions were 3 yards or less from the line of scrimmage. The guy is not a gamer, and plays scared in every game that we aren't leading by 20 points. Even though Northwestern's top 3 DBs were injured, "check-down Stanley" never once had the sense to attack their backups. He plays like a 12 year old trapped in a 6'4, 245 lb body. Needless to say, we are in 4th place in the worst division in the Power 5, and it's time to see what our highly touted backups can do. Iowa State's 3rd string true freshmen got an opportunity and never let go. Clemson's QB is a freshmen. If Stanley continues to play every down in the remaining 2 games, I guarantee 1 backup QB transfers before the start of the 2019 season.

2. Sub-Par Play Calling - We have all heard ad nauseum that Brian "learned under Belechik." Did Belechik teach him that when the Hawks are in 3rd and 10 or longer to tuck your tail and call a run up the middle or screen pass behind the line of scrimmage? We did that FOUR different times today, with none gaining more than 5 yards. All resulted in a punt by the Big 10's worst punter. Dad and lad are showing Stanley how to play scared. I'm sorry Kirk, but when you're 1-8 in close games over the past 2 years, your formula is not working. No imagination, no misdirection. Pure vanilla amateur hour from the highest paid coaches son in the land.

3. Smith Marsette Showing Glimpses - We all know Marsette has that "it" factor as a kick returner. He's one of the top 5 in the nation. But as a WR, he has largely fallen short. Today, however, the guy stepped up and made big plays. 4 catches for 90 yards, and 3 returns for 100 yards. Let's hope he can build off this game and give Iowa a legit WR threat next year.

3. Fant's Brother (and IowaLaw) Were Right: Ferentz Plays Favorites - Where there's smoke, there's usually fire. Everyone, except the cupcake Iowa media, has noticed our pre-season All American's conspicuous absence on the field. If he's in Ferentz's doghouse, suspend the guy, but don't have him play a hand full of plays and ride the bench the rest of the game. Is Kirk letting pride or favoritism get in the way of this team's wins and losses? Fant had zero yards receiving today, and when push came to shove, dad and lad decided to replace Fant with super star Max Cooper to win the game. Seriously?! We have seen this story before, with Sims, Wadley, Beathard, Mitchell, Bernstein riding the pine while Bower, Raestatter, Grigsby, & Rudock played every down.

4. Goodbye LeVar Woods - It's been well documented that Woods has been Iowa's weakest recruiter for years. But it continues to be apparent that Woods randys the Xs and Os aspects of coaching as well. Our PR continues to fair catch line drive punts at our own 6 yard line instead of let it land in the end zone. We continue to have half the team dangerously close to rolling punts despite losing the Wisconsin game that way. Perhaps the most frustrating of all, Woods continues to trot out last year's 117th ranked punter to watch him drill 20 yard line drive punts right into the punt returner's hands or boom them into the end zone from Iowa's 38 yard line. We knew punter was a problem last year and did nothing to solve it. Woods' pathetic special teams coaching has been a contributing factor in 3 losses this year. I'm sure he is a nice guy, but it's time to give someone else a look. There are literally hundreds of former Hawks out there that would kill for a chance. Angerer? Sanders? McNutt? Who wouldn't take a $200,000 salary to have a shot at coaching the Hawks?

5. Do We Have LBs? - I'm not sure I ever heard a LB's name called today unless the announcers were noting the huge hole up the middle and the lack of LB presence. It looked like Colbert and Hockaday were out there the most, looking mostly lost. Welch and Niemann (who are healthy but no longer starting), played a lot, but didn't make any plays. Are we going to rely on converting Hooker to LB (6 tackles and a sack) and hoping that we can surround him with improved 2 star talent thrust out there due to poor recruiting.

6. Stone and Golston Shine - With all the stars we have on defense, the unheralded Stone and Golston probably played the best. Stone had 6 tackles and an INT, while delivering some big hits, and Golston played his best game of the year, with 5 tackles and a sack. He seems to have got bigger as the season progressed, and should be a beast next year playing along side Epenesa and that stud JUCO.

The inability of exploit the other team's weaknesses seems to define this team. ISM was having an amazing day, and after his big catch, and the injury to their CB on the play, we throw to...Max Cooper in the end zone, who badly mis-times his jump and it's incomplete. Why not stay with ISM? They went back to him a little later and he continued to make great catches. Purdue sure knew how to exploit Iowa's defensive weaknesses. NW was strong up front and in the LB core. We needed to throw downfield, a lot.

The many checkdowns Nate threw probably indicated that: NW has a good defense, and that maybe Nate is turtling in. With Fant, Hockensen, ISM, et al, I really don't think the issue is with the receivers and TEs.

Iowa almost always loses close games now. It's like clockwork.

This is now a "wait til next year" season...again. They actually should be pretty good next year. If they aren't, is it getting to be about time?

