Iowa withheld some athletes from competition

It had to be round about '97 or so, I was on my way home from visiting an aunt and uncle in Marshall, MN.

Got pulled over by a loser of a state trooper for one of those tree air fresheners hanging from my mirror. Gave me a ticket for an obstructed windshield which was a moving violation and went against my folks' insurance for a 17 year-old. Only reason I remember it was when he came up to the car he was giving me and my car the, "I want to bust you for something really bad" once over, then reaches into my car and swipes his finger on my dash board, and smells it. It was an old POS car that I took on gravel every day and he must have thought I had summa that Colombian yayo just randomly powdering my dash board. I hope that cop had 10 years of ass cancer before he bit the big one. Total asshole.
Reminds me of when I would regularly get pulled over in Mississippi because of the bumper sticker on my car. Even tho they'd always pull up behind me with lights and siren going, the first thing I'd do when they'd walk up to my window is ask for an I.D. Their reactions were usually a mix of incredulousness, then anger. One guy was shocked speechless for awhile, until he finally pointed to his uniform and said "What do ya think THIS is, a Santa suit??"

I’ve got a BIG ass problem coming up. My catcher is a hell of a ball player and he graduates this year. Dude is built like a tank, smashes the ball, and he’s an old school hard nosed ball player. He plays like Pete Rose without the temper.

The kid I had in my son’s sophomore class who caught was pretty decent but decided last year he didn’t want to play ball anymore. The current freshman and middle schoolers have no one who can play the spot competently. I need to book a trip to the Dominican and see if there’s a 6’4” 225lb 15 year old who can throw lasers and hit bombs and wants to come live in Podunk, IA.

Probably the most important position in baseball. Pitchers come and go in games an rarely go a full game. The catcher is involved on most every pitch/play. In addition, most importantly, has to keep the balls in front of him which can help not make a pitcher look as bad as they could. They also have to control the bases and keep the runners in check and make good throws when throw. Add into that calling a game. Good or bad catcher play can really make or break a young team.

We had a scrimmage a couple weeks back and the catcher was so bad (about 4-5 balls an inning) would go to the stop that what should have been a 4-2 game turned into a double-digit scoring win for our team. It was bad, even for early in the season. This was Fresh/Soph age. Shouldn't be that bad but the pitchers were trying to throw some junk and that catcher struggled tracking. There was never consistency.

It's the offseason, whaddya do?

Speaking of meandering threads, I need some help and OT won't get enough views...

I have a full (not cut in half), skin-on pork belly that I need to do something with asap because it's taking up the entire top portion of my freezer. A family member asked if I wanted a free pork belly and I, assuming it was skinless and cut in half like most grocery store bellies, said sure. It's freakin huge.

Someone give me a good smoker or grill recipe for this thing. I do not want to do a bunch of work skinning it or trimming it, I just want to cut it into a size that will fit on my Pit Barrel and Weber Kettle at the same time and cook this thing off and get it out of my freezer.

Go.
Make bacon.

I think the statute of limitations against tasteless jokes about Super Man has run. No pun intended.

I still remember the South Park episode where they showed Steve Irwin with a stingray sticking out of his stomach like a couple weeks after he died. Too soon?

It's never too soon.

I was in a fantasy football league with a bunch of coworkers back in the late 2000s and one guy who I'm sad to say I never got to know named his team the Irwin City Sting Rays.

I haven't played Fairy Tale Football in years, but my team was always named Str8Cash, in honor of Sir Randall Moss in the greatest parking lot interview of all time.

Question - if Iowa had a gentleman the caliber of Sir Randall Moss on the roster, would we win 7 games or 8 games?

I don't understand gambling in general. Honestly.

If I put down $100 on a team I'd be so scared shitless of losing my hard-earned money that it wouldn't be enjoyable to me. When it first got legalized in Iowa I put $50 in a DK account and it lasted me like 3 months. Placed some small bets of like $20 and some obvious parlays because I was too scared to make anything bigger. I have friends in my same age group who have a few grand in their accounts and they are constantly up or down throughout the year. I don't know how they do it...I'd be petrified.

My gambling history consists of $60 at a Meskwaki blackjack table in probably 2002 or 2003, $20 in a slot machine at Wild Rose during Ragbrai in 2012 ish, and the Draft Kings stuff a couple years ago that I mentioned earlier.

I 100% understand that people do it for the adrenaline rush, but my brain doesn't work that way. I don't get a rush, I get a feeling of remorse and stupidity and that's just with placing a total of $130 in my entire life.
Which is why places like Vegas are some dystopian hell-hole to me. Casinos are mind-numbing with the samness of it all, no matter how much you dress up the building. The incessant din of the slots and the faceless crowds all hoping to strike it big with one play. It might be adrenaline to some but it's nothing more than hopelessness to me.

Been to the city twice, got sick both times. Plus the airport completely sucks for an international city. For anyone making this a destination in their travels, don't trust the cabbies. At all. Ever.

I went once. The highlight was our trip to Hoover Dam and the return flight.

My first wife and I planned a trip to the Grand Canyon. I ended up being sicker than a dog and missed seeing the GC. Got myself together enough to make the return flight to MSP but had to be hospitalized when we got back to Mason City.

I went to Vegas once which is enough. It was a work conference for a week. Got hit on by a crossdresser for a trick and a car full of crossdressers asking if I wanted to party. At least they found me attractive.

Agree Casinos can be very depressing once the rush is gone from the occasional win and realization sets in that the casino is the only winner in the long run. Especially the slots, which are just expensive video games. You look around the place and instead of seeing shiny lights and hope, its just a bunch of depressed or lonely or adicted people throwing their money away. But maybe that's just me and I have grown too old and cynical in life.