#7. Ferentzian Clock Management Strikes Again - Once again, we have the ball right before halftime and with the game on the line at the end of the game. Once again, Stanley runs the clock all the way down, as if he's on a Sunday stroll with no recognition of the clock or the situation, and once again the Hawks call run plays rather than push the ball down the field as if the game is on the line. This time, the bone headed run up the middle led to a fumble that cost us the game. My gut tells me it was a called pass, but Stanley was so petrified that he audibled out of it to avoid having to make a play.

x100 on your analysis today, I usually agree with most things you say, but this was especially good tonight.

Agree totally with OP. Iowa has the poorest coaching staff in the Big. How could a potential first round draft pick not have any receiving yards? Did Fant hurt kirk's feelings? I'm done with Iowa Football

If your #1 reason is Stanley it shows how clueless you are. “His stat line looks far better than he played, 27/41 for 269.“ Wrong, his stat line is how he played. If the coaches weren’t in a spat with Fant, apparently, his stat line would have been much better. Opposing teams laugh when we march ISM, Groeneweg, Easley and Max Cooper out there.

Spot on! And KF is to stubborn to exploit the competitors weakness and that is why i firmly believe that he doesn't game plan. He's going to to do his thing and it's up to the competition to adjust not him! Problem is the competition has adjusted for twenty years and we haven't.

Stanley sucks, period. Take out his bullshit check downs and 2 yard passes and he would have 1/4 the completions.

There’s a lot that sucks on this team but Stanley is way down on the list. Coaches hardly played Fant, the best target. Our WRs suck. Thoreson had like 4 ypa. Now that sucks. Novice fans like yourself always go after the QB. He lost the PSU game but every other game was on something else.

I would flip #1 and #2 but pretty spot on. Brian is a joke. He calls the same plays over and over like I have never seen before. Takes deep shots on 3rd and short and runs on 3rd and long. If he ever gets the head coaching gig at Iowa he won’t last.

Uhh, did you watch the game? There are very few high school quarterbacks playing in Iowa's class 4A playoffs who couldn't complete 23 of the throws Stanley completed today. He simply hiked the ball and threw the safest possible horizontal pass behind the line of scrimmage possible. Stanley's performance makes a mockery of what it means to be a "game manager," as he was more of a "game intern."

Way down on the list? Are you a family member? Novice fans, hey moron I've had season tickets for 25 years. You don't have a clue what you're talking about. Every single game outside of Indiana, and Minnesota he has been bad. Inaccurate, doesn't see the field at all, happy feet, folds under pressure, cannot audible worth a shit, checks down, not a leader at all. He is bad, and is one of the main reasons our offense sucks. He has been a major contributor to every loss this season, go rewatch the games. Yeah, our receivers suck, running backs suck, coaches suck, but Stanley is at the top of the list.

You’ve been going to games for 25 years, I doubt, but regardless you still don’t have a clue what you’re talking about. Calling out college kids in such a deragatory fashion is the lowest form of douchebaggery. And you’re flat out wrong.

Yeah I have, longer than that actually. Season tickets for 25 years. You don't have a clue what you're talking about. Calling out college kids? Not one thing I said was inaccurate. If you'd pay attention in the games you would hear the comments the announcers make about his happy feet, not seeing the field, checking down, bad throws, etc. If you attend the games you can see the open receivers he misses. Yes our receivers do suck, but there are times that they actually do get open, but Nate has given up and checked down too early. Not a 100 yard rusher yet this season, so I would say the line and backs suck as well. Coaches? Laughing stock of the conference. How sought after are any of our assistants? Nobody wants any of these retreads. Get a clue

Where did you get that 23 out of 26 completions were within 3 yards of the line of scrimmage in your OP? That sounds like BS. He averaged 10 yards per completion and over 6 ypa, way more than Thoreson at 4 ypa. It isn’t that often an Iowa QB goes for more than 269 yards. CJ probably did only a handful of times.

It's getting harder and harder to get excited about next year given the historical pattern of quarterbacks regressing. With little exception, any soph or jr QB at Iowa has become more and more conservative and gun shy under Ferentz as he's "developed.? Hell, even NFL starter CJ Beathard was a shell of himself by the time he got to his senior year, throwing for just 115 yards per game, primarily to check down routes.

There's no doubt that "projected 1st round pick" Stanley has taken a step back this year, and all signs show that next year will be even worse. It's all mental. A culture of fear of mistakes.

Nate's backup, Mansell, who didn't even get to play late in the Indiana game when we were up 25, sees the writing on the wall, and knows that he is going to have to wait a year and a half before Kirk even opens a QB competition, at which time Mansell will have to compete with 2 others. I say, he gone before he had a chance to take a meaningful snap.

Next year will be worse. Can't wait for Epenasa to sit out the majority of snaps because he knows he'll be one of the most talented players on the team and coach has to keep his ego in check.
